I've been getting ecto now since #201, and I think I'm beginning to get to know everyone... Martin and I got together in Saturday (23rd) and had a listen to some of his new tapes and a look at some photos.. Looking at the euro-ecto-party photos gives a whole new (perhaps more correct, but it's hard to say) image of those people.. We'll need to get hold of the ecto-mobile photos as well to get the "complete picture" here !! As Martin already mentioned, after enjoying "Warpaint", I downloaded the lyric sheets from the ecto server and had a bit of a read.. From reading these, I decided that I woudn't like the 1st two volumes as much as I'd like "Ecto" & "Rearmament" All this has changed since stealing the tapes from Martin. I have almost got to the stage where I'd say I enjoy some tracks on the 1st4 more than those on "Warpaint" (I've always been someone who enjoys "electronic" music (that seems like a really bad description of "Warpaint")). So... Am I going to place an order for all 5 CDs ?? Who knows. At the current rate of spending money on my cars I doubt it !!! :( So, about me... I'm 23, heavy build (polite way of saying overweight !), dark brown hair. I have been married for two and a half years to Sue. I waste inordinate amounts of money on cars and computer equipment (I own a Mazda Rx5 and two 1962 Ford Anglias (neither of which are running at present !), a 386/40 Unix box on which I run a BBS and a Macintosh PowerBook 100 (anyone want to buy a Mac 512Ke)). I also seem to have a minor obsession with parentheses... I first heard of Happy from Martin when he ordered a copy of the "Warpaint" CD a while back, and after scrounging a copy of it, wore the tape out completely in my car stereo... After listening to the "World Cafe" tape, I must agree with Martin on the inclusion of Bass into the songs played. It gives them a whole new feel which I really enjoyed.. But, boy have all you people got silly accents... The only person speaking English on the HGP tape was Martin (not true, there was at least one British person on there also) :) Ken -- Ken Taylor | ken@cujo.curtin.edu.au |"Who is king over my domain? I've been an ecto-lurker for several months and have decided it's about time I introduced myself. I discovered Happy's music by reading rec.arts.gaffa, and found a copy of _Warpaint_ at the local Tower here in Seattle. I mentioned on the University bb how great I thought it is and Michael Peskura sent me an email message suggesting I subscribe--and so here I've been quietly reading and telling all my friends to buy _Warpaint_. I listen to a lot of music, particularly female singers--thanks to you all for introducing me to so many more! I'm a Canadian even though I'm living in the U.S. and so knew a lot of the Canadian people you listen to (Sarah, Jane, etc.). Anyone else here a fan of Dalbello?? There's been some talk about writers in this group so I may as well come all the way out of this closet: I write poetry and have published quite a bit in various American and Canadian literary magazines. A book (_Seven Robins_) was published in 1983 in Canada and I have a new manuscript of poetry doing the rounds looking for a publisher. I also have a fantasy novel looking for a home. Current projects are a collection of poems about women in history and a prequel to the fantasy novel. (Hope I have some time to spend writing soon!) I love poetry and music and beaches and things Celtic. I love to travel and am finally having a chance to do some. I spent a month in Scotland (10 days in the Orkneys) last summer and just got back from two weeks in the Queen Charlotte Islands (off the coast of B.C. just south of Alaska). I have a great collection of shells and stones. BTW, for those confused by my name, it's pronounced "Neal" just like all the boys even though I'm not one. Thanks to all of you for your fuzzy blue welcome. Hello and greetings to all of you! I'd also like to encourage others lurkers to pop up and at least say hi. Hawkins. They showed the "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" video, which I thought was pretty good. Saturday night, having not managed to stay awake for any of the rerun of _Saturday Night Live_ guest hosted by Michael Jordan, I did manage to wake up in time to watch Casey Kasem's program. This week's episode reported that "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" is about 8 or 9 on the _Radio and Records_ charts (as opposed to 14 or so on the _Billboard_ charts reported in Friday's _Chicago Tribune_), and that Sophie B. is a drummer (which I should have picked up from the liner notes on the album, but didn't); and then I saw something interesting. It seems there are two versions of the video. The one on _FNV_ showed Sophie slithering across the floor in jeans and a low-end sleeveless plaid blouse. The other one, which the Kasem show carried only fragments of, has her slithering in what looks like ruffled bikini lingerie. Which of these has anyone else seen in full, and which is the one that everyone says isn't as good as the song? If you can get your hands on Sunday's _Chicago Sun-Times_, look up the arts section. It has a provocative article on how CD's aren't all they're cracked up to be. Martin, I think Jung's name is probably pronounced the way you think it is, but there's always the possiblility it isn't. Consider the case of Erica Jong, the author of _Fear of Flying_, whose name is pronpounced with a hard J as oppo sed to the way it would be in idiomatic Dutch. Glad Meredith and Valerie's party went so well. Reassuring to hear that the weather isn't only cold and overcast in Chicago (where it's supposed to get into the 30's overnight, breaking the record low for the severalth day in a row). Also reassuring, in a perverse sort of way, to hear that the NYT can indeed be bested. (Were it not for my leading this off with the Hawkins video item, I'd have been tempted to call it "All the news that's unfit to burn? and other stories.") Reassuring still further that the weather where Claudia is warmed up, after being like this. Maybe it _can_ happen here :-). Mitch ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 26 May 92 15:56:25 PDT From: barry@gnu.ai.mit.edu Hiya everybody, sorry I missed the ecto gathering at valerie's. I was really looking forward to seeing some of you again or seeing some of you for the first time! Anyhow, I don't know if meredith told anyone, but my truck is currently disabled. Here's the story if any of you want to know: Let's see, first started a few weeks ago, my truck started making these knocking noises. Hmmmm, now what could it be, aside from the noise everything seems to be running perfectly, no loss of power, no decrease in fuel economy, etc. Could be the oil, noise seems to happen at high oil pressure, so changed the oil a few times, still there. Attempt to identify source of noise, sounds like the valve lifters, so get one of those additives which are suppose to quiet the valve lifters, hmmm, the noise goes almost completely away, guess I'll have to change the valve lifters. Wait for the weekend, I figure I can change the lifters over the weekend. My truck goes into the garage, and I start my repair work. Nothing goes as planned, the manual I was following was pretty good, but it didn't cover everything, but I would still reccommend tehm for you home mechanics(Haynes manuals) Figure would be easy to remove to remove valve covers, but no, first I have to remove distributor, next thing you know, I've removed Fuel infection, vavle covers, intake manifold, rocker arms, push pins, exhaust manifolds, etc. Still haven't reached valve lifters. Gotta remove cylinder heads too??? Okay remove the cylinder heads, and of course I don't have the right bit to remove the bolts, get the right bit, and now I have to be extra carful so as not to slip and wear away the bolt head, or I'll have to drill the damen thing. Of course you have to be Arnold Scharzenager to be able to losen the dam things. Oh, did I mention, I passed the weekend estimate already and I'm one week into the job already. Parts of my engine are scattered all over the garage, my mother and father can't help but be curious at the various collection of vavles, hoses, connectors and other parts that I've pulled out of the engine, and I quickly yeall at them, "DON'T TOUCH A THING, OTHERWISE I"LL NEVER GET THE ENGINE PUT BACK TOGETHER!" It' may look like a mess, may even be a mess, but I'll manage to put it all back. Okay, finally get the cylinder heads off, and get to the valve lifters, hmmm one of the pistons look alittle worse off than the rest, so I'm confident I've found the problem. Unfortunately I don't have the equpiment to check and see if the replaced lifters were ever really broken, but I've changed them all so it should be okay. Oh, did I also forget to mention, that I've left the manual days ago and have just been making things up as I go? :) Like, Hmm, if I remove the a/C compressor, that'll give me alot more room to r work, so let's see, if I remove all these bolts, it should come out. :) I'm hoping to get all this done so I can go to the Katemas at Valeries and finally get to meet her and others. Okay, finally putting the engine back together now, this goes alot faster then taking the dam thing apart. Occasionally I get to a part or a connector that I have no idea went where, but when I finally finished putting the engine back together, I had no partts left over. Moment of truth, time to start the engine, reflect on what I've done. The experience was kinda fun, always wanted to open or take a complete engine apart and see what make s it tick, like haven't any of you wanted to just take your car completely apart or maybe your tv or stereo, etc? Okay, putting this off long enough, gotta see if it will start. Start it up, a fewrough sounds then it starts running, unfortunately the dam noise is still therer!!! Okay, crawl underneather car, try to pinpoint sound, think I've located it now, so execute repair procedure number 1, I hit it, a few seconds later the sound goes away and the engineis running quietly. Figure, okay I'll make the party! HURRAH! Better go for a test drive to make sure nothing is lose, back out of driveways and into street. Strap on seatbelts for test drive, prepare for the jump to warp speed, all indicators read normal, oil pressure and tempaerature are normal, maximum speed is available at command, everything is go, hit the gass and VVRRROOOOOOMMMMM Accelerating down the street, about to enter light speed, and oh oh. Something is wrong, losing all drive power, engine still operating at 100 percent, 30 seconds later start hearing these terrible noises and engine goes dead, try to restart, the car is trying to start, but not seem to be catching. End up pushing car down the street back home. :( Try cranking engine, something seems to be holding it back, start wondering, did I damge engine? so, I turn the engine manually, it's turning, so it's not the engine. I hope I can locate problem. I think it's the torque convertor, geez, mayjor transmissions problems, just what I need, don't know if equiped to do major transmissions work. Better call meredith and tell her not coming :( So, I go to shore with my brother and take along engine and transmission manuals to try to diagnose problem this way. Have a pretty good time at shore, wish I were at party though, end up alittle sunburnt on back, ouch! Get home, take out starter moter and crank engine manually, wholly g jeesus this is it! My god, the fly wheel has fractured, noise must've been it rubbing against casing. OUCH, don't reccommend carawling on back when your sunburnt there. Okay, the truck's gotta go back into grage. After a few tries I managed to push truck into garage on a inclind driveway about 20 degrees I think. Confirm it's the fly wheel once in garage, yup it's it. I'm told that I'm lucky it didn't explode on me, now I think if I had been really lucky I would've been able to go to party. Hmmm, I hope the fly wheel hasn't damaged the torque convertor or the transmission spleen. This brings me up to date I think, except this morning I removed most of exhaust system, and drive shafts, and working on getting transfer case out. Hey anybody wouldn't happen to have a book on how to remove a transmission in 5 easy steps do they? :) Keep in mind I've never done any of this work before, and I justed winged my way thoug err through most of this. Hmmm, hope I can put transmission back together. :) Barry ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 26 May 1992 16:18:45 -0500 From: kennel@herky.cs.uiowa.edu (Chris Kennel) Subject: re: Sophie B. I first saw bits of what appears is the second video (the 'bikini' one) which I would bet anything has at least some parts shot in colour (right Mitch?) on VH1. My reaction was *WOW* good stuff, gotta check this out. I buy the CD, fall in love with it, make a tape with 'DIVA' on the other side which hasn't left my walkman for the last 10 days or so. (OK, I listen to other tapes too, but this is the main attraction). Then one night I turn to MTV and I see a *different* video, which wasn't that spectacular (basically Sophie and band doing their thing). At first I thought that I was *really* confused about what I had seen on VH1, but now I feel reassured that I am not imagining things unintentionally... And as I write these lines, Chris reports having had the exact same experience. :) Ecto-synchronicity is the wildest thing!!!! Chris also asks: > If any/all of you had to pick >the CD to play for someone that is a "definitive" Happy >CD, which one? (Or is this impossible for various reasons?) This is impossible because they are all *excellent* (the tapes that is, but I am fairly confident that the CD's of the 1st4 will also be good, and judging from 'When the rain came down', the previously unreleased songs should also be exquisite). So buy them all, if you can. But if you absolutely *must* buy only one, then I would say buy 'Warpaint'. It is the most recent one, the one that Happy likes the most, because she could capture the sounds she wanted, unlike the 1st4 where it's just her, a synth, and a guitar, because that was all she had available at the time... This is a musically based selection. If you want choice based on emotional impact then 'one CD just ain't enough' IMHO, since each of the 1st4 contains gems that I (personally) cannot rank. So, skip the emotional impact, go for production quality, and get 'Warpaint'... :) (which by the time it took me to write these lines was also suggested by Greg!! :) ) Angelos ------- 'Silhouettes and shadows watch the revolution, no more free steps to heaven, and it's NO GAME!' -- David Bowie ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 26 May 92 18:20:29 -0400 From: gb10@gte.com (Gregory Bossert) Subject: we fed the fire... here it is, tuesday, and i am not yet recovered from the out-of-ecto (i.e. in-body) experience in CT on sunday... manymanymany thanks to Val and fellow conspiritor Merideth for an ecto-cool time :) highlights included the remarkable reinaction of Happy's hit song, as we stuck a variety of highly flammable objects into the grill and applied flame to no effect whatsoever... even after soaking them in 150-proof rum (smelled *wonderful*, but had no effect, flamation-wise) even a liberal sprinkle of starter fluid proved ineffective -- it took a healthy squirt onto the few pitiful embers, and me blowing ashes into Val's face, to get the coals glowing... i like to think we were simply extending Happy's metaphor to demonstrate the difficulty of the creative process... note that the hot dogs caught fire *quite* easily... i am unclear of the symbolic significance of this fact... a major highlight of the evening was the unexpected call from the unexpected european ectogether, featuring the unexpected Alan Ezust, the unanticipated Kluas Kluge, and unguessed-at Claudia Spix... we were *just* *then* looking at the pictures i had unexpectedly received from C&K when the phone rang... it was a bit spooky and entirely (all together now) unexpected... i can, in fact, think of a poetic interpretation or two about the hot dogs catching fire, but they are perhaps best left for another... well, they are perhaps best left. and then there was the call to H&K!!!! yes, we all huddled around in delight and suspense as jessica dialed, waited, and *gasp* left a message on the AG answering machine... one might of swooned at the excitement... but one didn't. we did drink a bit too much of the ecto-cooler, undiluted by anything relatively healthy (like grain alchohol, for example...) after a few glasses of the green stuff, we were all a bit giddy ;) and the blue jello had people reeling... I don't remember when I first saw it, but I remember that the video struck me more than the song. I'm not really sure why, except that the type of video (style of editing, the movements, etc., etc) struck me as a bit, well, alternative I guess. Didn't care that much for the song (or the video for that matter; it was more interesting than anything else). I've seen that version several times since then, though I'm not sure if it was more on VH1 or MTV. As I said earlier, I caught the "new" version for the first time today. I think I'm starting to like the song more, which I'm sure played some part in my reaction, but I think I like the b/w-plaid-sleeveless version better. It's somewhat boring and cliched, but Sophie looks like she's having _fun_, which seems important with the style of music. It's also a hell of a lot less self-conscious. What's the story with folks releasing multiple videos for a single song? The weirdest example is probably U2, who released video #3 for the song "One" today. The first version was put together by an artist from NYC who has AIDS; it's a stunning video and features no footage of the band whatsoever. The second version, which is much more MTV, has lots of shots of Bono as well as tables covered with empty beer bottles. Boring. Version 3 is a bit more interesting, as all of the band members appear at one time or another in full drag. Just plain bizarre, but really cool in a warped sort of way. Not as good as video 1, but a hell of a lot better than 2! So how many videos do you think Happy will make for "Feed the Fire"? ;-) Jeff |Jeffrey C.
