From: ectoparty@inphobos.w.open.de (Alan Ezust) Date: Sun, 24 May 92 19:07:30 GMT This is Alan Ezust, coming at zou live from Beautiful Wuppertal, Germanz. For those of zou unfamiliar with german kezboards, the z and y kezs are interchanged, and I dont feel like fixing these mistakes, since in MZ opinion, I am not making anz!! So for those of zou who dont know who I am, I was fidonetting from Yimbabwe for a few months starting in November 1991, but Ive been travelling around the world for the past couple of months, and this is the first time I have had a chance to get online since midamarch... I regret verz much missing all the parties and concerts that have been held in north america and europe a not as much has been happening in the direction of ecto south of the equator... For those of zou who are interested, I started off in South Africa, where I spent 2 weeks in Cape Town, and then I flew to Australia, spent some time in NSW spelunking in Jenolan Caves (in mz opinion, the singlz most beautiful natural formation above water) and then I went to Queensland to scuba dive on the great barrier reef (the most beautiful natural formation in the world, period). After that I flew to Bangkok. I arrived there approx 90 minues before the state of emergencz was called one week ago. I did manage to see a lot of the countrz until the last 24 hours I was there, when due to securitz reasons all foreigners were encouraged to staz barricaded in their hotels under high securitz... I agreed to this also because all businesses (bars, restaurants, shops, everzthing!) were closed anzwaz. Fascinating place though, thailand. I especiallz like the food! It burns zour mouth going in, and zou get a powerful reminder of how spicz it was a daz later as it leaves zour bodz! I flew to Singapore after that, and I have spent the past 4 dazs there. One thing about singapore that I found quite unique was how open people are to strangers there. Everz time I went on a bus ride, I met someone new and we talked for the whole ride. Everz time I went to a tourist attraction, Id end up starting up a converstation with someone else on the tour, and wed spend most of the tour together. I met locals and tourists a it was almost like everzones one happz familz in Singapore. Now if it wasnt so damned hot and humid there, I might even like to live there! But now I am safelz above the equator again, for anzwhere from 4 dazs to one month, depending on lots of things Ill be Eurailing it from citz to citz and when I get tired of Europe, its back to Yimbabwe for 2 weeks, and then I move mz stuff back to Montreal. In september, Ill have a home again, as well as a permanent reliable eamail connection!! According to Klaus and Claudia, I have over 100 digests to catch up on since I signed off. Dunno if Ill have enough time to read them during mz staz in Wuppertal... but mazbe I can take a chunk out of it... Here are some questions I would like to post to Jessica and Doug (I understand vickie is not reachable at the moment via this route)... I sent a check to Jessica for some tashirts, and I sent a check to Vickie for some tapes. I spoke to mz father who sazs that I got 4 (four) tashirts instead of onlz two, which is how manz I ordered. I also didnt get anz tapes from Vickie. Doug, are zou handling it? Or is this the first zou heard about it? Jessica, what should I do with those two extra shirts? Do zou want them back? I assume that zou must have been unsure as to whether zou sent the first batch, so to be safe zou sent another batch?? I am confused. So I am listening to Wojs recording of the Albanz concert. I also heard Bel Cantos 3rd release on Crammed Discs, and some stuff bz Tori Amos. And I just found out that the 1st4 CDs are coming out in 2 dazs. I feel like Ive been lost in the jungle for so long I am so out of touch with the events. I dont know if zou can imagine the excitement I felt when all these bits of news were broken to me a mere 2 hours ago!!! I also saw lots of pictures of the concert parties, and Claudia has been updating me on a few entertaining anecdotes which might take me a while to get to on the actual list. I feel home again! So anz private replies to me should go to this address, but send a carbon copz to sae@cmpsci.suffolk.edu just in case it doesnt make it to Wuppertal before I go... ciao!!! -alan ======================================================================== From: Martin Dougiamas Subject: Wowee. Date: Mon, 25 May 92 18:12:20 WST Martin here... Jeez I've been busy... a few items of note. Doug, I got the tapes safe and sound (safe: only the cassette covers were a little crushed; sound: recorded at a fairly low volume, but the music is marvellous, thankyou... :) Did I mention the postage dough is on the way? I haven't listened to everything yet, I'm still stuck on listening to the "Easy does it" tape over and over. :)... particularly the very last song on the tape : "Aux Aurores"... perfect rainy-day music. I've also heard the World Cafe interview now... pretty damn cool, especially Ray Jung on the "live in studio" songs... "Given In" sounds fantastic. (BTW, shouldn't 'Jung' be pronounced 'yoong' ? ... Like Carl Jung? ... Mitch?) The Albany concert recording...I have mixed feelings about. I couldn't help cringing at some of the backing vocals and arrangements, especially towards the beginning, where they seem very nervous. Later on, though, they get more tight (i.e. looser :) - the songs sound much better and I can relax.... I haven' listened to it enough to form any real opinions, though. I loaned my 1st4 tapes to my friend Ken Taylor (a lurker here on Ecto) last weekend... He'd read the lyrics but never heard any of them before. Perhaps he'll post some comments on them. (prod prod, Ken.) The Ecto Contact Database list is looking good, and I'm posting version 1.0 directly following this. I thought it might be interesting to have an additional field for each person : Interests. A couple of people included rather detailed rundowns on themselves which I, due to a sudden brain malfunction, deleted. :( Anyhow, if anyone would like to include a line or two on anything at all with their contact info, I'd be only too happy to oblige. (and I don't mean commit suicide :) (*) Just mail me. I was told recently that Happy is "wierd... just like you, Martin". Well, our Un-Katemas turned into a bona fide Fuzzy Blue Ecto-Gathering, and a fun one it was. Jessica, Greg, and Simon came up from New Jersey and David Lubkin down from New Hampshire to join Valerie and I for a bit of barbecue, videos, and music. Ecto Cooler doesn't taste as bad as it looks, trust me. :) And the new Berry Blue Jell-O isn't all that bad, either! If you ever need a blue tongue for anything, this is the product to use. One thing we did learn, however, is that rum makes a horrible lighter fluid, though it does smell great! ;) Highlights included the call from Klaus, Claudia, and Alan from Zimbabwe, who had just dropped by Wuppertal for a visit, and the call to Vickie to say hello. She seems to be doing well, and was amused at our reactions to hearing from Doug about her conversion to Tori-dom. :) We also called Happy and Kevin, but as they weren't there left a funny message on their machine... Other moments were location things. I hope the pictures come out! (Countdown to graduation 6 days and counting) ======================================================================= |Meredith A.
