Just got back from a week in San Francisco combining my neverending quest for knowledge (I attended a conference) with tourism! I ALMOST went to the Sarah McLachlan concert. I found Bimbo's the night before and was heading there around 6:30pm, when upon exiting the hotel (which was on 4th st near Market - The marriott) I stumbled on a crowd that was burning a police motorcycle...You all have heard about the riots there by now, so I guess all I can say is that they reminded me of my undergrad days in Athens, Greece. I just wish that the people in SF (and LA) had the sense to not loot the stores. That takes a lot away from protesting IMHO. Anyway after being threatened by an arrest simply for being on 4th street, I decided to go back to the hotel only to find out that there was a curfew on... Did Sarah play that night? I know that the Lou Reed concert at Berkeley got cancelled. While on the subject of Berkeley, I went there on Saturday and was impressed with the atmosphere. I didn;t run into any ectophiles, because wearing the Ecto T I am sure they would have stopped me! :) BUT I found the most amazing record store Amoeba records on Telegraph Av. I bought a promo-CD for the new Arson Garden album 'Wisteria' for only $1.95!! Happy content? Yes. I was surprised to find that all the Tower records I visited were selling Warpaint!!! The one on Columbus Av. had it for $13.99 while the one at Berkeley had one priced for $17.99 and one for $18.99!!! Rasputin records in Berkeley had a slot for Happy Rhodes but nothing in it! Amazing. happy is known in SF and NOT A SINGLE STORE IN BOSTON/CAMBRIDGE has Warpaint!!! :( Got a lot of catching up to do with ecto... more tomorrow. Angelos ======================================================================== Subject: Re: Swim Team / Ecto Update From: tlb@bsbbs.columbus.oh.us (Tracy Barber) Date: Mon, 04 May 92 02:02:18 EDT How about a review! ===================================================================== Well, Mitch Elrod and his band "The Swim Team" played at a small club in Troy, NY called the LAst Exit Cafe last night. The crowd ranged from about 20 - 30 people at any given time and the AMA crowd stayed the duration. Don Howe and Don Labriola were there with me. We all grabbed a table next to the band. The headliners "Cactus Loveseats" didn't show up, so this gave Mitch et al a fair shake at a good gig / practice. They came out and played for about an hour. Started the show with "Technical Knowhow", a new tune. Followed up with "Archaeopteryx Place". He did several from "Gander", including "Filled With Blood", "Peal, My Northern Belle", "Come Away Slip Away", "The Muse of Intent", "Surprise Makes Sense To Me", "Raise The Light". They played a speed version of "Tader Tot", which is kind of a joke amongst the AMAers, having heard it on a tape previous. They had an even sound throughout the evening's first set after a volume problem on Mitch's vocals, as you can well imagine. They did quite a few tunes that were done when Mitch played solo at QE2 in March. They broke for a bit and the lead guitarist from "Cactus Loveseat" played about 20 minutes. Considering the situation, he did a very good job up there. I've never heard them before, but 'Twas OK... but we came to see the fab four play. They came out and redid 2 songs from the previous set, "Technical" and another I forgot to mention above. "Private Geometry". Like this one as well as "Muse", but "Muse" could've use a bit more energy, or what ever. Mitch finally got a wee bit small amount of press in our local "Buzz" magazine here in the Capital District. They were playing quite well. The guitarist has some serious potential. The interplay between Mitch and Blaze were present constantly. He plays several different "styles" and does well, not too much flair, doesn't steal the show, but you know he's there. The bassist can play a mean riff as well. The way he plays reminds you a bit of John Entwistle of the Who. The drummer, I (already forgot their names!) didn't follow that well, but he didn't miss a beat, to coin a phrase. I'm never that good with names. (Get a grip!) The future looks bright for them, because as a rumor has it, they will be producing a CD in the near future. What will be on it is anyone's guess, but it should comprise a lot of "Gander" and probably "Technical Knowhow" and "Private Geometry". (guess) Ecto... ====================================================================== Well, if the AMAers go out again, we'll be there in force to support Mitch. Happy Rhodes and Kevin Bartlett were there taking pictures of the band. Happy, are these for the photo album or for the CD? hehe... Kevin was telling me that CDs of the first 4 Rhodes tapes will be out very soon. Also, Kevin is supposed to be working with some other bands to sign to Aual Gratification as well as The Swim Team. I'm sure he'll let us know of this. BTW, Happy and Kevin are working on a album of new material. The future looks pretty good for some local talent! tlb --- * SLMR 2.0 * Incorrigible punster -- do not incorrige! ---- Tracy Barber tlb@bsbbs.columbus.oh.us {n8emr|nstar}!bluemoon!bsbbs!tlb The Big Sky BBS (+1 614 864 1198) ======================================================================== Subject: Re: Ecto Posts From: tlb@bsbbs.columbus.oh.us (Tracy Barber) Date: Mon, 04 May 92 02:03:26 EDT To All: I have been taking reviews from here and posting them on a local Albany BBS called Rockefeller College. This is a local call for him and the local scene has NO OTHER conference like this one. So, there you have it. No answers or advice are given, just a listening ear. Apparently they will even go out and give someone a hug. Every once in awhile, I think in Precious (forgive me, I made a tape from the CD and haven't made a label with the correct song titles yet!!), there a couple of times I think of KaTe. BTW, welcome to all the new ectophiles!!! >Best I could come up with is a reference to the actual "hunger" for >satisfying sounds (poetry, music) that can't be slaked...as if one were >feeding a tapeworm. Sound reasonable, or am I OTL :) Sounds OK, but why does she sing 'Go away'? Does she want to rid herself of the hunger? Are the parasites the 'sappy little wimps'? Funny how I never gave a lot of thought to this line, even though I have used it as a .sig for almost a year now. In greek we use the word parasites to refer to audio interference (excuse my ignorance but is this also done in english?). So I have always associated the 'parasites' to static, that feeds off the noble sounds. And that is why they have to go away. Chris also writes: > Don't remember who mention DG in their last communique, but there >is a one paragrpah blurb about the "performance artist" on p. 212 of the >April Vanity Fair. Nope. She is of greek-amaerican origin, grew up VERY repressed (her father didn't want her to have ANY friends), got a classical training in singing and piano playing, then broke away from her family, (a friend of mine swears he's read in an interview that she was a prostitute for a while), then got into performing. Her work originally was largely anti-church. I heard a performance of Baudelaire's 'Litanies of Satan' which was hair-raising. She had another satan-based cd, which i saw for the first time at amoeba records in berkeley. Then her brother died of AIDS and she focused on that (her 'Plague mass' deals with this issue). Her latest 'The singer' is a MUCH tamer collection of covers of blues and jazz standards, that takes some getting used to! But it has gotten a lot of praise. The latest issue of PULSE! talks about it twice! This has, of course, been very much in the American consciousness the last week or so, no less among all of us than the rest of the nation; but this does not automatically imply that it's the first thing we will want to discuss in the specific forum that is ecto--nor is anything precluding any of us from addressing the topic in these pages if we feel moved to do so. Personal to Valerie: The number of column inches that _Time_ devoted to an ad for _Little Earthquakes_ becomes a little more lucid when you consider that the Atlantic label, for which Tori records, is part of the same Time Warner corporate octopus as the magazine. So much for editorial independence. Personal to nobody in particular: A belated Happy May Day. Had the Aural Gratification corporate octopus known in time, perhaps it could have swung a good deal on billboard space in Red Square. The idea of swapping Happy's albums to the Muscovites for whatever could make Pavlov's provervbial dog salivate (apologia to the cat people on ecto :-) ).
