I'm still reeling from the concert. What a wonderful band, what a great performance. What a P.A.! Back in the old days we hardly ever got that much low bass thru the P.A.; yay! for new technology! Any of you see the NYC show? Alex, I'm glad your post got public 'cause it'll remind me to send a tape to KSmudge for a copy of Sarah on World Cafe. As soon as I get organized... Hello all, Been swamped up to my _ _ _ lately, and haven't had the chance to enjoy a good posting to my favorite mailing list. But...the boss is not in yet...though she's likely to be at any moment and that'll raise my blood pressure for sure...... Anyway, onto business....I never thought *I'd* be one to Happyvangelize.....evangelical behavior is NOT one of my favorite things, y'know....But, if it works out as will be detailed below, then I can accomplish the same sort of thing, and not feel all missionary-like about it. Last semester, Subvertible Paradigm (my hideous radio show) was aired on alternate Tuesday/Wednesdays (0200 Wednesday to 0530). Naturally, I played some Happy on each show. Well, John Sloane (aka Jack Straw) is the guy who has the "Accoustically Sound" show on Sundays ( a long running show with a big listenership (for community radio, that is...did I mention that the station here is WHUS 91.7 FM Storrs, CT (University of Connecticut...HUS come from HUSkies...the school mascot...get it? Huskies...UCONN (Yukon???? yeah, pretty lame, especially when you consider that WHUS can be pronounced "WUSS"...ANyway.......) John Sloane wakes up in time to hear the last half hour of the overnight show.....a coupla months ago, I saw him at the station and he asked "Who's this Happy Rhodes that you're playing....She's great!" I told him about Happy, and instructed him to listen in next show for an extended set. He did, and called me in the air studio and asked how he, accoustic music director (inasmuch as accoustic music is a genre in need of a an actual director) could get some of her CDs for the station....I gave him the NEW AG address and told him to drop my name and all that. We waited and FINALLY he got some CDs (including Rhodesongs, which I don't have yet) I was ecstatic, he was ecstatic....So he played 40 MINUTES of her on his show a coupla Sundays ago....and also dropped notes in the mailboxes of Julie (who does the mostly accoustic show early mornings on Tuesdays) and Melinda (who does the womyn's show on Monday evenings). He even put an unqualified thumbs up type of review on the CD case itself (as is the custom here, whichever music director gets the CD mailed to him/her affixes a small, descriptive sticker to the CD) which said something to the effect of: I'm absolutely blown away by this [CD]. Not "just a Kate Bush clone", but a uniquely talented artist......The secret is out. Thanks, Chris Sampson! ..... So, Happy should be getting regular airplay on Sunday evenings, alternate Monday latenights (the new and improved time for my show), Monday evenings, and alternate Tuesday mornings....and whenever other DJs happen upon the CD in the air studio library...I may even post a sign for the other DJs (there are a few for whom Happy's music would fit in nicely with the less "rock and roll" type of music they play...for instance, George King, who really likes "female indy pop", and who has had a show for ages now..... Just thought you'd all like to know that Happy's being heard in eastern CT...admittedly not a major market share of the music-buying public. We now return you to your regularly scheduled show, already in progress. .----------------------------------------------------------------------. ./| | | |/| Discover your inner evil twin. | Chris Sampson | |/| | chris@neuron.uchc.edu | |/`-----------------------------------------------------------------------' |///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// `------------------------------------------------------------------------' ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 28 Mar 94 12:27:57 -0800 From: Michael G Peskura Subject: Sarah and Bryant I managed to see Sarah's appearance on the Today Show last week. Unless i missed something, her performance was cut to just one song. Bryant Gumbel did a fine job of playing the part of a smarmy git. Thanx to the urging of folks like Neile and woj, i have been drawn into her music and can play "Possession" over and over for hours. I've seen the "Possession" video a few times ... i'm afraid it misses the VERY erotic point of that song. Do you (anybody?) know where I can get the words to that piece? Talulah Gosh did a song with that title and I'm now wondering if this Paul Haynes fellow wrote the lyrics. I've been working on to transcribing the lyrics to all Talulah Gosh songs and Heavenly songs, so that would help with accuracy. The replacement copy of the first full-dress AG newsletter arrived Friday. Happy's comments on her work in progress were indeed interesting. I am, of course, delighted that she likes the HGP. Be that as it may, and as delighted as I am toward her closing sentence of encomium to me, let us not forget the pivotal role that my technical director :-), Doug, played in pulling it all together. I find it interesting how much she liked the track by Samantha Fox-- a lot of people don't seem to take her [SF, not Happy] seriously as a singer. First: "sibling"--I am truly sorry. I was a bit premature in my assessment of Jane Siberry's _WIWAB_. After a few more listens, I can say that I was wrong. I like _WIWAB_. I will remember, in future,to give CD's a fair chance before pronouncing judgemnt. Second: Sorry for the delay. Sue, your Tori concert tape is in the mail as I write this. Now, I was very excited to hear that "The Crow" sountrack came out on tuesday. I rushed out and bought the CD. Here is an overview of the songs and my _initial_ reactions to them... The Cure-"Burn": By far, one of the best songs on the album. This is my bet as to what song the movie will open up with. Machines of Loving Grace-"Golgotha Tenement Blues":Very good song. The sound reminds me of a harder version of Smashing Pumpkins. STP-"Big Empty": Bery, bery good! Typical Stone Temple Pilots song with a mixture of hard rock and a blues sound. Nine Inch Nails-"Dead Souls":I am not a big NIN fan, but I have to say that this is one of my favorite songs on the album. From what I heard, this is low key for a NIN song. Jane Siberry-"It Can't Rain All the Time": This ranks as one of my faves on the album. It catches the feel of the story for"The Crow" best. The question of the power of love and whether it is truly eternal. It reminds me of the way I felt when I first read "The Crow".I likes a lot. Other songs include: Rage Against the Machine-"Darkness" Violent Femmes-"Color Me Once" Rollins Band-"Ghostrider" Helmet-"Milktoast" Pantera-"The Badge" (This song is growing on me) For Love Not Lisa-"Slip Slide Melting" My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult-"After the Flesh" The Jesus and Mary Chain-"Snakedriver" Medicine-"Time Baby III" All in all, this is a fabulous album. Go out and get it. If you can, try and find the trade paperback collection of the comic book. You can find it in most comic specialty stores or possibly in book stores. You'll love the story. You'll love the art. Thak you for your time. Free homemade pongs for everybody who listened. Catch you on the net, Chad Chad Lundgren--------->lundgren_c@music.lib.matc.edu 10223 W.
