It's SPRING! And though it is a grey and rainy day in Baltimore, there are birds singing and little buds on the trees and flowers from bulbs poking their way through the soil. I have a question for you. It's sort of a weird question, and I don't quite know how to phrase it... Do you tend to listen to certain music during different seasons of the year? I do. There's music I listen to and associate with winter, and some with spring, and some with summer, and some with autumn. Thouugh I listen to some things all year 'round, they seem to sound better when I listen to them in their "season." Some of my SpringMusic: Tori Amos ("Little Earthquakes") Kate Bush ("The Kick Inside," "Lionheart") Bizet ("Carmen") Clash (self titled) Julian Cope ("Fried") Yeah, I know it's all *old* stuff, but I've only been Ectophilically enlightened last August, so I won't be able to see where Happy, Sarah, and Jane etc. fit for a while yet. I can't understand why the major labels have ignored Happy so far - with so much dross being released weekly, the labels are missing out on their chance to be a part of music history, no question of that. Wow!" :-) It's really strange - the fact that there's been this amazing music being created for the last seven years or so, and I never knew about it - and likely never would have if I hadn't happened to have joined the Tori mailing list. Makes you wonder just what else is out there, unsigned and unheard. I must say that Happy's music was nothing like I'd expected it to be - the electronics surprised me for a start, as I'd just assumed she'd be more in the piano/acoustic vein, since everyone kept referring to her in the same sentence as Tori. And that's part of the unique nature of the music - her (wonderful) voice is such a striking counterpoint to the stark electronics of "Ecto", and the rhythms of "Warpaint" and "Equipoise". She also seems to have a knack for melody the like of which I have never heard before - both in the main vocal melody and the multi-layered, almost cinematic, backing. There are a few tracks on the tape that sound like they were recorded in Cinemascope... :) > Thank you so much for telling me! It was the first thing I did after hearing the tape for the first time. They'd only throw her into a studio with a "name" producer and try to "refine" her music. I don't care if I have to send to Antarctica to get hold of her albums (thankfully it's only New York... :), I'd rather that than have her music compromised. One question - what was Happy up to in the time between 1987 and 1991, apart from live work with Kevin Bartlett? After four albums in two years, it's surprising that she took four years to do the next one... > > I'm going to pass this cassette around to some friends, some who > That's great to hear too.
