Both times I've seen Tori have been magical. Perhaps it is auditorium/proximity. I was lucky both times -- the first time Vickie got to the theater *really* early and saved me a seat in the front. (THANKS VICKIE!) The second time (yesterday) Valerie got tickets for the front row. (THANKS VALERIE). I can't explain the magic in Tori's performance, but I am mesmerized. I prefer her "unplugged" performance to the CD! It's interesting to see what moves people. Neal is more moved by the CD while I'm more moved by the live performance. Obviously both reactions are valid since music is so personal, but it's neat to see how different people react to different forms. It will be interesting to see how the rest of Ecto feels about this. Still in a trance after the wonderful concert yesterday... ====================================================================== Chip Lueck (Jeff) chip-l@nwu.edu "I want to be a lawyer, I want to be a scholar. I noticed that their CD is available even at the local > Large Clueless Record Store. Their music falls into a few categories. Some of it is high-spirited, eminently danceable marimba-heavy tribal stomps, some of it is more moody and brooding. They have two CD's out, _D'Cuckoo_ and _Umoja_. I'd *definitely* get _D'Cuckoo_ first, since it has those high-spirited songs (which is what they're best at) and _Umoja_ doesn't. It's also got a great cover of "No One Receiving" by Brian Eno. Date: Fri, 25 Mar 1994 17:20:11 -0600 (CST) Well, I personally was blown away by the concert last night. As both Chip and Vickie have mentioned, we had really really wonderful seats. I can't make any comparison to previous Tori concerts, as this was my first one - I'd also never seen anything but still photos, so I had no idea what presence she had, and that could account for me being totally enveloped by the experience. I was very much moved by it - I think most of the time I was unconciously clenching my hands together, or digging my fingers into my leg, or just holding my fingers to my lips in utter amazement. I know that I'm GUSHING, but I've never seen a performer with such an incredible presence before an audience, who immediately establishes a rapport with those lucky enough to be wrapped (and rapt) in her piano and voice. I was overwhelmed. Nothing more to say, I guess. Just thought I'd add my ectophilic voice to the "view-of-Tori-concerts" thread that appears to be developing. MJM said that he wasn't as moved by her, knowing what to expect since he had seen her before. He can expand on that if he wants - I guess so far it's me and Chip for, Mike and Neal against ;) (or was that neale or neile?) kAthlEEN , who can squeeze out a "neal" and a "neale," but can't manage a "neile," even with the rest of my name. ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 25 Mar 94 19:08:06 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Hey Bday HAPPY BIRTHDAYY to Valerie Nozick!! This was the first time Neal had seen Tori--but it was my second. The first time I saw her I sat in the front row, dead center, and was completely blown away. Tuesday night's concert in L.A. was also phenomenal, as concerts go. However, we were sitting back closer to row 30 (dead center), and it just wasn't the same. Also, although the light show was pretty cool, I think it detracted from her music (though I loved to see her backlit silouhette as she crouched at the piano.) I think one of the main differences between the two shows Neal was comparing was the level of enthusiasm the performers brought to the show. Tori, an accomplished performer, knows how to handle an audience. Yet touring has become somewhat old hat for her, and she is already counting down the 230-odd shows she has left on this tour. Jewel on the other hand brings a whole new found enthusiasm and awe to her performances. Awe at the growing number of people who are crowding into the coffee house to see her each week. Awe at the varied reactions to her songs. But, to be fair, Jewel isn't just good because she's new. She's a fabulous performer. An incredible song-writer, a great singer, an accomplished guitarist--and she even yodels! And the amazing thing is she's only 19! One of these days maybe Neal and I can get a tape put together of some highlights from her show and send it to the tape project. She truly is one of the most expressive performers I've seen. Just the way she sings the word "angel" is enough to bring a tear to your eye. So, what does all this rambling mean. I guess it means that both shows truly were great. But I feel that Tori, while still an excellent performer, is now getting to the stage of her career, where the performances are no longer as new and exciting to her as they once were. And also, that smaller venues are much better and more intimate than larger venues. I'd love to see Tori squeeze her Bosendorfer into a little coffee houes and play sometime! This whole issue reminds me of October 1982 when, within a week of one another, I saw The Who and Missing Persons. The Who, supposed one of the greatest performance bands ever, were, in my opinion, incredibly boring. They were ending their farewell tour (one of many) and just didn't have their heart in it. It kind of felt like Pete Townshend was going--oh yeah, I better swing my arm again. While, Missing Persons, on the other hand, had truly a magical night. Totally awed by their reception, they put on a great show, and brought an energy to the performance that was incredible. It was one of the best concert experiences I've ever had, and I realize that that is probably hard to believe. Well, those are my thoughts. I hope everyone who gets to see Tori has a magical experience. She is definitely worth seeing--no matter how bad your seats are--but the closer up, I think the experience becomes exponentially better. I hope she continues to play small venues. Now that I'm on spring break, I can do all the things I've been meaning to do for ages...like actually writing a little trivial something for the ecto pages! Wednesday, I picked up the new Moon Seven Times CD. I found it at Tower. There were three copies of it. It was marked at $13.99, but oooh, the woman at the counter said they had been playing the CD in the store earlier in the day (!), so she did some cash register hacking and let me have it for $11.99. What luck! And it's a fine album, too! I've never noticed Tower playing such obscure artists before. Are m7x really popular now? Hmmmmmm.... Frente has been mentioned a few times lately. I've heard the whole 7-or-so-song release, and all the songs are quite poppy and enjoyable. It's something I plan on buying. Hi everybody, after I heard that Sarah would be playing at the Today Show yesterday I got really desperate to see that performance. First of all it's Sarah and second I think "Possession" is to die for. Anyway, I was ever so happy when I spotted that the Today Show is actually been shown on Super Channel everyday. The strange thing was that one part (one hour) was shown from 13:00 - 14:00, (or was it 13:00 - 13:30 and 14:00 - 14:30??) the other one from 18:00 - 19:00. As I was at work over the day I programmed the video recorder and watched the late part "live". I got really excited when the lady actually said that Sarah would be on the show, BUT: THEY CUT HER OFF!!!! It was already about 3 minutes to 7 and there was still no Sarah, but I kept on hoping to the very last minute. Well, they didn't show her at all. I checked the video text and she was listed there together with a writer, and actor and somebody else. Everybody was shown, but not Sarah. So, Uli, I gave you a false alarm - you haven't missed *a thing*! Well, the good side of this is that I don't need to worry any more that I might have seen Tori when she was on the Show a while ago - I'm confident now that they cut her off, too! Ilka (*very* disappointed) = ) P.S.: Hey, I like John Sandoval's idea about these Happy cards to share out! ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 26 Mar 94 16:35:07 EWT From: Ilka Heber Subject: Rachel Morrison Hi everybody, wow - I have something very exciting to tell you today!!! I found a new singer you should all check out. One day, about a month or two ago, I was CD shopping in Frankfurt. One CD caught my eyes, I couldn't exactly say why. It showed the picture of a woman in a white dress standing in a field of yellow flowers and looking into the distance. The artist: Rachel Morrison, the album title "Live at Phoenix". I took that CD and walked to the counter where you can have a listen. They put the CD on for me and I thought straight away "Hey, this sounds good!" So I bought the CD and listened to it a bit more at home. The more I listened to it, the more I liked it. Re- cently I learnt that Rachel is actually going to play live in Frank- furt, so we decided we'd go there. The venue was small with about 100 - 150 people. They only opened up at 9 and Rachel didn't come on until almost 10:30. Her husband Tom is playing the guitar and operates a bass drum and Rachel is singing. It's a bit hard to define the style of music they make, it's certainly folk, and just to give you some idea I'd say it's a little like Suzanne Vega meets Annie Lennox. Sounds a bit strange, but believe me, this is *great* stuff! They did one song that Mahalia Jackson used to sing (sorry, I don't remember the title!) but all other songs where written by them. Rachel has an incredible voice: very strong and the vocal range is pretty impressive. She has an amazing stage presensence, and seems very natural and professional on the stage. Her husband Tom is a very good guitarist and together they got everybody in the club on their feet! Unfortunately, the set only took about one hour (including the the encores). I waited a little while and then asked somebody who was taking care of the stage, whether there's a chance that I could get an autograph. He sent me to a door that led backstage and said I should just go ahead and knock. Well, I just did as he said! A young girl opened the door and let me in after I told her what I wanted and Rachel confirmed that she's quite willing to sign my CD. I had a little chat with Rachel (who is actually English) and told her how fantastic the performance was. I pointed out that I was surprised that they place in small places like that, but she seemed very sur- prised and said: "Small??? This was a *big* venue!!" I asked about other gigs, but she didn't really know, so she called Tom. I was very surprised to find out that he is actually German. He is very, very friendly and told me that they will be in Munich soon, which is a wonderful coincidence, because I happen to be there that day, too, so I'll see them again. They asked me for my address, be- cause they are setting up a distribution list. Rachel used to be in a band called Bliss (Tom worked with them but was not in the band). They did two albums. About 6 months ago she had a baby boy, therefore they were on a break and are now only starting again with their music. Somebody recorded one of their performances on an 8-track tape and a big record shop (World of Music) decided to bring it out on CD. That was exactly the issue I bought. In the meantime they had another batch of CDs made, this time by Rough Trade. They are also working on a studio album right now. I told them about the Computer Network and that I was thinking of posting a review about the concert and recommend them to all of you. Especially Tom seemed to like this idea. He promised that he'll provide me with some more information and a tour schedule and I'll pass all this information on to you. If you ever get a chance to see them, don't think twice about it. I promise that you are going to have a great evening. They sell their CD at the door, too. Maybe you should ask your local record shops or radio stations about Rachel and Tom's record - I'm sure, they'd be happy about any promotion they can get, and they are certainly worth it - a lot more people should get to hear this wonderful music. I have to add, though, that the CD is only out in Germany right now, possibly you could also find it in the rest of Europe. I assume that America still has to wait for them a little. I had the idea to make a tape for Rachel and Tom with some of the singers we talk about on this list. This is what I put on it: I Say (Happy) Wrong Century (Happy) Warpaint (Happy) Possession (Sarah) Drawn to the Rhythm (Sarah) Temple (Jane Siberry) Calling All Angels (J. Siberry & K.D. Lang) Dreaming (Ashley Maher) Laughter in the Rain (Ashley Maher) Washington Square (Heidi Berry) Happiness (Lisa Germano) Everyone's Victim (Lisa Germano) All Souls Night (Loreena McKennitt) Maybe an Angel (Heather Nova) Shaking the Doll (Heather Nova) Mary (Tori) Flying Dutchman (Tori) Mexican Moon (Concrete Blonde) Close to Home (Concrete Blonde) Under the Ivy (Kate Bush) I hope they'll like it, I'll give it to them on April 2 in Munich.
