Hey Bday ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 22 Mar 1994 22:54:22 -0500 (EST) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: mump and smoot Hi! I didn't get a chance to stop by the record store today, so I'm still without Loreena McKennitt's new one and M7X, as well. Tomorrow I may be able to remedy that situation. :> (Though judging by the credit card statements I got in the mail today, I hope they're on sale... :P) While we're on the subject of cool Canadian artists, allow me to mention the two *really* cool Canadian clowns I just experienced at the Yale Repertory Theatre. Mump and Smoot are from Toronto (they were spawned at Second City in 1987), and are performing two works, _Ferno_ and _Caged_ at the Rep this month in rotating repertory. Tonight was _Ferno_: Mump and Smoot go on vacation, but on the way Mump crashes the plane and they end up in Hell. They speak a unique gibberish that is only occasionally peppered with a vaguely English word, but their excellent body language and use of tone and inflection leave you with little doubt as to what they're saying. They are also heavily into audience participation, and luckily the audience tonight had some willing and able victims. (Not me, though... :}) At several points I laughed so hard I was in pain. Everything about this show was excellent, especially the music, composed for the show by David Hines. Any Canadiphiles heard of him? I would be very interested in a recording of his music... Mump and Smoot have an address listed in the program, so I'm thinking of writing to ask about this. If you hear of a performance by these two clowns in your area, by all means don't miss it. I can get a discount to see _Caged_, and if I can find the time, I'm going! Anxiously awaiting Sarah concert reports from the Phillyphiles in attendance (Could one of you please tell me what time the show ended? I need to figure out when to tell my friend to meet me outside of Town Hall on Friday night. Thanks!)... ***************************************************************************** *Meredith A. It was at the party that was held at Tom Hanks' appartment. I don't remember the occassion, but I'm pretty sure that's where the song came in. Actually I heard the song first during PG's tour last year and I was wondering where it came from! I was so happy for Tom Hanks that he got the Oscar!! Normally I'm not that interested in those Award Thingies, but when I watched "Philadelphia" I really thought that he deserves every possible Award there is for that wonderful performance. I never thought much of him as an actor, but I guess he just had the wrong roles. I was never as touched by a performance as Tom's in "Philadelphia"! Actually, I want to take this opportunity do post something else. In the beginning I didn't get around to it, then I forgot, I guess, and now it's pretty late... But still, I was very, very sad to hear that John Candy had died! I never liked slapstick comedy too much, but I always liked Candy, as we was such a warm, "human" person. He was still so young... I'm very sad about it!!! On a different note: could somebody please be so kind and let me have a discographie of Concrete Blonde? I really got into them!!! I just *love* "Mexican Moon"!!! Does anyone have any idea whether they plan to tour soon? Furthermore about the Ecto Gathering in Scotland: I've been "talking" to Steve Fagg and it seems that there might be a possibility that we shift the party to Saturday the 11th, rather than the Sunday. This is just an idea, and it would be great to hear from the others who plan to attend what they think about it. I just found Sunday a little inconvenient, as Monday is a work day, and we might have to make our way back to Germany on Sunday night. Would anyone like me to pick this up for them? "Glow Stars" made the best releases of 1993 list of both myself and (I believe) Tim Cook. Definitely ecto-fodder - shades of Tori (sans piano), All About Eve and many other favourites here. Based on recent experience mailing copies of "Mirmama" to a couple of US ectophiles, I can predict that the incremental cost of postage and packing to the USA would be #1.66. I saw them in Cincinnati back in October or November, and I recall someone posting that they'd seen them in Washington DC in January or February. The bad news is that following their current tour there is no more Concrete Blonde. Johnette is supposedly embarking on a solo career. So if you have a chance to see them, certainly do. Currently she lives here but she's a Canadian "gonnabe". She is intimate with the whole Toronto scene and in particular the Jane crowd: all her musicians, John Switzer, etc. etc. She has one tape by Ken Myhr (which I stole and buried in my backyard so no one could find it) which I taped and listened to on the way to work and it is great! She said he also sent her another one once (my impression is you can't buy these in the store) and she was going to go home and look for it. I also taped Fat Man Waving featuring Rebecca Campbell. Tam and I spent a few hours just playing music for each other from our collections: it was a blast! There's so much ectoid material she's never heard (no wonder since some of it is only available in Germany and Australia!) and she played me lots of canadian stuff. So now I have a big shopping list for montreal. When I've typed it all in, I'll send it off to ecto. Tam and Art Martinmaki are in a band called Foreigners w/o Accents. They have recorded some demos. The 3 songs I have heard are great. They are both musicians (they teach and have played jazz). They are each multi-instrumentalists and they do all the recording themselves. They're hoping Toronto will present a more fertile market for them. This is definitely ecto-quality stuff and before long more of you will have heard it, I hope. I gave them C&V's number and they're going to get in touch. BTW, she thinks both FTE and WIWAB suck. She seems to be in the Switzer camp regarding the siberry/switzer split, so I think she is a bit biased there. We argued a teeny bit about FTE and WIWAB but hey, everyone's got there opinion. I'm sure you'll all be hearing more from Tam (I told her to get thee to a computer and subscribe to something to get online) via myself / Vickie soon. If you think you can help her out promoting her music (like playing it on a show or have some inside sontact of some kind) she'll almost certainly send you a kit and a demo tape. It's good stuff and I heartily recommend it. You can write to Foreigners w/o Accents: 20135 stony island ave. Chicago Heights, IL 60411; or call her at 708-758-1863. She is outspoken, gregarious, and likes all the same music we do. Natch she had never heard of happy but from the few things I played her I'd say we've hooked another one. I leant her my spare copies of VI and Poise. I also played the Shawn Colvin song about Jane to her to see if she could make sense out of it. Has anyone else here made sense out of it? Also, we both wondered aloud why Jane's not-a-tour never made it to Chicago. Anyone know? Maybe she was avoiding Tam. :-) (Tam claims Jane has heard her demos and stopped talking to her. Feeling threatened? Who knows. It must have something to do with Switzer.) So this is fun, ay? I met Tam, btw, at Moxy Fruvous show. I'll be here, I'll be ecto. I'll be in Montreal. It's amazing how much more these things can get around now with the internet. I've never heard this particular Neiman Marcus/cookie variant; the legend is usually based around a cake. The cookies in Ilka's story may or may not be delicious, but the recipe certainly didn't cost anyone $250, and they did not originate at Neiman Marcus. For more urban legend fun, check out any of the wonderful books by folklorist Jan Harold Brumvand. In a brief obnoxious non-blurb before Liz's show, a local critic noted the above comparison occured simultaneously in Spin and the LA Times without having any bearing to the album or support from the press kit. Then again, the local crits are jerks, and this one chose to make his comments while highlighting the fact that the Meatmen were in town, only mentioning Phair for the odd contrast for her playing the same night. Oh, and Vickie, I bought the first Mouth Music. Lou's had both, but I wanted my very own Sein O! and love it. I'll probably buy the other some day too. Don't have the International Collection (yet). If I could have attached the binoculars to my head, I definitely would have. The way she used the piano to flesh out the music that was recorded with many more instruments was really cool. I loved how she twisted and bent all the songs around. I was only a bit disappointed with the use of backing tapes on God and Cornflake Girl. Both were excellent, but CG sounded exactly like the album. It still packed a lot of punch though. It seemed like those two, with the tapes, were the most faithful to the recorded versions. With the binocs, I was amazed at how expressive she was when she performed. I was completely captivated. I could even get a little of that watered down famous eye contact, which I did see in action during the press conference. Maybe tomorrow I'll have a set list. I'll listen to the tape while I pack for my big Yucatan Peninsula trip tonight (pack not trip). Neal ======================================================================== From: Neil K. The Barenaked Ladies' cover of "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" (which was nice but lacked the characteristic bass pattern) helped kickstart their career. It was marketed as "Canadian artists covering Bruce" but it was really more like "Toronto artists covering Bruce" for those into Canadian regional politics. As for "recording whores?" Humph! > o Roche Voicoise Do you mean Roche Voisine? He's a Quebecois crooner who's recently released an English language album. I assume he's trying to pull a Celine Dion and sing MOR pap in English to break the lucrative American market. Right now he's a big fish in a small pond - the Quebec market, though dedicated, ain't exactly huge, and it's rare that a French-language Quebecois artist gets much by the way of sales in English Canada. > If anyone knows or has heard any of these (aside from what > has already been discussed here) please post. Thanks! Holly and I were talking the other day and wondering why nobody (aside from Neile) has talked about Spirit of the West. They are totally brilliant, methinks! They started out doing Celtic-inspired folk, particularly their early albums (Tripping up the Stairs, Labour Day) but their last two albums (Go Figure and Faithlift) are much harder rocking recordings with only musical quotes of their former Celtic style. Save this House, which came between the two phases, sort of fits in the middle but leans a bit more to the folk side. Right now I think "Faithlift" is my favourite... Anyway, I'd check them out for sure! They write and perform very well-crafted songs, and their lyrics are always very intelligent and thought-provoking. (sometimes I wonder if their relative lack of commercial success has something to do with the fact that they don't have dumb-ass lyrics) They're also terrific in concert. The fact that they're from Vancouver has, of course, nothing to do with my enthusiasm towards their music. ;) - Neil K. -- 49N 16' 123W 7' / Vancouver, BC, Canada / neil_k_guy@sfu.ca ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 23 Mar 1994 14:13:04 -0800 (PST) From: Ectophiles Guide Subject: Re: Re: Canada Shopping List Our mjm asks: > Alan corrects: > |[In message "Canada Shopping List" on Mar 23, Mike Mendelson writes:] > | > || o Roche Voicoise > | > |Don't you mean Roch Voisine? > > Probably. Tam wasn't sure of the name. are he/she/they any good? He's awful. Sap sap sap. My mother got it for Christmas and played it once and I almost went into saccharine shock. :P > And how does she get those cool guitar sounds out of her piano > (I assume that's what she's doing). Used a Marshall amp on her piano. I love the sound, though some folk here don't--Steve Fagg, was it you who didn't like that? > And is the last song a Billie Holiday song? It's a song that was written for her to sing (I think). In any case, her version of it is certainly the best known version. I didn't really expect much out of Tori's version of it because I love the Billie Holiday versions so much (my dad still has an original 78 of it), but I think she did well with it. > Has anyone actually seen tori in concert this tour? Art Liestman, Art's wife (not on ecto), Michael Peskura, Jim and I saw her on Sunday night. It was wonderful, even if our seats were in the balcony. Between the 5 of us we had 2 pairs of opera glasses and a pair of binoculars and that helped a lot. Without them she was just wonderful noise and a little spec beside a huge piano. With them she was dynamite. I think she's getting better and better as a performer. It will never be like it was seeing her at the Backstage in May '92, though. They're selling _Under The Pink_ at the local Costco. She's still our girl, but she's also everyone else's. I'm happy for her, but the chances of meeting her now or receiving the Tori stare again are minimal. There was both a preview and a review in the _Seattle Times_ and the reviewer said she's going to have a play a bigger hall next time. I guess next time the binoculars might not be enough. > Is there an opener? Does she play any of the "b-sides"? Only "Sugar" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (the best version I've heard of that yet). None of the new ones. She played more songs from _Little Earthquakes_ than anything it seemed like. And she didn't have the prepared piano to do "Bells For Her" which is my favourite song on _Under The Pink_. The opener (who is touring with her) is Bill Miller, who is a Native American singer/songwriter. He only did four songs, part of which I liked, but he's not the greatest songwriter (meaning the songs seemed a little expected both lyrically and musically). I love the flute he played and there were wonderful moments. Neal asks: >Am I the only person in Ecto that thought Philadelphia was an ok, but by no >means great movie, and that Tom Hanks was horrible? Nope. I thought it was all right. A little too formulaic for my tastes. I didn't think Tom Hanks was horrible, but I certainly didn't think his performance was that exceptional. ======================================================================== Subject: MAJOR NEWS! Date: Wed, 23 Mar 94 17:28:07 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Just found out that Loreena McKennitt will be playing at Gaston Hall (site of the recent Sarah McLachlan show I raved about) on Friday, May 13th at 8:00pm. Miraculously, this is when Ecto's own Cathy Guetzlaff will be in DC. Mike, can I bug you to snag tickets? (Yeah, yeah, I know, I still owe you for one of those Sarah tix...SOON!). We'll have to discuss how many. OH, SHIT. Is that the week you're in Vegas? We also have to decide whether or not to get a ticket for Beth since we don't know her May plans. Cathy 'n Mike, please drop me mail about this. In any event, this is the first I've heard of any Loreena dates in the US on her upcoming tour and I must admit to some excitement. With any luck, this will be General Admission...the front row seats I had last time I saw her were mindblowing. Incidentally, Gaston Hall is a really cool venue. It used to be a church, and it resides on the third floor of a huge building on the Georgetown University campus. Great balcony, pretty good acoustics, at least they were from where I was sitting. For those who haven't seen Loreena yet, know that she's even better live. Jeff |Jeffrey C.
