[review deleted or as another netter once said, text bobbited] Just wanted to note that in the new _Georgia Strait_ there's an ad for a Perfume Tree cd release party on Thursday for their latest, _The Suns Running Out_. I also wanted to note that I'm not particularly a fan of ethereal/gothic (I have one Cocteau Twins album, one Dead Can Dance album and feel no need to own more of either of these bands and have various others) but something about Perfume Tree really catches my attention and makes me want to listen to the discs I already have of theirs obsessively. I really like the way her voice intertwines with the instruments, and I think the rest of the band's talent is enormous. I have to go listen to it again (and again). Actually, we're going out tonight to buy a second copy of _dust_ because 5 out of every 6 times we play it, our player skips to the middle of the second song and ejects the disc. Anyone have this kind of problem before? The disc is clean and there's a tiny scratch on it which doesn't seem ot affect play on any of our other machines. Mind you, this player is 9 years old now. Maybe its musical taste is getting stodgy. BTW, I agree with Angelos: _Warpaint_ is still my favourite Happy disc, and everytime I play it strikes me anew how truly outstanding her songwriting and singing are. She's really something special. Thanks to you folks who talked about her enough on rec.music.gaffa that I bought _Warpaint_ about two years ago now. --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 21 Mar 94 21:23:19 EST From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (the king of spain) Subject: ectopics ezust@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca (Alan Ezust) sez: >Tori doesn't deserve any royalties for those sales anyway, since she is >shamelessly allowing her record company to pray on the poor soles who like >her a lot, but have better things to spend their money on than her STUPID >STUPID CD singles. ouch. i agree with you except that a) tori is not the person responsible for this british double cd single thang and b) i'm not a fish. ;) seriously though, the whole uk single chart fiasco is really getting to be a problem for non-uk markets (such as the us) where singles are not the prime unit to be moved and are not priced as cheaply as they are in the uk. if singles were considered a marketable seller in the states, i am sure that there would be one or two maxi singles with all the non-lp tracks on them. however, that is not the case. For someone in an area like ours, maybe (though I don't really buy that, since most of the stations that carry World Cafe around here don't exactly welcome DJs off the street with open arms - public radio is a business just like any other). But in a place like Iowa, there just aren't that many people who are interested in/able to put together a show like that on any sort of regular basis. The locally produced "alternative" show on KUNI, Night Music is done by one guy, 4 hours a night, 5 days a week. I'm sure he'd welcome some help and from what I heard the station would welcome more volunteers, but the interest just isn't there. They need the World Cafe there. There should be a law against this kind of >commercialism. 1.) Tori isn't at fault here. Her record company is. 2.) If you were to look at Tori's contract, I'm 99.9% sure that you would find a clause in there completely exempting her from any say in how her music is marketed. Her job is to make the music and promote it. Atlantic/WEA International's job is to sell it. And if Atlantic/WEA decrees that they're going to do so by creating bajillions of little CD singles with tons of totally yummy b-sides to make them all the more tantalizing to us slimy consumer fans, then that's what they're going to do. If Tori ever puts her foot down and says, "That's slimy, I'm not going to write any more b-sides for you", then the record company has two options. They can either say, "Okay then, we'll just fill the rest of the disc with really bad remixes and/or other cuts from the album", or they can say, "Sorry babe, you're out of a contract." Either way, the fans get screwed. I, for one, would rather have more excellent Tori music to savor. Nobody does b-sides as well as she does, so why don't you just sit back and enjoy it? She was very impressive, and I picked up the CD too. I found her to be like a more down to earth Sinead O'Conner, though I like the slightly softer P.J. Since I bought it, it _has_ been mentioned on Ecto, but that only proves how huge my stack of CD's I have yet to listen to is. :) Lyrically, the group's songwriters (mostly Linford Detweiler) concentrate on the subject of love, looking at it from many different directions and moods. The only consistent emotion stretching is an optimistic belief in love, even on the definitely sad songs. However, the lyrics tend towards the emotional and evocative rather than descriptive, so it's tough to figure out what some of the songs are exactly about. Yet they still speak to the heart through some rich and imaginative metaphors. Musically, the centerpiece is Karin Bergquist's voice, a rich, low pitched voice (which reminds me of someone on whom I cannot put my finger :( [No, not KaTe :) (With female artists, aren't comparisons with KaTe reaching the level of all unusual meats being compared with chicken? :) )]). Just call it wonderful. Some memorable melodies and hooks only add to her strength. The music itself borrows from many different forms of music from ethereal to rock to folk to even rap. Yet these influences merely color the music which has the group's own stamp, relatively sparse and not too distinctive. Yet somehow, it all works! I am going to get myself a tape or CD of this soon (It's on a record label called "Lunatik Asylum"), but this is all the info I can supply you with at the moment. And of course, how can forget about Loreena McKennitt, who just came out with The Mask And The Mirror last week? It meets my expectations beautifully... Track 1 sounds like a Dead Can Dance song (from Into the Labyrinth) with Loreena singing instead of Lisa Gerard... Very fascinating. Track 2 sounds like it should have been on the Visit.
