It happened to me too! BTW, I managed to get a NIN ticket for the Warfield. I wore off the redial button of my phone, but I got one (reserved seating, of course, I am too old for moshing :) ). Is anybody else in the Bay Area going? And while on the NIN subject, has anybody noticed that the theme of TDS is repeated in Closer, near the end? Are the two songs linked? And what about the moths and flies on the cover? I would ask in alt.music.nin, but I need to take a deep breath before posting there. It's a good example of why alt. newsgroups suck and mailing lists are better. On an ectophilic note, I picked up a few CDs from the clearance and other racks of Amoeba. I will spare you the details but comment on the ones that featured female vocals. a) Mae Moore- Bohemia. I really like the title song. The rest is also pretty good, a mellow antidote to NIN :-) b) Sun 60-Hold On (promo). I read about them in a.m.a. and checked it out for $.50, and it's VERY good. Is the rest of the album as good as this song? c) Red-Redder. Well, this was also at the CDsingles clearance racks, and for $.50 I decided to check it out. She has a very nice voice, and the songs are on the folk/country side, but yet they are very pleasant. Anybody know her? d) Arson Garden- Drink a drink of you. This poor band is all over the clearance racks, and I keep picking up their Cds so that I can give them away as gifts. Their new album 'The Belle Stomp' was supposed to be released in early March but I haven't seen it anywhere in the Bay Area. Any ectophiles in Indiana, or the east coast know anything about it? woj? Jeffy? Greg? And on the subject of Happy Rhodes, I listened to Warpaint the other day after a LONG time, and realized that it is indeed my absolute favourite Happy Rhodes album. 'Warpaint' is a song that is SO good, it's scary. Cannot wait for the new one. BTW, has anybody taken any guesses on what BTC which might be the new album's title stands for(based on the newsletter which I still haven't sent to Mike, who volunteered to scan it in :( )? My vote is 'Before the Colossus' :-) Enough rambling for the day Angelos PS. I forgot to mention that D^2 was kind enough to let me borrow his Linda Brady CD. I listened to it a couple of times, and will agree that it's pretty good. 'Rented Tuxedo' and 'Smell of the Newsprint' are my two favourites, I think. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 21 Mar 94 17:14:33 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Hooray for you Ron!! It didn't grab me at first, but repeated playing has plowed it into my head. Curiously, I think it's the only album that has grabbed me with its lyrics *before* I caught on to the music. I think my fave track is "The Waitress", but others are right be hind it. (Thanks to Anthony Horan (I think) for pointing out that "Bells for Her" was improvised; it makes a lot more sense knowing that.) I also borrowed (from the some person from whom I borrowed UTP), the Liz Phair and Body Count (!) albums. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't understand the buzz about Phair. Musically, recordingwise, and lyrically, she seems to teeter on the verge of competence; after about 8 listenings, the only songs I can even remember are "Flower" and "Fuck and Run". Well, with a better engineer, she may grow to be another Joan Jett, but I'm not holding my breath. (BTW, the review mention the album has some sort of connection (other than the title) to the Stones' "Exile on Main Street", but, since I don't know that album, what the connection might be escapes me...) Anyway... after well over a year, I finally have a job again. Starting Monday, I'll be at Zeneca Inc. in Wilmington, Delaware, writing programs to lasso and corral lotsa text. Date: Sun, 20 Mar 94 00:16:12 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Mike and I just got back from Gaston Hall, where we experienced Sarah. We were running a bit late and though we'd expected to get there before the friend who was joining us to get in line for the general admission show, we actually arrived *after* said friend (who had to metro and bus in from way out in Rockville). Fortunately, *he* was sensibly early, and we were able to procure FRONT ROW SEATS!!!!! Just off of center, maybe 6 or 8 feet from Her. And right in front of David Sinclair. And I nabbed a set list afterword (though it's actually rather inaccurate) The show was mindboggling. Spellbinding. And really damned good to boot. She played a good mix of songs, including: Plenty Drawn to the Rhythm Good Enough Wait Out of the Shadows (first verse only, segue into...) Home Ice Fear I Will Not Forget you (segue into) Path of Thorns Hold On Into the Fire Possession Encore 1: Mary Steaming Encore 2: Ice Cream Fumbling Towards Ecstasy ----------- While I missed the last tour (sob) I do have a tape of the WFNX broadcast, so I already had an idea of what to expect. As usual, Sarah has completely revamped most of the songs, extending them, changing arrangments, and generally presenting a fresh, new sound to her audience. Her voice was exquisite, doubly so as she told us she'd had strep for the past week and wasn't sure she'd even be able to sing. One of the songs on the set list not performed was "Ben's Song," scheduled right before "Fear." Based on her comments about her voice, I can't help but think that she opted not to try two very vocally demanding songs in a row. It was definitely astounding, and I can't recommend seeing her any more highly than this: GO SEE HER. Or something like that. ;-) ----------- Mike here: (well, no, actually, this is jeffy typing, but only because mike (matthewm@sgate.com) has his right hand in a cast due to the carpal tunnel surgery he had on it yesterday...that's right, he forced himself to go to this concert despite SURGERY. The circumstances were rather cool...I went to the store to pick up the Red Shoes (it was around my birthday and I'd been waiting!) and I saw FTE there though it wasn't supposed to be around for a few months yet. After enthusing about both to my friend for awhile I bought Kate. He bought something himself and then outside handing me Sarah MacLachlan and said Happy Birthday. I didn't even see him buy it! It was a surprise and made my day.. So onto Kate...I had only heard the one single and I don't count on singles much because I always need to hear her albums in entirety. After listening to a few times I decided it was great.:-) I couldn't help myself. Listening to her albums is always an interesting experience...I think to myself, where is she coming from this time? And to me she seemed to be saying, hey come on over and hang out for a while with me and my friends. It's a little late and she's quite talkative and though I don't know exactly what she is referring to all the time, it doesn't matter because I have my own associations. It's essentially about love and loss and memories. She seems to be rather upset about a love affair (And so is love, Top of the City, All I want is you) And concerned with spirituality (Lily, Why do I love you). Her family stops by for a while and everyone gets a little tipsy and silly (Constellations of the Heart). I also notice that fame seems to being wearing a little on her (Rubberband Girl, The Red Shoes) and she feels a bit constrained maybe. I listen to her all night watching the changes, the sadness, the memories, the goofiness, the stress and fatigue, the loss and the love. Thats why I love it. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Well, I spent alot of time on the Red Shoes so I won't say much here except its fantastic. The layering of guitars and instruments and her voices floating above the music, clear and high and low and like honey, sweet with a lingering aftertaste, dragging across my mind. I drown in it. She's coming here next month and I will walk to the concert hall if I must to hear her sing.:-) Goodnight all.. (BTW, the review mention the album has some sort of > connection (other than the title) to the Stones' "Exile on Main Street", > but, since I don't know that album, what the connection might be escapes > me...) Joan Jett? Ow. :/ A certain knowledgeable ectophile whose identity I forget informs me that _Exile in Guyville_ (yes, Ethan manages to get the title right this time) is structured as a track-by-track response to _EoMS_, which is *almost* enough to make this particular Generation X-er actually buy a Stones album. Anybody with both albums want to fill us in? Saw Liz and the Spinanes on Friday night (we'll forget about their opening act, Sister Psychic, IMHO an ultimately forgettable bunch of Bob Mould wannabes), and judging from the amount of discussion about both artists lately I thought I'd report back. First off, I wish the sound mix could have been better for both. Singer/guitarist Rebecca Gates of the Spinanes has a relatively low vocal range, which mixed badly tends to hit you right in the chest at the same time that you have no idea what she's singing. Yet I had to admire her passion, and even more so that of her sole accompanist, drummer Scott Plouf. Maybe it's because I'm a drummer as well, but I connected with him to an unusual degree. He sits there, never breaking a smile (or any other facial expression for that matter), never playing as if he's trying at all, but at the same time he performs like a consummate professional, every movement conservative but fluid, and you can tell he loves what he's doing. I found the Spinanes' show genuinely captivating and will probably buy their album, admittedly as much because they both seem like incredibly sweet people as because of what I heard on Friday. :) Catch them if you have the chance and make up your own mind. Then there was Liz, who was clearly having a better night during her 21-song set than she was during the show Neal told us about. I have no trouble believing that she suffers from stage fright; for the first four songs or so she strummed half-heartedly and mumbled into the mike, and the mediocre sound mix did nothing to help her. But then something magical happened to her, the mix spontaneously improved, and the show took off. I decided during the show that she's a folk singer at heart. She's clearly uncomfortable with the trappings of performing "rock" music, although her band (particularly the bassist and drummer, who were both charismatic to the extreme) kept trying with some success to get her to loosen up. Every once in a while she would break into a wide smile and seem to forget where she was, and all of a sudden you were in the presence of greatness. This was usually when the lights were dimmed and she could perform more or less alone with fewer distractions. Consequently the most catchy, upbeat tunes on her album didn't come off well, while the ballad "Explain It To Me" was transformed from a take-it-or-leave-it album track into a gorgeous and haunting live performance, easily the highlight of the show. As Neal mentioned, the X-rated "Flower" (this time performed as an encore) was another hilarious high point, with Liz changing the song into a rapid-fire a-capella polka about blow-jobs and fucking. (Her drummer filled in on background vocals.) On the other hand, the final encore, "Girls! Girls! Girls!", was a mega-disaster. Liz and co. tried to do it with a single guitar and four-part harmony, but somebody screwed up and it quickly slipped into off-key chaos, which the more forgiving of us thought was pretty cool. :) Liz left the stage laughing in self-deprecation and the show was over. Survey sez: Liz and the Spinanes is a Good Show (I assume they're touring together in the long run since they're sharing a drum set), but don't expect to be converted by either if you don't know the albums, unless you're hopelessly soft-hearted like me. And if Somebody's Daughter is opening, I guess you'll want to show up late... Ethan P.S. I've had NIN's "Mr. Self Destruct" and/or "Hurt" going through my head rather consistently for the last 48 hours. Angelos? MichaelC? In Chicago, Central Standard Time, it's on at 3:30pm on ABC (ch 7). I'll be taping! For Chicagophiles who are interested in Holly Cole, I heard that she's supposed to be playing at Schubas this Friday night. I didn't know about it until tonight, and only because Chris said he saw a poster in the window of the Record Exchange. I'll be calling Schubas to double-check on this. It'll be a real treat to see and meet her again! I have plans for Saturday that could not be moved to Sunday, but if the weight of opinion is for a Saturday date and (most important of all) if that suits Neile & Jim, I guess I could make it on Saturday. I've not been to an Ecto gathering in Europe before. Is it likely to go on til very late? I'd been assuming something about four or five hours in duration. How long have previous Eurecto gathers gone on? >Thinking about it, Friday would be great, too.... I suspect Neile & Jim may be a bit jet-lagged on Friday. I think that is the day they arrive in Scotland, although the last I heard their flights hadn't been confirmed (any updates on that situation, Neile?). I haven't checked flight times from Stansted yet, but I might not be able to get up to Edinburgh early enough in the day to make a Friday gathering. -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** We tried to add it all up and got merely sunrise. *** *** Try putting that in a letter to someone in exile. *** ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 21 Mar 1994 12:40:06 +0000 From: S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk (Steve Fagg's Mac) Subject: Re: FTP available? It could still be on again sometime though, who can tell. However, if you did tape 120 Minutes tonight (well, okay, last night) then you'll probably be interested that before they showed Sarah McLachlan's US "Possession" video she was in a promo thing for MTV ("Hi, I'm Sarah McLachlan and you're watching 120 Minutes on MTV"). After the video they showed a short interview clip with her (in front of the same background). This is the whole thing: "I write from a pretty emotional point of view, umm... on a level that I think everybody can receive some empathy from, or some sense of understanding, or that someone has gone through the same sort of thing that they are going through, in the lyrics." I also really liked the very last video they showed. It was "Labour of Love" by a group (duo again?) named Frente! (Mammouth Records) and I *think* they said they were from Australia. Have they been mentioned here? I can't remember. Anyway, in this video there was a female vocalist and a guy playing an acoustic guitar, with something like a "recorder" here and there, and that's it. (Inside joke for Jeff W.: g&g&g!) I kept wanting to tap in my own percussion (I'm no drummer) although the one guitar really took care of that too. Check out the video if you have it. I need to listen to it again. Disclaimer: It's kinda weird I make these recommendations and then don't even have the money to try the album out myself, which would be much better to do before recommending anything. These are more like inquiries and are certainly no more than suggestions. I was also happy to see Machines of Loving Grace, from here in Tucson, get a profile/interview treatment. They're for "Pretty Good Year", and someone already posted info, so I won't repeat them. The Ltd Edition digipak has a sticker on it saying "Limited Edition Double CD" which would make you think that *MAYBE* there would be 2 CDs included, but in small print it says "contains disc 1. disc 2 available separately". The digipak has two trays though, so after you buy the non-limited edition PGY CD single, you can take the disk out of that, put it into the digipak, and throw the box it originally came in away. And of course, each CD single costs $11US, and contains two songs which you can't get anywhere else. That's an average of $5.50 per song. I bequeath Tori Amos, one boot to the head. This CD single nonsense has gone far enough. Someone should put out a couple of CD bootlegs which have ONLY her CD Single B-sides. Fill them up to their 78 minute capacity, charge $20 each for them, and they will sell like hotcakes. I'll buy them. My friends will all buy them. Tori doesn't deserve any royalties for those sales anyway, since she is shamelessly allowing her record company to pray on the poor soles who like her a lot, but have better things to spend their money on than her STUPID STUPID CD singles. Female lead singer with a great voice and it's fun kinda jazzy, swingy rocky music. You'd like it, Mike. And Kurt Swinghammer has a cut on the Joni Mitchell tribute album, but I can't remember which one. You'd also like Moxy Fruvous's _Bargainville_. Funny, mostly acapella music. What I really like but you might not: Sara Craig: has one E.P. She has a strong voice. Reminds me most of PJ Harvey but her music isn't as rough. She's as gutsy, though. Figgy Duff: Celtic folky stuff. Their first two albums are more folky, their second two more pop. Lead singer has a stunning pure voice. Leslie Spit Treeo: _Book of Rejection_ is wunnderful, hard rocking stuff. Don't much like _Don't Cry Too Hard_ though. I like the lead singer's Joplinesque voice. Spirit of the West: Usedta Celtic Rock, now they are more alternative with Celtic touches. _Labour Day_ and _Go Figure_ great. _Faithlift_, their new one is pretty good, too. Dalbello: of course, if you can find her. I've seen shops with _She_ and if you find _Whoman Foursays_ and don't want it, buy it for me to give to Michael Peskura. I've been trying to find it for him for years. Her music is must have for me. _Back to the Garden: A Tribute to Joni Mitchell_ has some wonderful covers of her songs, including ones by Martha & The Muffins, Sara Craig, the lead singer from the Leslie Spit Treeo, Spirit of the West. _Perfume Tree_: *great* ethereal band. Their stuff is hard to find, though, even in Vancouver where they're from. _Rose Chronicles_: Imagine what it would sound like if Sarah McLachlan played with a hard alternative band... _Dead and Gone to Heaven_ (the E.P.) is a little better than _Shiver_, the new full-length disc, but they're both good. _Lost and Profound_ is supposed to have a new one round about now. Countryish. I liked their first one. _Go van Gogh_: I really enjoyed their first pop-y disc. --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr. Their label, Zulu Records, does mail order if you can't find their stuff locally. They had an ad in Option a few months ago. Anyway, it was just this weekend that I ran across a copy of their latest release, the _Remote_ EP (a 47 minute "EP"). It has two new tracks, "Sea" and "Faint Magic" (two or three mixes of each, all but one pretty good IMHO), a remix of a track from their first album _Dust_, and another snippet or two. On the plus side, their sound is getting more experimental and tweaky (sort of a 4AD / Adrian Sherwood hybrid). On the down side (or at least, not an improvement), the female vocalist seems to be stuck in the exact same style as on _Dust_ -- drawn- out and high-pitched ("loopy ethereal?"). Despite the "I'm Straining To Be Very Angelic" style, she still manages to add something to the songs; it's just that she sounds like a one-trick pony compared to the rest of the group. But even with the slightly-too-predictable goth/4AD trappings (the cover artwork is a medieval-looking woodcut thingy with someone fol- lowing an angel's footsteps or something), the music is very good, with enough guitar and lots of weird production (but not just "weird for weird's sake") to keep it from slipping into the dreaded "yet another 4AD/Projekt/ goth-ambient" rut. Speaking of avoiding dreaded ruts, after all this time I finally listened to some His Name Is Alive -- the _King of Sweet_ CD. Yow, this is really great stuff! Now I'm kicking myself repeatedly for missing their live show a while back (whimper, sob). I know this isn't 4AD-L, but can anyone steer me towards which HNIA I should listen to next, or give me some nano- reviewettes?
