Date: Fri, 18 Mar 1994 12:15:54 +22293638 (CST) Is Peter Himmelman touring with Melissa Ferrick? Huh-huh that'd be cool huh-huh. I'm a big fan of Peter Himmelman and am surprised he hasn't been mentioned on ecto (oh wait, we generally focus on female singers... ). He's originally from St. Louis Park, Minnesota. (ahem, near where I'm from. ) He used to be with a band called Sussman Laurence that played in the cities and even was on Star Search. (don't hold it against me, okay?). Lessee.. other claims to fame are that he's married to Bob Dylan's daughter. (woo) But I know him for his intelligent lyrics and just plain good songwriting. In concert, he gives a great show. Albums are: Gematria, Synesthesia, From Strength to Strength, and the most recent Flown This Acid World. I recommend them all, but FStS and Syn. are faves of mine. The new one is good, too. When he played the song "Untitled" (from that album) in concert a couple of years ago.... it was incredible. I don't think anyone there had heard it before as ACID hadn't come out yet. It was met with a stunned silence, then got a standing ovation. Great way to end his first set, methinks... :) One of the most beautiful and meaningful songs I've heard in eons. Probably even more popular with SCHINDLERS LIST out. (go see the movie if you haven't. blatant plug. for a fine piece of filmmaking if for no other reason.) (the song in question is about anti-semiticism)... Anyhow, just had to plug one of my fave songwriters since he got a mention here... :) (and no, for those curious, I didn't drive up to Mpls for the Boiled in Lead show yesterday. still kicking myself...............) - Laurel Krahn - Box 88141 - Sioux Falls, SD - 57105-8141 - (605)336-4468 - - aka: lakrahn@inst.augie.edu - ar008@freenet.hsc.colorado.edu - /sethra - - "Have pity now, what's signal and what's noise?" - Emma Bull - ======================================================================== Date: 18 Mar 94 13:27:05 EST From: Mike Mendelson Subject: Re: Listen Up! at North Pier, Chgo ******************* LISTEN UP! ******************* The exciting new Chicago-based a cappella group, LISTEN UP!, will be performing at North Pier in downtown Chicago on Sunday, March 20, starting at 1pm. Oh, I think one song had a melody > (something about when we do the Double Dutch?). Lots of songs had some > rhythms, but in general, the music seemed uninspired, lacking punch, > energy, emotion. Interestingly, that was my first impression when I heard the album. Maybe it's because I'd been listening to Melissa Ferrick (who possesses "punch, energy, emotion" in spades) a lot at the time and for some reason expected Liz to sound similar. I was thinking out loud, "Jeez Liz, show some life! Get into it a bit!" She even reminded me a bit of grunge, with its self-conscious, self-protective attempt to turn nonchalance into art. It was only after a few listens that I dropped my preconceptions and realized that what Liz had to offer was just as real, honest, and often hilarious as her contemporaries...just that her natural style of presentation was somewhat more laid-back than most. Think Suzanne Vega with an attitude and you're pretty close. I love this album now, but I don't think she's somebody that you can really get into on first listen, especially if you have preconceptions about her as I guess we both did...so I'm not surprised that you didn't care much for the concert on that count at least. Bummer. > She didn't talk much and she wasn't a dynamic performer. She wasn't > aggresive or rowdy, and a song with a title like "Fuck and Run" turned out > to be lacking the kind of energy I expected it to have. Hey, that's my favorite song on _Exile in Boyland_ you're picking on. :) I find it hilarious, mostly because of the marvelously deadpan presentation it receives on the album (the deliberately amateurish double-tracked vocals don't hurt either). I was planning to go see Liz and the Spinanes in S.F. tonight, but I was just wondering if I was really up for yet another concert (what with Carter USM last night and Tori coming on Monday) when your post came through. Have to think about it even more carefully now, I guess. > She did do a very blue ditty with just guitar accompaniment that had one > of the cleanest sounds and bluest lyrics. Perhaps some of the > ladies recall the one about your overwhelming desire to give blow jobs by > the hours and fuck someone til there dick was blue. That song actually was > one of the most captivating of the evening. Ah, that would be "Flower." Another fun little ditty. I was actually wondering if she would do that live, since on the album it's somewhat dependent on the interplay between her monotonic singing in front and her repeated soprano refrain in the background. > In empathy to someone, I then found my car was broken into while I was in > the show. That someone would be me, but it sounds like you got f*cked over a lot worse than I did. I hope you're insured for theft at least. (I wasn't...I'm not going to be able to afford a new stereo for quite some time, and it may well drive me nuts.) Ectophiles, protect your musical stuff. You probably get more out of it and depend on it more than many people you know, but the jerks who are looking for somebody to rip off don't know that and wouldn't care if they did. :( Ethan ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 18 Mar 94 12:16:30 PST From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: no more than Phair Some follow-up comments to the Liz Phair show. I listened to my tape of the show, and for the first time in my very brief taping career, enjoyed it more than the show. I had planned to dump it but will keep it around for a while (indefinitely) now. I've noticed before that whatever filtering happens through the mic tends to remove a lot of distortion and crud from a show. Nice bonus. Review in todays paper of the show largely shared my sentiments. They said that the show would in no way convert the unconverted, that Liz is a new and still awkward performer, but that there were some moments in the show that were exciting and promising (I didn't really notice many of those). They also said that in Options magazine Liz claims she is not much of a performer and wouldn't see her own show. Talked about how Liz brilliant album sprang fully formed from her head like Aphrodite from Zeus, and that all the hype came from that, not performing. I am still interested in buying her album, but wouldn't send anyone running to the concert. >> Think Suzanne Vega with an attitude and you're pretty close. By the way, Suzanne Vega in concert years ago was much, much better. I imagine the deadpan presentation in "Fuck and Run" is probably more entertaining when you can understand the lyrics. Ethan writes: >>Ah, that would be "Flower." Another fun little ditty. I was actually >>wondering if she would do that live, since on the album it's somewhat >>dependent on the interplay between her monotonic singing in front and her >>repeated soprano refrain in the background. "Flower" was amusing, and more playful than other things she did. There was a weird vocal effect that sounded like either heavy reverb or some wierd double tracking. Since we didn't get the Spinanes with Phair, they will be here next week. Did anyone catch them recently? Should I go? Thanks for the sympathies on my car theft. I carry pretty hefty insurance, which seems annoying most of the time, but not right now. Sorry you can't replace your stuff Ethan. Real bummer. She may or may not be including the word "here" at the end; it's sort of slurred, so I've never been entirely sure if she's saying "I'll be, but I'll be ecto" or "I'll be here, but I'll be ecto." The kite has been my spring break project, consuming virtually all of my time since last Saturday. The kite was built for the 27th annual Smithsonian Kite Festival, which will be held on the western grounds of the Washington Monument next Saturday (raindate is sunday). I hope to win an award with the kite. Many of you have seen scans of the original "EctoForm" which ecto commissioned and I built as part of the '92 HBP. The new kite is completely different. The ecto graphic appears on a 36" square of white fabric. The graphic is framed with a 1" gray border. Below this in 800 point type, times italic, is the word "ecto". Strung below the kite is a tail 27" wide and a bit over 30' long. It looks absolutely amazing in the air, if I do say so myself (and I must, because I'm the only to have seen it fly, other than some tourists who wandered by...) With any luck, I'll be able to take some pictures of the kite this weekend. Whenever I get the pictures, I'll scan them and send 'em to the archives. I don't know if Happy ever flies (or has ever flown) her kite. This one should see a lot of air time, and maybe even draw some interest. Jeff |Jeffrey C.
