Gia and Gary also skate together in the ICE THEATER OF NEW YORK which given your selections on music, I think you would enjoy a great deal. On the boring music at most exhibitions. I can't agree with you more. Not only is most of the music dull, everyone skates to the same thing. I think I've seen enough people skate to Wind Beneath my Wings to last me a life time. I'm hoping that one day soon Elvis Stojko will skate to some music from his *real* name sake-Elvis Costello. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Any of you New York folks know anything about this Ice Theater?? Bob Morrow wrote: >"ECTO" comes from the Greek word "EKTO" = "outside" >Its antonym is "ENDO" = "inside" Almost but not quite. The greek work for outside is exo (substitute x by a xi, and o by an omega) or ektOs (which can also mean without). What you said would be correct if you had written ecto-, and endo- as these two are never used like that without having another word attached to them, like the example you gave with -derm (from derma which means skin). Your interpretation for ecto, is great, only it's wrong, and it actually makes more sense for the Eleftheria Arvanitaki song 'Meno Ektos' which many of you have heard on the first HGP, whose title means I stay outside. Ectoplasm comes from Ecto and Plasm (which means being or plasma in the electromagnetic sense, but I doubt that's what Happy intended :-)), and this is why the word is associated with ghosts. So, Jeffy is right. Another meaning of ecto, is of course sixth. As in number 6. But this doesn't make sense. 'I'll be here, I'll be sixth'. Nope. Back to your regularly scheduled cross-posting :-) [This is a JOKE!] Angelos ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 18 Mar 94 04:58:31 GMT From: Guy.Larri@armltd.co.uk (Guy Larri) Subject: How to burst the digest with vm within emacs I'm using vm running within gnu emacs as my mail reader, and I can't get it to burst the ecto digest into seperate messages properly. The last stop on the tour was last Sunday evening at the Fox Theater in Boulder CO, and I was there. The Fox Theater is a very small theater, about 250-300 seats, and thus quite an intimate atmosphere, a perfect setting for Jane's show. If you've been paying attention, you know the basics of the show, as Jane told a long story, played videos, played some songs, and as part of her first (and only) encore, answered questions from the audience. The story was a typical Siberrian piece, centered on a disastrous one night stand, continually shifting place, time, tone, and even subject. It was a wild ride, and I hope that it's the same one Woj recorded so that I can listen to it a bit more closely. The videos were "Bird in the Gravel" and "An Angel Stepped Down (and Slowly Looked Around)" plus a trailer for "Love Is Everything". The videos have to be seen to be believed, though they only added to the mystery of the songs rather than illuminated them. (I'm still trying to just sort out the myriad voices in "An Angel Stepped Down"). Seeing "Bird in the Gravel" was serendipitous for me. I had never liked it for the longest time, but I listened to _The Walking_ just the day before, and it finally clicked for me -- a wonderful song. The video only reinforced that. Jane explained the songs and videos a bit before showing them, and I was happy to find out I was on the right track for both of them. As for the trailer for "Love Is Everything", it is absolutely hilarious, very Pythonesque. Apparently on earlier stops, she also played the video for "Temple", but it got lost somewhere on the tour. Musically, Jane accompanied herself either on guitar or piano or sang accompanied by a local pianist. My memory is horrid, but I think she sang three unreleased songs, plus "Love Is Everything", "The Beginning of Time", a wonderfully emotional rendition of "The Vigil", and possibly one from an earlier album. She also started "Calling All Angels", but apparently she and the pianist couldn't get into sync. So instead, he played some old piano standard, while she sang lyrics completely off the top of her head. She did it so well, that if it weren't for the fact that she wove in some of the earlier events of the concert, I would have sworn it was practiced. The question and answer period got off to an odd start. The first question was "What planet are you from?". (I couldn't help but think "Welcome to Boulder, Jane!" (However, this was not your typical Boulder crowd, fewer gay couples, fewer yuppies, and fewer (How should I put this?) "alternative" people than usual)). She danced around that question, like she did most of the questions. Her most detailed and heartfelt response was a complaint about multimedia, electronic communications, and virtual reality, mainly how they increase the emotional distance between people. The crowd's response was mixed, though I personally don't disagree with her. Yet the odd part was that this was part of the answer to the question, "What music do you listen to?" Jane's mind doesn't work in straight lines -- for which I'm thankful. :) While I thoroughly enjoyed the evening, I left mildly disappointed. I didn't feel very well that evening and had trouble concentrating and relaxing. Also, the show was plagued with problems. The video machine sound didn't work at first. Jane was feeling tipsy from the altitude (5300ft/3300m) and probably road-weariness. I already mentioned the "Calling All Angels" problem. Thus the show came to a dead halt several times and felt quite discontinuous and makeshift. Yet Jane handled the problems with aplomb and wild humor. Hoping for a pumpkin on my back stoop, I remain ...
