Well, as Kathy said, we went to get Sarah tickets this morning. After struggling with my alarm clock for about 40 minutes, I finally got up at some ungodly hour that I am trying hard to forget exists. Being my usual afraid-to-be-late-to-anything self, I got out of here at 8:20am, allowing 10 minutes to walk to Kathleen's. She lives 2 buildings away, so at 8:21am, I'm standing in front of her building twiddling my thumbs. After getting a newspaper and falling in love with Chicago all over again, I finally met Kathleen. It only took us two months of living a block away from each other to meet! We finally got to the Vic at about 9:15am, 45 min. before the tickets were supposed to go on sale. We were the only people in line, and feeling very foolish for worrying about Sarah tickets selling out. Finally the ticket-seller guy walks up. "Hmm...Weren't you here last week?" he says to me. "Yeah, Tori tickets," I responded foolishly. I think the other person in line (not Kathleen) put it best: "That's pathetic." Only two concerts have I bought tickets for in Chicago, and this guy remembers me! I hear they've ordered a commemmorative Valerie plaque for the box office, one that says "Parking for Valerie Nozick only." But then again, at least a plaque would guarantee me first in line seats for the next Tori show. :-) Ten minutes later he comes out again: "Sorry. Tickets aren't going on sale today because Blah blah blah didn't get the paperwork to blah blah blah in time blah blah blah." Getting a serious case of the blahs, all I could do was laugh. I mean, last week for Tori, the tickets didn't go on sale until 2 hours later. Now they aren't going on sale until probably next week. Next time I try for tickets, they probably won't go on sale until the next year! But the mornign wasn't a waste. I finally got to meet Kathy, proving once again that ecto people are really wonderful and interesting. And at least I got to avoid studying for an hour. ==> valerie (ye olde Vic standby) ============================================================================ iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu "Patience, Iago. Besides, we've already got musicians on the list, albeit ones that we've only heard on HGP tapes. I'd hate to think that ecto had an unwritten "unsigned musicians only" rule. :-) And I've never heard anyone be hateful about a musician's work (well, maybe Somebody's Daughter), so if the musician were willing to listen to honest but not hateful opinions, s/he could only benefit, don't you think? -- Emily (feeling scattered 'cause I haven't had any coffee yet today) ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 5 Mar 1994 12:26:05 -0800 (PST) From: Ectophiles Guide Subject: Musicians on ecto Because this discussion is starting to sound serious, I guess I should go on record officially about this (since I'm the one who started it by objecting to Melissa Ferrick's possible presence on ecto). I'm not going to ask Jessica to start checking the credentials of anyone who requests access to the list. I'm sure she doesn't want to do it anymore than I want to ask her to. No, I just feel guilty because I kinda sorta like Melissa Ferrick's album but it also kinda drives me up the wall. It's been in and out of my "sell it off" pile since I bought it. I think it's because I'm of two minds about her work that the idea of having her here makes me a little nervous--but this is my problem and not hers and not anyone else's--and certainly not Jessica's. The only people I would want to restruct from the list are the kinds who send those totally obnoxious unsubscribing messages--and they seem to be doing just fine at keeping themselves off the list. In the meantime, hey folks, ecto is a really special list and I've made some incredible friends from it and learned about a lot of equally incredible music from it. I think it's a "strong" list, too--I think it would take a lot to change it from its fuzzy blue feel, because so many people (you know who you are) have made a huge investment of their time and affection to create and continue that. This really is a special place, and I think it would take a lot to change it. *Hugs* to you all. The opening act was some unknown shoe-gazing band called Moose, and they were terrible! But all was forgiven when Cocteau Twins finally stepped foot on stage. The crowd went nuts, as people yelled things like "I love you Liz!" and inexplicably "Tonya Harding." Liz Fraser was obviously touched but also EXTREMELY shy. Every time the crowd erupted in applause after a song or yelled things to her, she would look down and away and mumble "Oh, God." It was very endearing. The song selection spanned almost their entire career. I don't remember everything they did (Why don't I ever write down song titles like I always intend to?), but the ones I do remember off-hand (and not in order) are: Blue Bell Knoll Carolyn's Fingers Aikea-Guinea Iceblink Luck Heaven or Las Vegas Road, river and rail I wear your ring Evangeline Bluebeard Whales Tails Know who you are at every age Theft, and wandering around lost One thing I did notice was that Liz was purposely obscuring song lyrics and simply singing whatever she felt. Especially on songs like Evangeline and Bluebeard which have clearly discernible lyrics, she would take the words you expected to hear and totally turn them on their head as only she can do. Over all, I was very pleased with the concert simply because I was seeing Cocteau Twins for the first time. But even if that hadn't been the case, it was still an enjoyable concert with a very receptive audience, resulting in 2 encores and demands for a third. Go see them if you can (and skip Moose)! --- Stuart __________________________________________________________________________ Stuart Myerburg People always ask, "Are they lovers or Emory Univ. An interesting thing about Melissa Ferrick: the first I heard of her music was on a free compilation of Atlantic artists entitled _14 Twitchy Songs of Anger and Nihilistic Ennui_ or something like that. Subject: Sarah McLachlan, Goddess... Hi everybody! Well, I've been meaning to try and write some sort of review about the Sarah McLachlan religious experience, er, concert last Wednesday, but I haven't had the time until now. I'm not that great at describing music (sorry, I'm an electrical engineering/computer option major; I'd much rather make someone listen to my music than try to describe it), but I had to write something... I drove down from Laramie, WY, and picked up Doug Burks in Fort Collins, CO. It was great to finally meet someone from Ecto, and I scored two tapes of Happy Rhodes live off of him. *aaaigh!* I won't die _happy_ [pun intended] unless I see her at least once in my humble life. But I'm digressing... The Ogden Theater was really small; the capacity was maybe 400-500 people, tops. Lots and lots of Sarah paraphenalia, and they accept MC/Visa. (Now I know not to bring credit cards with me to concerts anymore) Total damage: $55. (One shirt: $20, one tour book: $25, and one poster: $5) The tour books are expensive but incredibly beautiful; hard bound with an embossed gilt (am I spelling this stuff right?) title, with lots of fold-out pictures... The opening act was The Devlins; I'm not the greatest at trying to describe music but I guess they could be described as Irish modern rock. I remember that one of the songs seemed to borrow to bass synth from U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name", and on the song that everyone broke out dancing to, the lead singer sounded kinda like Paul Simon during his "You Can Call Me Al" phase. I feel bad writing this, though, because they were pretty good; it's just that those two songs gave me a major case of deja vu. I give them a thumbs up... Now on to our heroine, Sarah. *sigh* She opened up the set with a solo acoustic version of "Plenty" that was heavenly. Halfway through the song, her backing band kicked in, and it was wild. The whole show was wonderful; many of the songs seemed to be extensively re-arranged. The backing band was incredible; it seemed that every band member played two or three different instruments, and they played them exceedingly well. As far as Sarah went, she seemed ...dreamy. It was as if she was only there on one level, and the rest of her was caught up in a dream as she danced onstage. Eventually she came back from wherever it was she had been, and she just kinda glowed. Wonderful personality, effortless heavenly vocals... wow! I think she did every song off of _FTE_ except "Elsewhere" (I rememeber she didn't do that one because it was my boss Tamara's favorite song) The version she did off "Possession" sounded odd to me; it sounded kinda like EMF ala "Unbelieveable". It was the percussion, I think... I think my favorite song of the evening was "Vox", which was medleyed into something else which I can't recall. The acapella version she and two other band memebers did of "Ice Cream" was really sweet as well... After the show, I had to track down Tamara; we were on the hunt for an Arista rep she had met over the phone. We were victorious, and Tamara, her husband and I got to wait up in the balcony while they kicked everyone else out for an after-show party. (For some reason Doug didn't want to come up... *shrug*) While we were recovering from the concert, the Arista rep handed out some posters of _FTE_ to anyone who wanted one, and out of the blue Sarah walked up into the balcony area! There were a couple of groups of us record- store types hanging out up there, and we were all hesitant of approaching her, not wanting to look like groupies. I finally gave in to the impulse (funny what 4 hours sleep, a 2.5 hour drive home with two labs an exam the next day can do to you) and walked up. She was really sweet, and also really short! (what is it with my favorite female vocalists? KaTe, Happy... they're also short, I've heard) She also had strong arms; you could see some definite muscle definition a la "cuts". I remember that really surprised me for some reason. I'm proud to say that I managed to refrain from falling to my knees and kissing her feet... *giggle* Told her I loved her show ("Thank you very much!"), and asked if she could autograph a poster for my girlfriend, Janet, who couldn't make it, as she (a) wasn't old enough yet for the 21 + show, and (b) who had four(!!) midterms that day, the last one of which was from 7-9pm. She signed it, "Janet - Hope you pass with flying colors! Peace, Sarah McLachlan" Then I had her sign my tour book, which made me feel bad for Janet; she signed my book "Kevin - Peace, Love, and Ecstasy to you! (Peace symbol) Sarah McLachlan" I then wished her a wonderful tour and a good night, and left, absolutely glowing with happiness for the rest of the night. Wonderful night indeed... Well, I hope I haven't bored anyone to sleep yet; but I think I'm going to finally try and catch up on some sleep now. Goodnight all! smudge ======================================================================== Date: Sun Mar 06 15:32:40 1994 From: Ross.Alford@jcu.edu.au Subject: Jane Siberry album ranking debate... G'day, all I've been lurking on this list for a few weeks, but couldn't resist getting my $A0.02 in on this one. I ended up on ecto by a route that goes (approximately) Laurie Anderson -->KT -->Jane -->HR. The first, and until recently only, Jane CD I acquired was the re-release of her first album--Jane Siberry. The one with Marco Polo, This Girl I know, The Sky is so Blue, etc. It took a couple of listens, but I was converted--some of the things she did on that one were fantastic, and I really enjoy the style--relatively simple underlying music, with a vaguely folk feel, but fairly sophisticated post-processing. Anyway, the second Jane I got was WIWaB. If that had been the first, I might not have continued. After listening to is a number of times, there are some very nice pieces, but Sweet Incarnidine dominates it greatly, and sounds (to quote some reviewer) like a monumental piece of self- indulgence. BTW, if you object enormously to 'country-like' sounds, what about Calling All Angels? Fortunately, I was not deterred, and acquired BbtB--overall, I like that better than WIWaB, particularly Something About Trains, ERMoMD, and several others. I'm looking forward to getting some more, whenever they turn up in the mail. I get this feeling I've wandered too much above, but in conclusion--Jane seems to have a very genre-inclusive style, and worrying too much about a single work is overdoing it. A separate issue, I have a possibly dumb question. Last week, I received Equipoise directly from AG. They sent an extra copy of the CD insert, and there was a very cute little note on the back of the CD about the quality of the original insert, saying that you could get a replacement. I've looked at them both side-by-side and can't tell the difference, except that the replacement is glossier. What's the story? Cheers, Ross ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 6 Mar 94 09:05:37 -0600 From: iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu Subject: Re: Jane Siberry album ranking debate... Ross.Alford said: >BTW, if you object enormously to 'country-like' sounds, >what about Calling All Angels? As the person who so vehemently hates BbtB, I'll respond. It isn't the country-like sounds that I hate. I love a lot of progressive country (defined as stuff that isn't the typical 'I went to the store to buy a gun, now I'm gonna go out and kill for fun.' or 'My girlfriend walked out on me last night, after we had ourselves a great big fight'), but BbtB is simply an uninspired album. It does not take country anywhere interesting. In fact, sometimes it sounds like Jane is trying so hard to do something with country that it ends up sounding awful ('Bound by the Bee-uu-ty' for example). Compare BbtB to someone like Mary Chapin Carpenter and it just pales. >I get this feeling I've wandered too much above, but in conclusion--Jane >seems to have a very genre-inclusive style, and worrying too much about >a single work is overdoing it. I don't worry too much about BbtB. The rest of Jane's opus is next to godlike (and right below Kate, Happy and Tori) in my estimation, and I usually forget about BbtB being a Jane album. Give WIWaB some time. It's an album that you have to adjust to, but is really brilliant. Read the lyrics, because they are the strongest part, IMHO. Relax, put on some headphones, and let the music take you away. ==> valerie who thinks she'll go listen to WIWaB again... ============================================================================ iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu "Patience, Iago.
