I just wanted to mention that it appears that I will soon be working on a video for Suddenly, Tammy. As the band has been mentioned oftimes here on ecto, I thought it would be worth posting. Though they are in the process of working on a new album, the Record Company gave them the hefty sum of Five Thousand Dollars to make a video from the first album. I'll post the song when I find out, assuming this does come to pass. Should be fun. I also wanted to aske if any of the local/nearby/distant ectophiles were planning on going to Sarah's concert later in March, at the Keswick. Connell The bio for Mitch Elrod's Swim Team claims that Mitch has fashioned a neo-avant-pop or sorts, refined it over the years and sings it like David Byrne. Truth is, Elrod's music functions more like the Talking Heads with the nervous grooves eliminated and he sings like a waterlogged Donald Fagen. On _The Muse of Intent_, his band, The Swim Team, bounces through twelve jittery, angular pop songs. There are a few hooks, even fewer melodies and the lyric sheet reads like a collision between e.e. cummings and a physics book. On "The Rainbow at the End of the Tunnel," he muses about "the field of time" over a simple bass pulse and two ridiculously mismatched guitar parts. "Wake'em Down" has Elrod doing his Marc Cohn impression: "Just a good ol' boy ain't good enough," he sings, "the road to hell is paved with fluff." Sure it is. With music this genre, who cares? Lines like, "we'll laugh in the river of mutability/And drive in the great lakes of lucidity" and, "Every point on this lifeline in time/Connects like these raindrops to an equatorial laugh," make me start to wonder if there was going to be a final exam. I find it nearly impossible to describe what I was hearing. The title track has some cute drum rolls, "All The Ways-Land" has a rustic feel and blends its acoustic guitar with an electric solo (of sorts) and "Every Life," a sincere ballad about us humans being nasty to each other, is just about as featureless. Mitch Elrod and his crew are probably nice guys, but that doesn't make _The Muse of Intent_ less painful to listen to. It was a task getting through and it depressed me--not the content, the sad spectacle of people wasting time. Sorry. ----- woj again. hmmm. i'm curious now to hear for myself this "sad spectacle" which so soured senor connell's day. what do those who have gotten _the muse of intent_ think of it? also in the splatter effect, i noticed an advertisment for _velvet circus_, a compilation featuring "the many talented women in the eclectic hoboken scene." kate jacobs, who has been mentioned here before is on there as are the marys, who haven't been mentioned here before, a magnificent acoustic act whom i like lots and lots (they wrote the wonderful song, "the day roy orbison died" which can be found on a single which is probably out of print by now). it's a cassette only release and can be purchsed by sending a check or money order for $12 to velvet circus/blackwater books 514 washington street hoboken, nj 07030 a phone number is also listed: 201/656-3438. i assume that checks and m.o.'s should be made out to velvet circus, but i dunno for sure. looks interesting to me... i also received the first four ani difranco cds in the mail this afternoon. the turnaround time was incredible - i mailed the check off to them last wednesday! if you like acoustic music with a touch of miltant feminism (though it's not womyn's music by any stretch of the imagination), this is the place to look. any of her five albums (ani difranco, not so soft, imperfectly, puddle dive and like i said) can be ordered from righteous records 429 richmond ave buffalo, ny 14222 for $10/$15 postpaid for tapes/cds. new york residents add sales tax. canadians pay $12/$18 in that funny money from north o'the border. ;) +woj ======================================================================== Subject: Re: the muse of intent and other stories Date: Mon, 28 Feb 94 23:04:58 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu woj writes: [reprint of review] My. I rather like it. There's no question that it's weird. Quite weird. Mitch's lyrics are somewhere between extremely literate, stream-of-consciousness-surreal, and Elizabeth-Frazer-"These-words-sound- good-together-what-do-you-mean-they-have-to-make-sense." The music jumps from funk to folk with electric pop. As the reviewer noted, it's very difficult to describe. But I definitely disagree that the music is "featureless." In fact, I find that to be rather absurd. There aren't a lot of pop hooks here; the music needs time to sink in. I suspect that the reviewer gave it one listen and decided to trash it. I had a fairly negative reaction the first time through, but I recognized enough glittery stuff to know that I would need to give it a few listens to get used to it. _The Muse of Intent_ is definitely not for everyone. But I shudder at the implication that it is for no one. Incidentally, I've done some nice full-color scans of Happy's painting from the cover. With any luck, they'll make it to the archives in not-too-long. And if I've got that kind of stuff, gee, I"d feel obligated to go to the show, and I'd just have to hang around and chat. So force me to do what I should be doing anyway, send me tidbits for Melissa F. (btw, I've never heard any of her stuff. What's she like?) I had never heard her, anyway NPR radio in Detroit just played a few songs by MMO. One from the out of print "Miss America" and another from a new 2-record CD entitled " Darnit, Poems by Paul Haynes(sp)". She is a featured vocalist along w/Jack Bruce, Robert Whyit(sp) and a few others. Paul Haynes is a poet who wrote a libretto entitled "Escalator Over The Hill" back in the 60's I believe. Just some info to pass along to those who were wonderin whats new w/MMO. ____________________________________ Don Gibson gibsond@aa.wl.com Ann Arbor, MI USA refm on irc ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
