WXPN Error Hello, Flairck & Camper Vantiquities CVB ======================================================================== Subject: Re: long shot Date: Sat, 27 Mar 93 12:50:58 EST From: Angelos Kyrlidis Well, I decided to splurge and try out the new Einsturzende Neubauten last night (I also got the new Daniel Lanois but haven't listened to it yet). And I am mostly impressed! It is not at all what I expected to hear, which was noise and dissonant screaming. _Tabula Rasa_ is rather melodious at times, and highly rhythmic. There are some dissonant screaming moments, (probably to remind old fans what they are listening to) but there is a lot of singing and even female vocals!! (two tracks from this album were written for La La La Human Steps, one of which is called Blume (flower) and is very ethereal, almost like a Julee Cruise song-yes, that's the one with Anita Lane speaking/singing). There are also moments with middle eastern flavours that reminded me of Passion. Sort of like a cross between Zamia Lehmanni era SPK with Dead can Dance, which I guess is an insult to this band that apparently has a decade or more of history behind it. But that's what it sounds like to my ears, and I like it. I really do. I'm reminded, though, of something someone posted elsewhere (asar?): if you're at the point of suicide, you might as well pick up and go on an adventure, since you'd be leaving everything behind anyway. I thought of this again last week, when I was near rock bottom due to 7 months of un- or under-employment and the absolutely dry job market (Any tech writers planning to come to Austin: Bad idea -- there's too many out here for the number of potential jobs already), and decided that relocating would actually be a good idea, though I would have scoffed at it before, so I'm looking to head to the Bay Area soon... Anyway, to help get me out of it, I put together a tape to listen to to moderate the depression somewhat, which I labeled (based on the obvious influence) *HUGMUSIC*: Whitney Houston I Will Always Love You Mariah Carey I'll Be There Tori Amos Smells Like Teen Spirit Kate Bush Candle in the Wind Queensryche Silent Lucidity Prince/Sheena Easton The Arms of Orion Kris McKay The Wild Places Bruce Springsteen Because the Night The Cure Lovesong Clannad Harry's Game Enya Exile (Ob)Happy Rhodes Feed the Fire Peter Gabriel Blood of Eden Daniel Lanois The Maker Thomas Dolby Airwaves Sinead O'Connor Nothing Compares 2 U George Michael They Won't Go When I Go Julee Cruise Falling Martika Love... Thy Will Be Done BTW, I picked The Story's "Grace in Gravity" yesterday, based on recommendations here; it (and InTuaNua's "The Long Acre" and Angela Bofill's "Angie") were on a used CD rack for $2 apiece, so I snarfed them. ======================================================================== Date: 27 Mar 1993 15:34:59 -0500 (EST) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: Einsturzende Neubauten Hi! Does anybody know any good record shops (CD) in London? I have been to the big ones, Tower, Virgin and HMV. Some good second hand shops with a good selection of ecto like music would be ideal. I have not yet taken the trouble to order any of Happy's album but if I have any money left after visiting England I will order all the albums. Does anybody have any idea about the postage cost to Sweden? I suppose it should be about the same as to Denmark and I remember reading a mail from a person in Denmark that recently had ordered the CDs. I recently bought Martha and the Muffins' Modern Lullaby after seeing a recommendation in this list. The first four track was very good but after that there was a distortion in the sound. I friend said it sounded as a failing Dolby C noise reduction. Is this a known problem? It says "manufactured" under license by Intrepid Records" on the back side. Tommy Persson ! A finger! Yowza! Greetings Mr. and Mrs. Ecto, and all the ships at sea! What an amazing day! First off, a hearty hello to all the ectophiles I met in person today: Bob Brown, Anthony, Steve, lurker Michelle, and any others I've forgotten in all the excitement. We all had a nice chat with Happy, Kevin, and Susanne at 21st Century Sound in Bryn Mawr. They were so open and real, it was just wonderful! It was a lot like my silly doggerel, in that I presented Susanne with ecto digests (modem hookup in two weeks!), schmoozed a lot with Kevin, and Happy was indeed very busy. There was quite an excellent turnout! I'm too flushed with it all now to write, but I just wanted to get this off. I'll write more later! Vickie, you have quite a friend in Happy! We spoke of you a bit, and of Tori (Happy saw her in Albany). On a personal note, there has been a discussion of suicide here lately - my feelings are like those of Ed, from Northern Exposure, who comments that one should not go where one is not invited! Everybody, take care. Will write soon! Bob L. PS I hope Bob Brown connects soon! (hee hee) :) ======================================================================== Date: 27 Mar 1993 20:56:38 -0500 (EST) From: ROBNPAM@delphi.com Subject: WXPN Error531 Hi everybody, I've been on Ecto for a month or so, but this is my first post. May I start with a big public thank-you to Meredith for introducing me to Happy's music? Thought so. :) I got all six of her CDs shortly after getting a sampler tape from Meredith, and have since made my own samplers for three friends from another computer network. Since then, I've been running around Albany buying the CDs for those who can't find them in their own area! Anyway, the purpose of this note was to let you all know about a mistake I heard about that was made by a WXPN DJ. This information came to me from someone on Prodigy. He said one of the WXPN DJs, Michaela, recently played "Runners" and then afterwards she stated that the backing vocals on the song were done by none other than...Kate Bush. :( To make matters worse, it took me a couple of posts before I convinced this fellow that Michaela had made an error. Meredith thought this would be of interest to this list, so there ya go! Hope someone can straighten it out...it's unfortunate when that kind of misinformation starts flying around. Pamela in Albany, NY ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 27 Mar 93 23:24:06 EST From: mojzes@monet.rutgers.edu (brni) hi all, i wonder if this will get thru, since our mailer has been totally screwed up for the past few weeks... i dropped in at 21st century sound today. it was cool that so many people were into happy's music. unfortunately, i had no idea who was a net person and who wasn't, so i didn't end up hooking up with anyone. :(. its always kinda nice to know what people look like when you read their stuff. ah well. its also kinda interesting not to know... happy was very cool. i haven't done a lot of "shmoozing with the stars" so i didn't really know what to say, but i did get some pictures. hopefully they'll turn out (the lighting was less than ideal, and i don't yet have a florescent filter). picked up ecto. *wow* i like it much better than equipoise, and i like equipoise quite a lot. unfortunately they didn't have warpaint (suzanne was rather, uh, annoyed at that, it seemed). anyway, it IS much sparser than equipoise ("This one is sort of demo-quality," said happy) but i think that that is what i like about it. all the fancy trappings are missing, leaving one with a direct confrontation with the core of what makes her music important. of course, that's just a first impression. in other news: i went to a movie today. first one i've been to since _naked lunch_ came out (over a year?). _sommersby_ was sickeningly romantic, and i really liked it a lot anyway. *i* could be an actor, if i got to do scenes with jodie foster... :) well, enuf for tonight. c ya later brni ======================================================================== Date: 27 Mar 93 23:45:36 EST From: Bob Brown <74756.1557@compuserve.com> Subject: a day in the life No joke -- that was indeed Happy! I took along my Compaq notebook and Happy typed in that message for all of you right there in 21st Century Sound. Actually, before she typed it in I let her browse through some recent posts so that she could get an idea about the happenings here. She commented that she would find it interesting to be a lurker here :-) We had a real nice visit with Happy, Kevin, Suzanne et al. I'll recap some of the conversation that I can remember (which ranged from Happy's interest in UFO's to Happy's popularity in Spain and Italy) sometime tomorrow... I'm fighting a dooosey of a headache right now. She will be on WYSP 94 FM *live* tomorrow evening 3/28 at 8 PM. She looked wonderful and was in great spirits laughing, smiling, and joking about. Wish you all could have been there. Tommy, I hope you get the information you're looking for (which should also come to me so I can put it in the FAQ) and Pamela, thanks for the misinformation story. I'm suprised that a WXPN, of all places, DJ should believe that Kate did backing vocals. (Reminds me of a visit to a record store a couple of weeks ago. The fella behind the counter had heard that Kate had died of cancer! It took quite a bit of "credential throwing" for me to get him to believe that I knew what I was talking about when I said that she was alive and well. How do these things get started? Geez!) (Reminds me that this guy was playing a group I'd never heard, or even heard of, before, but the music was kinda cool and the lead vocalist sounded very familiar. It was his own personal tape and I wrote down the information. It was a group called "Flairck" and the album was called _Slight of Hand_. I saw some names I recognized in the credits. The lead singer is Maggie Reilly, who sang Mike Oldfield's song "To France" that I played on my second SIG. It was produced by Mike Batt, though off the top of my head I can't rememeber what he's done other than a piece I recorded years ago from Night Flight. One of the musicians was Erik Visser, who I assume is the same Erik Visser who wrote most of Mary Coughlin's songs. So, does anyone, especially in the Nordic areas because he said that the band was from Sweden, know anything about this band Flairck?) I too went into a record store yesterday and came out with yet another Yma Sumac CD. This one is a live concert, recorded in 1961 in Russia. I haven't listened to it yet. Re: Yes Virginia, David Lowry *was* in a band before Cracker. The other thing I got had me hopping up and down with glee. It's not something I would highly recommend to Ectophiles, but it made me very pleased. It's _Camper Vantiquities_ by Camper Van Beethoven. It consists of the _Vampire Can Mating Oven_ EP, which has never been released on CD before, plus a bunch of unreleased tracks. I'm a happy happy Camper fan! (I've been a CVB fan for years, but I learned my lesson about trying to push them on to other people. Chris *HATES* them, for instance. I did try to get Jorn to listen to them the other night, being as how he's such a huge WEEN fan. He "wasn't impressed" which might have led to an argument about why is *is* "so impressed" by the filthy-mouthed boys of WEEN, except that I was a good little girl and kept my mouth shut. It's just another in a long line of examples of why I shouldn't ever try to get anyone into Camper, which is definitely an "love 'em or hate 'em" band. However, I did want to pass along the info about this album for any other CVB fans who might not know about it.) Camper Vantiquities-Camper Van Beethoven IRS 0777 7 13211 22 1. We Eat Your Children (1986) never released, CVB's answer to "We Are The World" 13. Six More Miles To The Graveyard (1987) from VCMO cassette-only, cover of a Hank Williams song 14. Ice Cream Everyday (1987) from Vampire Can Mating Oven, Iscream, Youscream, Weallscream... 15. Processional (1986) from Vampire Can Mating Oven, an instrumental 16. Photograph (1987) from Vamire Can Mating Oven, cover of the Ringo Starr song I love this! It's just wonderful and I'm so glad I found it! The thing that makes me happiest, other than the songs themselves, is that my very favorite member of CVB, Jonathan Segal, is on all the tracks. He left the band before _Key Lime Pie_ was released because he didn't want to be on a major label. The band just wasn't the same after he left, and it must have had an impact on the band too, because CVB broke up after the release of _KLP_, the only album the band made after Jonathan left. I heard that David and what's her name (the female violin player they hired to replace Jonathan) got involved and David's ego got too big, but I really think the pressure of all the old fans asking "what happened to Jonathan?" just got to be too much! :-) Anyway, all CVB fans should all be delighted by this album. Anyone else-BeWare! :-).
