Gorgeous. I totally agree! I enjoyed reading the rest of MacAvoy but this is the one that I found *really* magic. I love this one (and someone hasn't returned my copy that he borrowed months ago!) Other favourite fantasy novels: anything by Guy Gavriel Kay, Robin McKinley, and Diana Wynne Jones (the last two and children's novelists), Meredith Pierce's Dankangel Triology, Diana Paxson's new ones (the one about Tristan and Iseult and _The Serpent's Tooth_ about Cordelia and Lear) are the only worth successors to _This Mists of Avalon_ that I've run across. There are others--I wish I could think of them now. It's obvious, though, that I'm a Celtophile (all that Scottish blood). --Neile ======================================================================== From: robert@lemuria@deepspace.nj00802.sai.com Date: Tue, 23 Mar 93 19:35 EST The following message was returned. Sorry! I must remember to type rutgers, not rytgers!!! Bob, lost on the Internet... Hi Folks! Haven't had the time to write much, but thought I'd check in and say Hello to everybody. I missed digest 495, and apparently Vickie had a Health Episode but is OK now (whew!). From what I can gather you did the right thing, Vickie. While talking to Vickie - yes I received the FAQs, and sent you at least two Emails since then! I will send you a message concurrently with this post; please let me know if you get it! My system seems to be running OK, though I do get mail returned now and then even though it shows up in the digest anyway. In your recent postings you mentioned that you had met Brian Eno. Did you know that Ray Jung, Happy's bassist, had studied with him? It's a small world after all! Also you were asking about everyone's hair: I have fairly long grey hair - not real long but enough to stand out in a crowd... In other news, an update from Susanne notes that Happy will be taping, not live, on Friday's WXPN stop. She will also be taping at WMMR Sunday AM. But she will be live on WYSP, Philly's "Classic Rock" station (Howard Stern All Morning, Classic Rock All Afternoon, and The Greaseman In The Evenings) (I don't listen to this station...) (But I will when Happy is on!) (Funny, they never play her music...) (They do play "Stairway to Heaven" a lot...) (Why am I babbling?)... Anyway, I'm looking forward to being at 21st Century Sound at 2PM Saturday. I keep asking, but are any local or close-by ectophiles planning on being there? I would think so, just wanted to know who I'd be meeting! Any of you going to Wilmington Friday Night? Respondez s'il vous plait! Yngve, regarding your post about Carole King, I've always enjoyed her music. When I was in Vietnam, her album "Tapestry" and Judy Collins' "Whales and Nightengales" really helped me along. Also enjoyed Spirit"s "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus". (This was 1971). And of course, CBR! Anyway, were you aware of an album of hers - well, with her - called "The City"? I think it was her, Danny Kootchmar (sp?)(played guitar for James Taylor), and... hmmm, too many neurons gone! It was released on Ode Records (same as Spirit), produced by Lou Adler, and all the songs were hers and Gerry's. One of my favorites of hers is on that album, a song called "The Snow Queen". There's also a version of "Goin' Back". I think the album came out in the late 1960's. BTW, one of my favorite versions of "Goin' Back" was by The Byrds, on "The Notorious Byrd Brothers" album. Well, that's all the news from here! Take care everybody and enjoy life! Again, for those of you coming to Philly this weekend, my home is open to you! Stop by and catch up on Ecto! Carole King did after she got divorced from Garry Goffin start a band called The City *ponder* They released an album too but it was not self-titled as far as I know. Could you please tell me some of the other songs on that album? The group broke up shortly after though. There is a version of Goin' Back (written in 1957) on her first solo-album called The Winter (1970). Tapestry is a very nicely done album but in the last months I've enjoyed her 1973(?) release _Fantasy_ even more. Just to say it - _Goin' Back_ was the title of her first solo-album released in 1957. She worked a lot with Paul Simon that time and has done that later as well. The album was no success though and she therefore decided (not for long that was :) ) to quit music and get an education. The only album by her with the word city in the title I know is her 1989 release _The City Streets_ . BTW has anyone of you heard the releases by Carole King's two daughters? Their albums are not available here in Norway :( *cry* -- ___________________________________________________________________ \ / | Yngve Hauge (yngveh@stud.cs.uit.no) | | Univerity of Tromsoe | | | | "Only in your eyes lies your soul" H.R | | "They are only putting in a nickel and | | they want a dollar song" Melanie | /__________________________________________________________________\ ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 24 Mar 93 16:33:42 CST From: America's funniest sappy wimp Subject: Today's bloviations Quoth Peskura: >I plan to go & get Belly-happy & drink beer with Jim 'RocketMan' Gurley. This datum brought to mind something which appeared in a high school reunion book from 1979. A classmate of mine reported that he, too, majored in German, and then spent substantial time wandering in the wilderness, occupationally speaking, until he landed a job as a functionary in a dealer of German cars, presumably due to his potential for dealing with their suppliers in their own language. The upshot is that jobs related to one's major need not necessarily be any better than those that are not. Ironically, last night I considered watching Bob Costas, unaware of who the guest would be, but instead elected to grab a few z's before time for _World News Now_. I missed the first hour of the latter anyway. Just goes to show you how finely honed my decision-making instincts can be :-). I did pick up Rosanne Cash's new album last week. It could well turn out to be the best al- bum I ever waited interminably to finally play, judging from what's been said about it in these pages. The newsgroup alt.music.alternative has lately had a thread called, rather unimaginatively, "Women in Rock," in which people have posited additions to the original poster's list of Women in Rock whom he'd like to spend five minute s alone with. Thus far, readers have come up with such suggestions as Kim Deal , Tanya Donnelley, Harriet Wheeler, Tina Weymouth, and a host of others, incu- ding such familiar names to ectophiles as Kate Bush and Tori Amos. Somehow, I reached the conclusion that even though nothing had been posted on this threa d in several days, I ought not let the issue rest without putting in a good word for Happy, so I did. Whether anyone will make the connection (I didn't quote anything from prior posts) remains to be seen. Note that the phrase "ObHappy" never appears in the above paragraph, now that I know what it really means. Since when has anything been truly obligatory in any post to this list :-)? Which, needless to say, is what makes it unique among music lists, not to mention the best music list on the net, notwithstand- ing the confusion this creates among new readers accustomed to more traditional lists with narrower conceptions of their own scope and mission. Greg pawtahs: >can't seem to find it (i have GOT to build bookshelves, already -- it >will make it a bit harder for the cats to play "mix up the books and >let greg find that one he *thought* he bought heh heh")(i swear my >cats go "heh heh" when my back is turned...)(they also snigger) Is this lugubrious scenario to be my lot in life before I know it? Thus far, my cat has done this to my stacked periodicals and loose papers With Vigah, as they used to say around the White House 30-plus years ago; but he has mer- cifully spared my proliferation of books _per se_. WRT Yngve's wonderings-out-loud about Carole King: I recall seeing an album be The City around 1977, and I'm positive it was self-titled. Her daughter, Louise Goffin, did an album called _This Is The Place_ about 1988; it appar- ently failed to catapault her to an enduring niche in the big time. King _Mere_, in the meantime, seems to have just come out with a new album, about which I know essentially nothing substantive. (I know I'm asking the wrong group.) Well, what do our SO's think of Happy? In a word, my wife says Happy is "depressing", but Happy is better than Kate's "bleeting". So, like a bad habit, I listen to my two top musical choices when Jean is not around :-(. Then again, Jean won't touch a bicycle, another favorite of mine. To each his own :-). Several have commented that Happy is depressing and/or intense. Intense, indeed. Depressing? That I think depends on the listener. Jean gets depressed easily, and wonders why I like Happy's music. That is not easy for me to answer. Perhaps it has something to do with a different view of imagination, and having so many opinions out of the mainstream. Listening to Happy is a release for me. Her music is NOT depressing to me. At times it is serene, soaring or pulsating. It demands of me to think, to follow through, to face my struggles head on. Sort of a musical Nike: "Just Do It!". Except for flame war struggles :-) Reminds me of Satie's "The Three Gymnopedies" (sp?). Some find it depressing; I find it serene but moving. *** You may find this depressing, so skip if you wish. *** And it is not well thought out; more so impressions; beware the details. One of my good bike buddies had a tragedy this past week. His wife did suicide. What a shock to me! Donna appeared so normal, so well balanced, she had it all. I later learned that she had a major case of bipolar disorder for many years. She took Lithium for years that stabilized her, but was taken off of it. A few months later she is gone. I had trouble sleeping that night, so got up early, and played Suicide Song in a new light. What a tragedy. I wonder, she must have felt such anguish. Certainly Alan does. SS seems so right. My older son is said to have Pervasive Developmental Disorder. It is a major disorder on the order of Schizophrenia and Autism, with some aspects of both, but otherwise is difficult to pin down. It's a label that doesn't help much. Ian is "normal, only more so." Again I wonder, what is "normal." Personal experiences such as with Donna and and Ian (I could name others) challange normalcy. Happy's music does so also, but more with feelings than intellect. (I can't quite say what I'm thinking, sorry.) We need to help, tolerate, appreciate those around us, despite their flaws, that we might be so treated. Jean and I have been closer than usual after this. Jean said her doctor, talking about her depression, asked if she were suicidal. No, she'd kill a few others first. "Good attitude." Perhaps the real coping key is that we support each other so well. Open, unrestricted, unstrained communication between us defuses problems before they build. In a way, Happy's music is a kind of emotional communication that encourages us to face our problems and work them out. Pardon me for saying this, but it's been on my mind: If any of us were to do suicide, it would be a denial of the terribly strong and lasting effect it has on those around us. And it would be a deep betrayal of Happy Rhodes. I am glad that some of you dump on this group some of your pains. Expressing your concerns helps you work through problems (works for me). An accepting group who listens is a big help. It is an important activity that is denied to too many. Many in this group have expressed an uncommon degree of concern and support. Maybe there is a growing force of people who care. Yes, it's good...
