I met Christine Kennel at the airport tonight, she'd just gotten back from her trip to Germany (her 30th birthday present from her husband) and though we didn't get to talk very long, every minute was *wonderful*! She's so cool, and I'm *SO* glad the timing worked out so we could meet. Airport meetings can be frustrating because of time restraints, but to me they're better than not meeting at all, and I had a good time in the time I was there. Happy's "baby talk"? I dunno about "Runners" and "Cohabitants" but she got the basic "language" (such as using the word "they") in the song "Terra Incognito" from a B. Kliban cat cartoon. Not the printing itself but the songs are not printed the way they come on the cd. So it is somewhat hard to follow the lyrics especially when you haven't heard the album before and do not know the titles of the songs. Correct. > She was, in a sense, >Hamlet's girlfriend, although he acted rather discourteously towards her in >the course of the play. Of course, this was primarily because Hamlet knew >Ophelia was helping Polonius to spy on him for the benefit of the King and >Queen. Hmmmmmmmmm, *I* always thought she was more like Hamlet's betrothed. Furthermore, I believe (not "I know") that his roughness with her was more a function of: a) His obsession with the avenging of his father's death. b) His need to appear "mad" (though, we find out, "there's a method to it") I never got the impression that Ophelia was, in any way, involved in the intrigue. In fact, I believe she wasn't taken very seriously by any one, least of all, Polonius. She is, IMHO, the *only* innocent in the play (including Ros and Guil), hence Hamlet's insistance (ironic) that she should get herself to a nunnery (a double entendre, there, I believe, as nunnery was also a synonym for bordello, cf. Hamlet's disillusionment with Gertrude). >P.S. As an aside to Jeff: You mention in your synopsis that Hamlet wanted to >kill both the King (his uncle) and the Queen (his mother) to avenge his >father's murder. I disagree. I don't believe he ever intends to kill >Gertrude. The only scene that comes close to making this statement is the one >in which he forces her to look at the two lockets (his [of his father], and >hers [of Claudius]). Some say he rapes his mother in this scene, some say he's >violent with her. At the very least, it's open to interpretation. However, he >doesn't murder her, and I don't believe he ever intends to. I only mention >this because there's been so much implied regarding his "Oedipal" relationship >with his mother. For the most part, I find this interpretation lacks validity. I agree. He *is* rough with her, but, I think more towards the end of relieving his frustration with what she has allowed to become of herself (vis a vis swooning over Claudius) "[some quote regarding swiftness and incestuous sheets]" and with "turning her eyes inward". He at once loves her (in more than a son-like manner???? I dunno, but almost got that impression from the recent video) and is incredibly disappointed etc. with her. EDITORIAL: *I* liked the Mel Gibson/Glenn Close version. Mel showed some substance which we, unfortunately, have been led to believe didn't exist. If you liked any of the Hamlets (including the version you read in high school) and have a sense of the absurd, see the Tim Roth/Gary Oldman movie version of Tom Stoppard's "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead". Stoppard also did the screenplay, and added a bunch of stuff. Absolutely wonderful....oh yeah, and Richard Dreyfuss has a role in it too. .----------------------------------------------------------------------. ./| GUILDENSTERN: | | |/| | | |/| But we both obey, and here give up ourselves | | |/| in the full bent to lay our service freely at | Chris Sampson | |/| your feet, to be commanded. | chris@neuron.uchc.edu | |/`-----------------------------------------------------------------------' |///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// `------------------------------------------------------------------------' ======================================================================== Subject: Re: Terra Incognita Date: Wed, 24 Mar 93 15:08:55 +0000 From: Stephen Thomas The Almight Footah enthuses about R.A.MacAvoy... >me too me too! i'm still kicking myself for borrowing her first few >books instead of buying them -- alas, they are hard to find now... >the recent "lens of the world" promised great things -- has any more >come of this series??? Well, I can't say really. Of the Damiano Trilogy, I've read "Damiano" (which I found interesting, but not Earth-shattering), and "Damiano's Lute", much later. I haven't read "Raphael" (yet). I've also read "Tea With the Black Dragon", which I adored, and its sequel "Twisting the Rope", which was OK, but didn't really grab me. Maybe I should go back to it and see if either it or I have changed. I've also read "The Third Eagle", which (again) was good, but not Earth-shattering (IMHO). I will admit that some of Happy's music is weird. But my 2 points (which I will now articulate even *more* clearly) still apply: Point 1) There are lots of other artists that are equally *weird* that get airplay. Weirdness is just another way of saying "I'm not used to it." If you hear it a few times, much of the weirdness ceases. Point 2) There *are* plenty of Happy songs that are quite straightforward and *not* weird. Many of these can be found on volume 1 & 2. Perhaps there are less on Rear and Ecto, but certainly Warpaint has some non-weird songs (e.g. Waking Up, In Hiding), and, I would argue, so does EQP (e.g. Mother Sea). The weirdest thing about Runners, I would posit, is knowing that that is just one person singing, and that she is female. Once you get over that, well, the music isn't unusual it's the voice that puts people off. Of course I am not denying some element of weirdness in Happy's music... after all, we wouldn't be here otherwise, right? -mjm "What we are and what we were once are now far astray" [or is it estranged?] ======================================================================== From: shark@cs.ucla.edu (Jeanne B.
