Previous to 1992, they were playing music together under the band-name of The Hodads, aimed at a college/country audience. Gogh Van Go is produced by Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLachlan, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle), and recorded at his unique studio in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec. The mood of this music is very similar to Sarah McLachlan's "Solace" album. In fact, the sound quality is almost identical, and the vocals are mastered the same way (nor surprising, really). Their debut album, self-titled, is on AudioGram records, on Distribution Select. The catalog number of the CD is ADCD10058, and you can reach the record company distributors in Montreal at (514) 525-2426 (Keely Kemp) Toronto at (416) 594-9308 (Bill St-Georges) While I have not had the pleasure of seeing them on stage yet, I understand they have a very impressive live presence. Definitely worth looking into if you really like Sarah McLachlan's album, Solace. -- | Alan Ezust depeche@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca Montreal, Quebec, Canada | |------------- McGill University School of Computer Science ----------------| Chew your gum and close your eyes and nothing can annoy you. - E.Ka-Spel ======================================================================== Subject: So be ready for the storm Date: Sat, 13 Mar 93 16:34:42 EST From: Angelos Kyrlidis Hi, This is wild! They all have lots of computer sounds and dancable beats to them. I don't think these mixes were done by the members of Miranda Sex Garden. The actual album "Madra" is entirely acapella - they sing lots of old english poetry and minstel musings, but there are NO instruments in the entire disc. Yes, each song is very brief. I find I was instantly charmed by these musicians at first. I even like the dance mixes. However, the album "Madra" must be taken in small doses as after a while it starts to get to the listener - the songs start all sounding the same, the words become meaningless, and the voices even become just a tad bit irritating. This is only MHO, however - I'm sure there are other members of this list who like MSG quite a bit. -- | Alan Ezust depeche@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca Montreal, Quebec, Canada | |------------- McGill University School of Computer Science ----------------| Chew your gum and close your eyes and nothing can annoy you. - E.Ka-Spel ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 14 Mar 93 02:59:17 GMT From: brage@sphere.home.id.dth.dk (Jens P. Brage) Subject: Concert report: Marie Bergman Hi, I've just been to a great Marie Bergman concert tonight, and wanted to bring her to your attention. Marie Bergman is a Swedish singer who has been around for some time (judging from some of the stories she told tonight, she has been composing and singing for at least 18 years), though I only know of a single album by her ("Heya He'ya"). She mostly performs her own music, though she also performed a version of "Complainte Pour Ste. Catherine" and something I suspect is a Bellman song. She play acoustic guitar, and her band consisted of a drummer, a bass player (it looked somewhat like an acoustic bass, but with (a lot of :-)) amplification) and her husband on a lot of guitars (quite a guitar player, btw.). Her music spans a large range, from quiet, but intense ballads over joyous love songs to aggresive political songs. Her voice is very varied, not that her range is very large, but she has a lot of vocal control, going from soft, pure singing to all-out screaming when it suits her (yeah! :-)). In-between songs, she told stories about herself, her children (the preface to one of her songs was about how she had felt holding her daughter as a baby, and how this had inspired the song. Then, in the middle of the song, she interrupted it and told us about how she now (18 years later) felt about her daughter being a grown woman, and then she sang a new song about that) and lots of other things. In between singing and telling stories, she also managed to flirt seriously with the audience (she's a very, well, sensuous woman. I suspect quite a few in the audience was disappointed when she introduced her guitar player as her husband :-)). The intention was that tonight's concert is to become a live album, and she opened the concert by explaining that she wanted to do a live recording in Montmatre (the concert site) because she felt at home in this club. She then proceeded to welcome us to her home for a couple of hours... :-) I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy the CD when/if it becomes available. Ecto recommendation: Marie Bergman belongs to the slightly rougher end of the female performers, but I think she could be of interest to Ectophiles. If you like, e.g., Melissa Etheridge and Sinead O'Conner, then check her out. One small problem: Her lyrics are all in Swedish (perhaps I could be persuaded to translate some of it, though). Jens P. As I was perusing the latest ecto digest, an interesting thread developed. Alan mentioned certain words Happy used, and Vickie followed with a zany note on album progression. Of course, many bands and musicians develop over the course of several albums, but Happy's progression is interesting in that the technical caliber of her music has always been consistantly high. The quality of her words has also remained excellent with respect to imagery, prosody and the like. What has evolved has been: Production quality. Vickie notes the first albums are sparse; Happy was recording for herself. With Rearmament, more attention to smaller detail is lavished on the recording, a progression that continues through Ecto to Warpaint, where Kevin begins to assist in production, and now Equipoise, which we all agree is the best sounding Happy Rhodes album yet. Content. Here is where Vickie hit the nail on the head! Equipoise is indeed a transition album contextually, while Reamament's transition was in production (mostly... these things are not easy to define, and that's why Vickie was having trouble!:)) Happy's demons (Hi Tirk!) may never fully leave her, but she will make peace with herself (yet). To go back a bit, I am very impressed with the quality of Happy's songwriting. As a musician, I admire the progressions she creates and the way she fits her words to them. From Rhodes I to Equipoise, the quality of the songwriting itself is unchanged. I've sat down with my guitar and played along with the albums and it's a wonderful feeling to musically experience what's going on! By the way, I note there are several other musicians on Ecto, so I'd like to formally apply to be in the cover band that plays in the subways!! Do you need a bass guitarist?:) Anyway, there my two pfennigs on the thread. Consistant music, improving recordings, and the growth of a human soul. We may all count ourselves fortunate to have had the opportunity to listen to the music of Happy Rhodes, or as the bard herself sings: "My ears are lucky to hear this glorious songs of inspiration..." BTW, I was that "Poor PhilEctophile" to whom Alan referred! I love the idea and I'm glad Kevin OK'd it for Philly. As I really live in New Joisey, I suggested the local South Jersey paper as a candidate as well. Lovely weather we're having! ('nuff said!) By sheer chance I'm listening to it as I read this!) Anyway, the album consists of English madrigals, done straight. Well done, for that kind of thing. I heard a track from a more recent CD of theirs on the radio recently, and I must get it. BTW, to whoever's heading to Austin for the SXSW tourist-trap... er, festival, the station to listen to is KGSR (though someone should get a copy of Happy's stuff to John Aielli who runs the show Eklektikos weekday mornings. He has a loyal listenership, and I think he'd play her stuff). I'm not sure how many other shiny Happy people we have out here; I stumbled across Warpaint a few months ago (after seeing Vickie's ravings on gaffa) and have been playing it like crazy (in fact, by sheer chance... :-]), and got Equipoise last week or so. I've tried turning more people on to it, but it'll take time. ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 14 Mar 93 01:32:59 -0800 From: Michael G Peskura Subject: Yes, Happy Birthday I hope you had a great birthday, Kiri ... I think it's "Well, there's a beacon in the sky, meant to catch their eye." Is there anyone who hears something else? (I hope this wasn't obvious to most of you already.) BTW, I love this song, and I tend to agree with the "ironic" interpretation (I especially like the bit about the wheatfields :-), but I also think that there could have been a time when Happy believed that aliens might come to "save our souls." Just take a look at the lyrics of _Look for the child_. Someone asked a while ago (can't remember who it was, sorry) a question about the meaning of _Closer_, namely what it was that the character of the song was getting closer to. I think the answer is in the lyrics, although not printed in the booklet. The character of the song is "getting closer to the open door." I think the "open door" stands for freedom, either physical or mental. I'm wondering myself if there is a connection between this song and _Asylum master_ from _Rhodes II_. There is a strong similarity between the themes of the two songs. They pretty much let the entire CD play and structured their routines around the different pieces of music. Amazing dancing!! Very dark and surreal, with great use of lighting and projected imagery.
