I've been slack in my duties, and will no doubt have to sleep in the closet under the stairs tonight as punishment. ;-) I promise that this shall be one of my priorities this weekend! And I will faithfully post my detailed views on Monday! Vickie, you sent that list of stations that have Happy's albums & none were in the Boston area that I could see in that list. Are there any in the Bean Town area that are known to carry her stuff? I know a lot of us have spotted Happy's music in the record stores around Boston, but has anyone heard any of her music on the radio? "Questions, questions, always questions! Needless to say, this is advan- tageous when it comes to getting a head start on acquiring certain information, some of which I am now pleased to share with all of you. Turns out that the Indigo Girls, and an accompanying act to be announced (which by the law of averages, probably won't be Happy--rats!) will be doing a single performance on April 20 at Valparaiso University in the Indiana town of the same name, a longish but still doable drive from Chicago. It will be at 8 PM (not sure if that's Central or Eastern time) in the Athletics Recreation Center . They say, "ticket sales begin soon" (how informative :-) ). For more info, they say, call (219) 464-5233 or -5230. Earlier this week, Chris Kennel typoed that she'd be leaving for a vacation in Germany on St. Patty's day (sic), a fluff with which I then proceeded to have a modicum of fun. Believe it or not, Brother Jimmy's BBQ and Booze, on N. Sheffield, is now touting its upcoming St. Patty's Music Fest, featuring the Cathy Richardson Band, formerly Dick Holiday and the Bamboo Gang, on St. Patty's Day itself. Guess truth really is stranger :-). WRT Brian's query on other ectophiles in Dallas: is Vishal Markandey still on the list? I'd meant to mention that in my note to him WRT nixpubs, but I forgot. I received the following post to comp-academic-freedom-talk yesterday. Not only might it be of interest in its own right to ectophiles in Greater Boston, but it's kind of an interesting object lesson in what you can do with just the standard keyboard characters when it comes to doing graphics for the standard terminal screen (or in the alternate, how you can clutter up the simplest mess- age with pretentious attempts at fancy-schmancy graphic blandishment): ************************************************************************* * * * In honor of Freedom of Information Day * * * * A Public Forum * * * * with * * * * MIKE GODWIN * * * * Legal Services Counsel, The Electronic Frontier Foundation * * * * "Civil Liberties on the Electronic Frontier" * * * * and * * * * JAY LUCKER * * * * Director, MIT Libraries * * * * "Freedom of Information, the University, and the Library" * * * * Tuesday March 16, 1993 * * * * 4 p.m. Bdlg. 66-110 * * * * Massachusetts Institute of Technology * * * * sponsored by the MIT Libraries * * * * further info from kamorgan@athena.mit.edu * * * ************************************************************************* To change the subject completely: I was just looking up something in the ecto archives from last November (the new subdirectory structure, btw, makes it wonderfully easy to locate things--way to go, Jessica), when I stumbled onto a post from Vickie reporting that she'd just received the building blocks for the Happy Birthday Project originally scheduled for release last summer. (In a way, it's nice to see our little rump-operation has something in common with the big labels when it comes to delayed releases.) Vickie, what's the morning line these days on when we can look forward to doubling our listening pleasure? For that matter, when might we be tripling our listening pleasure with all of the above plus the '92 Happy Gift Project? Finally: the other day I posted the following brainteaser to rec.games.trivia. The segue between, I believe it was Red Rain and Don't Give Up, was absolutely the coolest thing I'd ever heard, completely unintended, no doubt. The keys of the 2 songs are different... at the end of RR there is a bit where PG sings a high "Rain" (I think) then "over me in the red red sea, red rain), something like that. Imagine that slightly out of phase with the fading in start of Don't Give Up... it is the eeriest, most interesting harmony, or should I say dischord (is there a difference)? Maybe an hour or two at the _most_ (it's just a hop down 65) (sez he who roadtripped from Bloomington to Chicago just to see The Residents perform Cube-E: The History of American Music in Three E-Z Pieces). As Valparaiso is part of "The Region" it's probably on Chicago-time (aka CST), but don't hold me to that. Indiana is *so* weird when it comes to time zones. Technically, the state is on Eastern Standard year round; they dont' use daylight savings. Thus, during the winter, the state appears to be on EST and during the summer, when the east coast switches to EDT, the state _appears_ to be using CDT. The exceptions to this are the areas around Chicago, IL and Louisville, KY. As rather far outlying suburbs, it behooves these areas to use the time zone related to the metro area. Obviously Kev and Hap have been very busy... they took two weeks to send my order (which included a WP and an EQP for Ken Taylor). But they made up for it. :) Happy signed the CD : "To Martin, the Bermuda Triangle of postal packages." :) (referring to the 1st4 set that never made it here)... and Kevin included a rather long letter answering all my questions. Other Sesame Street fans amongst us may be interested to know that Kevin has done "many numbers and letters for them, as have a lot of animators and composers." He says, "As you know, you may see the letter 'E', for example, shown four or five different ways per show. Chances are I did one of them. The music is usually very "synth-poppy" and the animation is usually cutouts of items that dance about and fly into patterns. I've done K, C, X, Y, E, B, A. G, Q, O, I, 13, 16, 19, 1 thru 10, "toothpaste" as a movie trailer, "orange", "between", quilts and various pattern recognitions." ! ... Guess who's going to be watching Sesame Street a whole lot closer! :) He also found my observation that most of the Ectophiles are scientists very interesting. He says people have told him that his music reminds him of "programs and sub-programs running in parallel, but Happy's music? I think it's the search for truth and she certainly lays that on the line." Aural Gratification's "Sales Manager" is apparently still working on distribution in Australia... having just "procured S.Africa and Spain" (!) And he says that Tower International are interested, and are there any Tower stores in Oz... There aren't any on the West coast, .. ChrisB? Graham? are there any over your side? Now. On to the album itself. 1. I like it a lot. Even the first time I heard it (I've heard it thrice now) 2. My immediate favourite song was Cohabitants, I think, but it's all very good. There are parts where cohesion between the instruments seems to break down and things seem a bit corny, but then usually Happy's vocals come in and everything's better again. :) Ah. 3. There are no fantastic vocal acrobatics such as are found on the earlier stuff... I'm thinking particularly of the Amazing Hovering Lilt Effect (tm) as found on (bugger, can't remember the name) that song with "Mikey" in it. At least, none that are obvious on a first listening or two... which means nothing, I guess. Please somebody prove me wrong and point out some really amazing bits for my parasites. :) 4. There is very little guitar on the album, despite Happy's autograph on my copy of Warpaint, which reads "Look for more guitar on my next album!" Which is precisely what I had to do... look for it. :) Finally found it on the second track, I think it was, though it's not her playing it, nor anyone I've heard of.. though the guitar is really quite cool. 5. I'm way behind with Ecto and have missed or are yet to see many of your comments, theories and analyses... undoubtedly you'll already be working out what colour underwear she was wearing while recording. :) [ BTW, to save you time, Kevin answered that one too: Warm Fuzzy Blue :) ;) ;P ] So I'll leave more until I can listen more and catch up with you all. ;-P It's been really hard to get anything done in my spare time lately. I usually get home and immediately "chuck a mitch" on the couch... :) Howver, I have a pile of Gyan CDs ready to go, and letters to a couple of you half-written... I'll finish them! Really I will! Walking toward the "R"s I saw a fellow walking away and for some reason I glanced down to check out the CDs he was holding. One of them was _Ecto_ and I said "woah, how did you find out about Happy?" "From the net" was the reply and it turns out he's an Ecto lurker I didn't know about! (I won't mention names if he wants to remain a lurker) How cool! I didn't get the Brazil soundtrack because I only had enough money for one CD and I saw the new Mouth Music and bought that instead. (Yes, I *will* go back and get it. We've actually had the soundtrack on cassette for a couple of years now so I have heard Kate's song. It seems absurd to pay $13.99 + tax for a 2 minute long song, but of course, we'll do it anyway.) I got home and put on the Mouth Music and then remembered that I needed to call Kevin so I did. I told him that I had just bought the new MM and he said that *he* was listening to it too, right then! I asked Happy where her 12-string was, and she said that that song got left off the album. (She also said "we'll see" when I asked if it would appear on the CD single. If my memory is not failing me, I think the name of the song was "Green Eggs") Before I forget, I'll pass along a couple of other things. The monster on the cover does have a name, and his name is Tirk. Second....no, wait....I think I'll turn this into a gussing game. Happy told me that the songs "Closer" and "Temporary and Eternal" were originally inspired by films. (Notice I say "inspired by" *NOT* "based on" so don't take that to mean that these films are what the songs are about.) If anyone wants to guess, I'll hold off on telling for a few days. It'll be interesting to see what people come up with. A couple of hints to get you started: They're very well-known films, not "art-house" films, and they both star very well-known actors. One was a huge box-office success and the other one did ok. It didn't bomb anyway. I'll give a couple more hints tomorrow if no one has guessed them.
