'Nuff said! - Michael B. ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1993 16:15:13 CST From: Subject: In the spirit of the [fuzzy?] blue eagle and other stories Historians of the Great Depression of 1930's America will remember that many of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal programs were administered by the National Recov- ery Administration (NRA), and that as a gesture of solidarity with the program, homes and businesses nationwide displayed signs with the NRA's Blue Eagle logo and the imprimatur "NRA--WE DO OUR PART." It is somewhat in this spirit that I now share with you how I recently did my part, somewhat along the lines of the suggestions posted by Alan, to spread the gospel of Equipoise to radio in my community. What follows is the text of a letter I emailed yesterday, accompanied by a copy of Vickie's FAQ, to Andrew Patner, a critic for WBEZ, the NPR station in Chicag o. I put you all through this now on the theory that some of what I wrote may be useful as a model when dealing with unfamiliar radio people, and perhaps people in other media as well. >Dear Mr. Patner: > >I am a regular listener and subscriber to WBEZ, and a subscriber to Ecto, >a mailing list on the Internet for fans of Happy Rhodes, an obscure but >(hopefully) up-and-coming singer-songwriter from Albany, New York. Your email >address was listed in Eric Zorn's column in the February 16 Chicago _Tribune_. >I am writing to ask for your help in bringing Happy's music to the attention >of appropriate people at the station. > >Happy's sixth album, _Equipoise_, was released last month on the Aural Grati- >fication label. Selections from her previous albums are played periodically on American Public Radio's _Echoes_ program, which WBEZ broadcasts early Sunday mornings. I believe that her music may be of interest to a number of the prog- >ram hosts on the station--not only from the standpoint of playing her recor- >dings, but from the standpoint of possible interviews and in-studio performan- >ces as well. Recent postings to the Ecto list have reported that she hopes to >arrange such performances with radio stations in the not-too-distant future. > >With regard to airplay for _Equipoise_ and her other albums, I believe that >Stuart Rosenberg would be the program host most likely to be interested; but >Chris Heim might also find Happy's music to be of interest, albeit less as the host of _Passport_ than in her other role as a record critic for the _Tribune_. >As far as interviews and live performances are concerned, I think they would >fit in with the format of any one or more of _The Earth Club_, _Radio Gumbo_, >_Artistic License_, or _Backstage Pass_. > >I am attaching a copy of a Frequently Asked Questions document on Happy's >music. It was written by Vickie Mapes, also a subscriber and regular contrib- >utor to Ecto, and the host of "Suspended in Gaffa" on WZRD radio here in >Chicago. We would be grateful if you could share this information with which- >ever members of the WBEZ staff you consider appropriate. In the alternate, if any of these individuals are on the net themselves and accept email from the >public, I would be glad to send the FAQ to them directly, if I'm informed of >their email addresses. > >Thank you. > > Mitch Pravatiner > U15289@uicvm.uic.edu WRT other matters: Uli wrote me WRT Monday's post: >Mitch mitches: >> >> The big Langenscheidt's dictionary upstairs gives several definitions for > "ver- >> drossen[heit]." It seems to me that this is essentially what I was driving at with the notion of "political annoyance," at least in the sense of annoyance about politicians, and possibly also the sense of annoyance over issues--in a way, it could be thought of as _verdrossenheit_ of one sort (vexation) inspired by that of another sort (lassitude). Bob says: > Mitch - I saw Tower of Power when I lived out west, guess it was 1972! >They were great and remain a fond memory! Nice to read that snippet! I assume he really means Joy of Cooking, whose compilation apparently still isn't out in stores where I am :-('. As best I can recall, Tower of Power was a rhythm and blues act in the early 70's, whose music (insofar as I heard it on the radio) I never liked as much as Joy of Cooking, nor all that much in absolute terms. I don't know if that's the same Tower of Power Bob profess- es to remember. I guess asking if it's worth seeing is futile... Angelos ************************* hi clueless :) i just heard the first (very hard to find) throwing muses album last night. wow!! they can takes stuff that nobody would ever think would work together, and then make it work together. one thing: tanya donelly is no longer with them, and this seems to have adversely affected their sound, and their songwriting, but i would still be delighted to see kristen hirsh. but then again, donelly's new band belly is excellent :) :) :) kristen writes some really intense, very poetic lyrics, sorta like michael stipe on a GOOD day. i saw her on tv maybe a year ago doing a solo show, just her and her guitar. if she does that, don't expect to be dancing in the aisles, but if you listen to the words and the music, you'll get a lot out of it. Some other fields for entries in the list: Comparisons: i.e. what other artists this one sounds like. (I always think that this is a slightly unfair way of reviewing an artist, and doesn't do justice to their individuality, however it's a very useful tool for getting an idea of whether you'd like someone or not). Recomended first album: (if there are varying opinions then perhaps list the top two or three). Recommended by: list of ecto-subscribers (useful to get further info once you've looked something up on the list). Year of release for albums. I'll volunteer to do (provide entries for and co-ordinate) Roy Harper, Nick Drake and Ashley Maher, since they're the artists that I currently feel most that it's my duty to promote. (side note: a little over a year ago I bought Little Earthquakes and subsequently decided to set myself the task of promoting her music to friends and on the net. Either I was emensely succesful in this (which is unlikely) or Tori didn't really need my help (much more likely). However I've now concluded that this is no longer necessary and satisfy myself with running a mailing list about her and watching it grow). Also I'd be willing to do All About Eve and Mairi MacInnes on the basis that I've recommended them on ecto in the past. I'm not sure that I'd have time to handle entries for Tori, though I'd give that a go if no one else wants to. -Anthony ======================================================================== From: brianb@lobby.ti.com (Brian Bloom) Subject: Re: An Ectophiles Guide to Good Music (again, but revised) Date: Wed, 10 Mar 93 17:28:41 CST Anthony Kosky (kosky@saul.cis.upenn.edu) came up with some ideas that I want to strongly second: > Some other fields for entries in the list: > > Comparisons: i.e. what other artists this one sounds like. He was a British soldier, and wrote his poems in his diary, which was sent home along with his personal affects after his death. His sister later had the poems published. Another poem of his, "Dulce et decorum est" provides the lyrics for "The Latin One", also on _Hope Chest_ (but, thankfully, Natalie sings that one :). The poignancy of the poems is increased with the knowledge that he died in the very same war he was so much against... it was a great big nice surprise to see two of his best works set to music. So don't rank on poor "Anthem for Doomed Youth". They say the best ones write what they know, and boy, did he ever. :) Meredith meth@aol.com ======================================================================== From: meth@aol.com Subject: Re: call for volunteers/a pub... Any paper that uses AP wire is also a member of the AP, so any story printed in any paper that uses AP has potential for distribution over the wire.
