It is due out in the U.S. on March 23. WXPN in Philadelphia has been playing the song "Sleeping Satellite", which sounds kind of Tori Amos - like. After listening to the entire album, however, I found that there a number of more rocking songs. I've only listened to it twice so far, but (because) the people I loaned it to have all liked it. You might want to check it out when it becomes available. Apparently, Tasmin Archer is #1 in about half a dozen countries, and in the top 10 of most of the rest of Europe. I recently saw a tour schedule, and a number of her concerts were sold out well in advance. Of course, the same could be said about a number of artists I wouldn't spend any money on, so popularity doesn't always mean quality. -- ============================================================================ Bill Pringle Software Tools Paramax Corporation Voice: (215)443-7500 X4023 Internet: wrp@ivy.paramax.com UUCP: ...!uunet!mimsy!widener!gvls1!wrp%ivy ======================================================================== Date: 5 Mar 1993 13:17:17 U From: "Chris Waite" Subject: Re: Requesting Happy Reply to: RE>Requesting Happy It might be a good idea to make up a file full of phone numbers of radio stations that have the equipoise CDs. It's a review from the February 25 _Chicago Tribune_ of the forthcoming compilation of sides from the late 60's/early 70's band Joy of Cooking--a legend of sorts in its time. JOY OF COOKING: American Originals (Capitol) [3 stars] Unreconstructed hippies and new-age flower children will rejoice in this great- est non-hits package, featuring one of the most delightfully eclectic and exuberant groups of the early 70's. Joy of Cooking--fronted by bluesy vocalist Terry Garthwaite and writer-keyboardist-guitarist Toni Brown--featured Latin-in fluenced rhythms, jazzy noodling and bouncy love songs from a woman's point of view, at a time when guitar bands raged and testosterone flowed. The scat-fill ed workout on "Did You Go Downtown," and plaintive "Red Wine at Noon" and "The War You Left," are representative of the strengths of this influential, yet obscure, Berkeley group, whose sound remains as fresh today as it was when first heard 20 years ago. Gary Dretzka WRT Kiri's reality dream: There is a local controversy here among residents of one of the seediest public housing projects in the city, about whether the housing authority's long-term desire to downsize the project, upgrade the surviving housing stock and bring in a more economically diverse mix of tenants is a scheme to sell the entire development to gentrifiers, who would supposedly drive out all the incumbent inhabitants. If the project in Kiri's dream were at risk of such a fate, it could have lent a whole new meaning to the line, "in seventeen hours he moved Vern out." :-) Christine previews her birthday-gift to Germany: >Me and a friend leave >on St. Patty's Day Interesting. Never knew anyone on this list to be that heavily into Ms. Smyth' s music :-) :-). But seriously, it sounds like fun. Enjoy. Meredith should be pleased to learn that I've written to Bob asking him to pass onto Susanne my suggestion that she talk Happy up to the people in charge of buttons, zippers, and early-morning artist profiles at NPR, as well as to WKQX, the home of Tori`s live radio concert the other day (Bob, did you get the resend of my latest note yesterday?). The KQX morning man, Robert Murphy,--to whom I listened briefly this morning, for the first time in years--is a master of the pithy zinger; it would be great fun, methinks, to hear Happy match wits with him. And if Tori could parry Steve Fisher's inane questions so deftly, just think what kind of shape Happy would leave him in :-). For some unknown reason (thereby remaining consistent with the general theory of causation in my life), Vickie's exposition of the causal process that begins with asking strangers which of Happy's albums to buy reminds me of the follow- ing exposition of another drawn-out chain of causation, which somehow has alway s amused me, and I hope will amuse you as well: NEVER BITE A MARRIED WOMAN ON THE THIGH Shel Silverstein Never bite a married woman on the thigh 'Cause she just can't wash it off, no matter how she'll try And when he gets home at night her man will ask her why And she will get hysterical and she will start to cry And he'll say "I don't blame you, but tell me who's the guy" And he'll buy an airplane ticket and he'll fly across the sky And then he'll come and find you and he'll punch you in the eye And he'll rent a cheap hotel room and he'll hang himself with his tie And when she gets the news she's gonna be so upset, she'll take an overdose of sleeping pills, and lie down on the couch and die So never, never, never, never, never, never, never Bite a married woman on the thigh The first time I ever heard Sinead O'Connor's music, years before she became consumed by self-importance, it immediately made me want to find the full text of Silverstein's "Hooray for a Bald-Headed Woman," so I guess he does have some direct relevance to what we do here. I've just seen Vickie's latest edition of the ecto FAQ. Well said, Vickie! (The same goes for her account of her encounter with Tori, after the latter had emerged triumphant from her encounter with Steve Fisher and his cavalcade of fatuities.) Actually, the person to go to with radio information is Susanne White, who will hopefully join our ranks by the end of the month. She has a database of radio stations on her computer, and is constantly looking to update it with addresses and phone numbers of radio stations she doesn't have on the database, so she can send CDs to them too. (I'm currently getting a list of radio station addresses together to send her- they're in California, and she may not have them on file yet.) Otherwise, your local phone book will usually contain a listing for some number for each radio station in the area- if that number listed isn't the request line, I'm sure the person you've reached can tell you what it is. Meredith (DJ who knows :) meth@aol.com ======================================================================== From: meth@aol.com Subject: Bela & the 3 Little Flecktones Date: Sat, 06 Mar 93 17:22:30 EST Hi! Saw Bela Fleck and the Flecktones again last Thursday night, at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. They're a trio now, since the keyboardist and harmonicameister extraordinaire Howard Levy left the group at the end of last year to be with his family and pursue more traditional jazz interests in and around Chicago. But they've more than compensated for his absence... one tune they played when I saw the quartet in December was led off by a long, plaintive tin whistle solo by Howard, and Bela did it this time with his electric banjo and (Footah take note) e-bow!!! It was amazing. (I wonder if anyone else has thought to use an e-bow with an electric banjo. For that matter, I wonder if anyone else has thought to use the electric banjo???) The performance was tight, and they were all having a roaring good time up there- I'd say at least 75% of what they played was made up as they went along. They played a lot of new material, and plan to go into the studio next month to record an album, which should hit the stores sometime in July. (Kate Bush, are you taking notes? Four MONTHS to put out an album, not four YEARS!) Victor Lamont Wooten is, hands down, the best bass player in the universe. No contest. (I'm not even going to stick an "imho" in this statement, because It Is The Truth.) He has a new trick: he puts one fretted bass on a stand in front of him, stands behind it, and plays it while simultaneously accompanying himself on the fretless bass slung over his shoulder. The things he can do with his instruments defy description- you just have to see it as it happens in front of you. (That is also why studio recordings of this group, while recorded live in the studio, lack the energy of the live performance: you can't really appreciate these artists' genius until you see what they're doing. It's utterly awesome.) One highlight of the show was when Bela unplugged his acoustic banjo, sat down on the edge of the stage, and played a bluegrass tune that would have tied a lesser player's fingers into knots after the first measure. I know a circle of SF writers and editors who worship him as a god, and I know why. :> Flecktones tour dates (tentative and incomplete): 3/7: Garde Arts Theater, New London, CT 3/24: Kentucky Theater, Lexington, KY 3/26: Parrish Hall, Hamilton, OH 4/14: Rockefellers, Houston, TX 4/15: Main St. Arts Festival, Ft.
