First let me tell you that I am only once a week next to the net and so I write most of my messages at home and take them to the net, posting them from a disk. Now I have made an error and took the wrong file for the subject 'Further first Happy impressions', so there was one article that was posted twice and one that wasn't posted at all. Anyway, here's what I already wanted to post last week: Hi all, a few weeks ago I introduced a netless Katefan to several Ectolike female singers. The tapes consisted of some Sarah McLachlan, some Loreena McKennit, some Mylene Farmer (ok, never mentioned here, but I like her), some Happy ('Feed the Fire', 'Phobos', 'Wrong Century', 'Terra Incognita', 'Words weren't made for Cowards', 'If love is a game, I win', 'Would that I could', 'Off from out from under me', 'Ecto' and 'Poetic Justice'), a lot of Kate and Kate-related he himself was unable to track down/didn't know of and some Tori Amos. He said he disliked the Running Up That Hill cover from Blue Pearl (something I can understand), but he likes 'Smells like Teen Spirit' (he's - after Kate - a heavy metal fan) and doesn't know if he prefers Tori or Nirvana. Best of all: He likes Happy, especially WTIC, FTF, WWMFC, and PJ. Now I am curious if he's going to write to Albany... He compared Happy with two people: when she sings in her high voice, she sounds like Kate, when she sings low more like Alison Moyet. He even compared her style with Enya, something I cannot understand (though I like Enya (but not Shepherd Moons)). bye, Uli ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 2 Mar 93 12:32:21 +0100 From: Ulrich Grepel Subject: Happy peppermint I've come across another Happy-product-idea, and that one did not come out of my mind, it went through my hands straight into my mouth: There is a 'Happy Peppermint' chocholate bar filled with (guess what ?) peppermint availlable in German shops. It comes in a package of 16 or so bars and the single bars are wrapped in GREEN (remember my towel?) paper. Somehow some people are color-blind... Bye, Uli ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 2 Mar 93 12:30:45 +0100 From: Ulrich Grepel Subject: cohabitants and the German language Cohabitants German? No, not on the first, not on the last (what? a last one?), not on any listen inbetween, but suddenly the sound reminded me of a - well - sound that can be heard on the compilation 'Kann denn Schwachsinn Suende sein' of the Austrian band 'Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung'. This band is not something that is anything like something we here normally listen to, but if you understand the lyrics (German), they're just fun. The piece in question is an eleven second track, called 'Prmft-Bubub'. As you can imagine, you can't put much music into an eleven second track with such a title, and it really is just a human producing a quite wierd sound while expelling the rest of the air out of his lungs. Sorry, I can't describe it better, you'll have to listen to it. Oh - the name of the band can be translated into English quite well - I would call them 'first common unsurance'. The album title can also be translated to 'Could nonsense really be a sin', reminding of the old Marlene Dietrich title 'Kann denn Liebe Suende sein' (could love really be a sin). Now please don't ask if love is nonsense... Bye, Uli P.S.: I really love Save Our Souls, and the 'trumpets' Dirk hears have never ever even reminded me of trumpets until Dirk told us so :). Like Vickie I think these sounds are adding something ectoterestrial feeling to it. And I don't like the sound of real trumpets anyway. There's just one thing that's worse, and that's electric piano. Like in 'Mother Sea', that's a song I don't like, same as 'In Hiding'. If it's a piano, it just has to be a real one! ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 01 Mar 93 08:32:14 +0000 From: Terry Partis Subject: HaPpY Birthday Here's wishing a very HAPPY birthday to Christine Kennel on March 2nd. They would probably love to have her (especially after I keep requesting her music be played!), b/c they love Radio tours. (Tel: 617-578-8890. Address: 450 Boston Ave, Medford, MA 02155 - A mere few blocks from my house!) 3) WHRB (Harvard Radio): Well, I work at Harvard so I had to include it :-). (Tel. 617-495-4818. Address: 45 Quincy, Cambridge, MA 02138) 4) WFNX (Boston Phoenix Radio - the local entertainment weekly): It's probably the only mainstream station that might be open to alternative music. (Tel. 617-595-6200. Address: ? Lynn, MA) Angelos and maybe some other local yokels might be able to suggest some other stations that I missed. (Boston College and MIT have good stations as I recall, but I don't remember their call letters to look them up.) I left out my old college station WBRS (Brandeis University Radio), where I DJ'd many a night in college, because they have a limited broadcast area and really aren't that good! Which reminded me that I neglected yesterday to respond to mjm's, I think it was, query on the meaning of "vern." I just looked again in the online Oxford English Dictionary at this system, and found (as before) the definition of "vern" as "southern dial. var. FERN." The latter evoked about 6 different meanings, including "Former, ancient, of old" and "One of a large group of vascular cryptogamous plants." The only one that really fit into the context of the OLAL lyric was "orig. a crime, monst- rous thing; for the sense cf. mod Icel. firni 'a great deal, a lot:' (Vigf): a huge quantity or number." The Icelandic derivation, of course, is consistent with the idea of moving mucho items out over the course of 17 hours. If we stick by the "Hannibal Lecter: The Early Years" subtext, then the "original" meaning is also appro- priate. Happy birthday, indeed, to Christine. Should anybody actually be fool enough to fly into Greenwich Village for a stash of blueberry juice, it might be a nice thing to do to fly out of Newark on the way home, thus placing you in Jersey for awhile and thus in a position to drop Christine off a quantity of the stuff, during the likely period of downtime on the PATH between there and her regular blueberry juice connection in lower Manhattan. At the moment, I am hard-pressed to think of a more practical birthday gift than that :-) :-). When I first saw the original "Koyaanisqaatsi" movie in 1983, I was struck by how at times, it seemed to be at cross-purposed with its own argument, by presenting scenes of urban life that were actually esthetic and lyrical, after it earlier presented images of urban dissonance, misery and vice. Go figure. WRT someone's query on the Benelux countries: These three adjacent lands were long referred to collectively as the "Low Countries" before the current generation of economic and political alliances began evolving in the '50s. Certainly their linguistic overlap would have brought them closer together in any event. The reference to Australasia evoked memories of a funny experience from my first year as a teaching assistant, back in 1974. My students in intro sociol- ogy were assigned to interpret the population pyramids (graphic representations of the age-sex structure) of various countries. Somebody wrote that the Baby Boom had been a going concern not only in the U.S., but in "Canada, Australia and New England [sic]." Next to which I wrote with my red pen, "A function of the former ban on contraceptives in Massachusetts?" Out of the minds of the young, I guess :-). Uli's lengthy observations on male and female singers have gotten me to wonder- ing if there are any sorts of systematic factors in the gender mix among the singers people like. My tastes have always been eclectic that way (and every other way), but I've always had a special attraction to female artists. I can remember when the beginnings of my now-mighty jumble of recordings featured the likes of Laura Nyro, Suzanne Vega, Rickie Lee Jones, et al., and one time short ly thereafter, I found new releases by U2, Sting and maybe one or two other men on sale. I found myself feeling twinges of moral obligation about acuir- ing them, in the sweet name of gender balance, quite apart from the fact that they were good albums that would have been of interest to me in any event. (Over a year or two after that, I found myself listening to an eclectic succ- ession of different albums, and somehow I found myself making a mental note of the idea that I was probably one of the few persons I knew who would listen to, and enjoy, the likes of Mick Jagger and Holly Near consecutively.) I'll have to remember to look for that Happy Peppermint stuff the next time I'm in the vicinity of the old German enclave around Lawrence and Lincoln. It would not surprise me if either the German deli or the German apothecary shop carry it on a regular basis. Ectophiles in Chitown should give thought to what stations could be in the running as outlets for Happy's music in general and the radio tour in partic- ular, over and above the usual suspects: WBEZ, WXRT, WFMT, WHPK, WNUR, WCBR, possible WDCB, and of course the one and only WZRD, flagship of the SiG Network . You'd not normally think of WKQX in this connection, but if they're having Tori live, then nothing is impossible. In fact one of my earliest musical memories is of learning how to use my father's reel-to-reel deck so I could listen to "Yellow Submarine" over and over. Eight-track tape, on the other hand, is not in common use anywhere as far as I know. > DAT DAT, digital audio tape > DCC Digital compact cassette tape > MD MiniDisc, CD-like optical disc These may be new, and Happy may not have anything available in these formats, but they do exist, although the chances of record companies coming out with prerecorded DATs looks smaller every day. Tori Amos is available on MiniDisc, and other bands have DCC tapes available now. >AA Australasia >BX BeNeLux These two "Country Codes" are marketing and manufacturing entities. Ofttimes records (and I use the term loosely) are manufactured and marketed solely for distribution within these regions. I distinctly remember wearing my ski-jacket in the morning, and shorts in the afternoon. That climate is so damp it gave me the heebee geebees. Not that New Haven is exactly the glamour capital of the world... every time I've been there it's been rainy and miserable. I forgot to mention that I thought 10KM were *super* on Arsenio last night. Natalie Merchant looked and sounded the best I've ever seen her (which includes a number of TV appearances but no live appearances). I will have to see them if they tour again. I also like the way she dances around and injects such energy into the performance. Has anyone else seen "The Temp?" I thought it was a great film... in the same vein as Basic Instinct. It also has a circuit which can give milliseconds of extra power for sharp sounds, over and above the normal amplification. The LED indicating this circuit is firing was going off every so often.
