This was the second time Enya's music has been used for the closing tune; the first time was "Carribean Blue" from last Spring (sometime in April, though I'm not positive; that was before I started writing air dates on my archives...;-) The music fit wonderfully with the visuals. Sort of the opposite of equipoise. What does >Powqaatsi mean? Powaqqatsi comes from the Hopi indian "powa" meaning sorcerer, and "qatsi" meaning life. The term describes an entity which lives off and absorbs other, weaker life forms. The message of the film seems to be describing how the Western world exploits and lives off the people of the developing world. My impressions of the film were that it was fairly good, but that Koyaanasqatsi was about ten times better. I remember coming out after seeing Koyaanasqatsi feeling somewhat stunned and awed, and certainly didn't feel the same about this one. Technically the photography and effects didn't seem as impressive, but were still very good. The images were more human and less building/lanscape oriented than in the previous film. The music seemed a little free-er less Philip Glassy, by which I mean that the rigid musical structures and mathematical progressions that tend to characterize PG's music weren't as predominant (whether this is a good or a bad thing is a matter of opinion). The main reason I felt it was inferior to Koyaanasqatsi hoswever was that it didn't do nearly as good a job of bringing across it's message. There was certainly a message there, but it just wasn't impressed on you in the same, extremely forceful way as that of Koyaanasqatsi. It just seemed alot weaker. Powaqqatsi is still worth seeing, especially with the live accompanyment, but it doesn't make it to the must-see-if-you-get-a-chance chategory that the first film was in. -Anthony ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 1 Mar 93 23:52:04 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: This is All So Amazing! > Hello Ecto! > Wow, the international scope of this board continues to amaze me! ^^^^^ Just FYI, not a flame, Ecto is a "list", a mailing list. > Hello Norway, The UK, Australia, and Denmark, and Canada! She's really looking forward to seeing all this and will print out sections for Happy to read. I offered to travel to NYC and install her modem, and she said OK, so hopefully I can get up there before long! She will then be "on the net"! (Well, once she connects to Jessica!:) ) One thing she asked me to ask all of you: Please request EQP material from your favorite station! Australasia is a group of countries, one of which is Australia. New Zealand is another one, and maybe Papua New Guinea? and maybe some islands. It's sometimes considered a continent or synonymous with Oceania, but I don't know whether that's true or not. BeNeLux is a mini-EC. It constitutes _Be_lgium, the _Ne_therlands, and _Lux_emburg. I dunno exactly what the implications are of this union, someone from there should have a better idea. Hope I'm not lying about any of this.
