I spotted their car (or what I hoped was their car) and walked up and introduced myself. Then we went inside the Econolodge, David got his room, we went up the 'Tartis' elevator (we weren't sure that this elevator actually moved until the final bump when we 'landed' at the fourth floor). We went to the room, dropped off our stuff, and went to hunt for something to eat. We found a carry-out chinese place, bought our food and came back to the hotel. While we were eating our scrumptious dinner Greg and Angelos arrived. We made some brief introductions and headed off to Greg's car to get his equipment - a milk crate full of stuff, and the vcr. Angelos brought his magic bag of canned caffeine, and chocolate covered expresso beans. :) A little later Jessica, Dave, and Woj came trotting in, and the introductions continued. We chatted for some time about various things none of which I can remember off hand. Then we went to the show. We all packed in Greg's station wagon - 3 in front, 3 in back, and Jessica and Woj in the way back. As we passed by QE2 I spied a woman who looked suspiciously like Vickie, Meredith also saw her and we kinda turned to each other and wondered out loud if indeed that's who we saw. We parked about half a block from QE2, got out, and I walked briskly back, and yeppers there was Vickie with a _very_ satisfied grin on her face. I was so happy to see her there...how could EctoMa miss Happy's opening performance.... Anyway we entered the seedy joint which sported a crowd of leather clad poofbongs (my nick for punked out people). They wouldn't let us in the back where Happy and crowd were setting up so we had to wait in the bar area. Finally we got to go to the back which held another bar, along with go-go cages and assorted chain link nightmares. There was a 2 ft. high chain link fence in front of the stage (in fairly sad shape). Mitch Elrod's opening which was interesting although everyone tends to agree that the first song just did not work. His lyrics were interesting...and extremely cynical. Without a cold, more practice, and some interesting back up musicians I think he would be an interesting artist. Anyway Happy was the highlight. As I was sitting right next to Vickie who was of course sitting 2 feet under Happy I had an excellent view of stage and of course Happy (although I tended to look more at the rest of the band or the floor just being too overwhelmed with the music at the time to also look at Happy). I did notice her fantastic above knee boots...very suave! The band was extremely fascinating to watch. With Happy and Kevin doing the winking flirtatious thing to one another, Ray grooving to his very groovy bass lines, Martha with her flamboyant style of playing (more visible in Philly i think) and low backing vocals, Mark playing with almost the lightest touch i've ever seen, and Kelly belting out in her strong backing voice I was thoroughly in my equivalent of heaven. I was blown away by the sheer power and tightness of the band. While Happy's vocals arn't that powerful (meaning loudness not "power power") she managed to convey a sense of urgency and emotion that swept through the place - if you were so inclinded to notice it in the first place. Obviously very proud of her self (as she should be) she kept staring into the mirrors which were to the right of her (left of us). I wonder what she was thinking when she was looking at herself dancing in the mirror (gawd damn I can't believe im actually up here singing....??!??) Her 'dancing' very mime like moves reminded me of some Kate moves in Hammersmith - however they were completely Happy. I swear she actually pulled some of her demons out while on stage - simply incredible. From her pulling out the parasites right down to the bat-dance (which was missing in PHilly :( ) she bopped around with style and grace. Some of her expressions were priceless....i only hope I captured some of them in Vickie's camara which I was practically sticking in Happy's face :) The concert was simply amazing. I started out just sitting in the chair, then bouncing wildly on the chair - quite literally I thought the thing was going to fall over I was gigling so much...and by the end I seriously wanted to dance around in sheer delight. Her reworks of the 1st4 are masterpieces...better than the originals. One of my favi's Perfect Irony was excellent...no, absolutely breath-taking. This woman is truly a genius. After the show I was in a state of exhaustion mixed with a kind of post-rush delirium. It was like being in a heightened frame of mind for three hours, and then suddenly you are back on earth - intense is the best word I can think to describe the whole concert. (not the only best word however :) ). I kinda hung back while everyone chatted with Happy...but I went outside where Vickie was chatting with Kelly telling us some of the stories about the new songs. One of the new songs (well actually 3 are along a similar vein) is about a vampire who has to give his immortality up to be with the woman he loves...and how the woman must thrust the stake through.. i think (Vickie do you remember exactly what she said). Anyway Kelly spoke of the intense emotions Happy was trying to put in the song about what the vampire was feeling...his struggle with his love, or his life - really astonishing. I have to admit the new songs 'power' didn't hit me til Philly, but they are simply beautiful, haunting, wonderful...I can't wait for the new album :) After the show we went back to David's. I was completely zoning by this time....we chatted, listened to Woj's tape, everyone left, and I finally went to sleep...got up the next day not being able to wait til Philly...which will follow shortly.. kIrI 'in ninth heaven today - oh blissful delight' :) oh yeah...thanks to Vickie for letting me crash in her room...if I to drive back I quite literally would've died....so thanks! :) -- "When pain no longer rips Kirstin Ann Hargie (kIrI) you might see me hargieka@craft.camp.clarkson.edu like a flickering flame iamecto@chinet.chi.il.us waving to you "Experience the other side" thru the crack in the wall" L.L. hApPy RhOdEs ======================================================================== From: xenox!inphobos!ectoparty@horga.ruhr.de Date: Sun, 29 Mar 92 20:35 MEZ Subject: goodbye all for 3 weeks From: ectoparty@inphobos.w.open.de (Courtney Dallas) Message-ID: Date: Sun, 29 Mar 92 21:35:12 GMT Organization: Ectophiles Unlimited, Wuppertal, Germany the Cat here.. Vickie handed me seven tapes (well, the story's a little longer than that, but I'll leave it at that) for my tape duping operation. The following post will have ordering instructions and a listing of the contents. In brief, the tapes include the WXPN interview, five Suspended in Gaffa "collections" Vickie put together specifically for you all, and a tape of one of her Suspended in Gaffa shows (editted down to 90min, though it includes Vickie's talking and other radio announcements). I've listened to all seven tapes, while making my own copies to use for copying. Vickie definitely had fun putting together the five collections, as they contain a number of interesting touches. The contents range from the beautiful to the strange, the old to the new, artists from the well-known to the obscure, quite an eclectic collection. I enjoyed listening to it, hearing some artists I've seen mentioned on Gaffa and Ecto, but not heard before. A number of surprises popped up, but none more surprising to me than a cover of a relatively obscure Nilsson song! (By the way, does anyone remember who did the original version of "Beware of Darkness" that Concrete Blonde covers? It's been driving me up the wall for days now!) If you respect Vickie's musical taste or are curious about the wide range of female vocalists, check this out, even if it does mean more work for me! By the way, with seven tapes (and my tape order not yet here), things may move a little slow at first, so be patient. I will keep Ecto informed of my progress. Glad to hear the Ecto-party went so well, and I hope you all survived it! :) My Philly report should be posted tomorrow, ready to bust mailboxes! Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 30 Mar 92 08:22:10 MST From: dbx@ventana.atmos.colostate.edu (Doug Burks) Subject: Tapes Greetings, Finally, here is the official announcement for the dbx tape dubbing operation. During my Happy vacation, Vickie gave me seven tapes to start with. If you want any or all of these tapes, here are the instructions. Three methods of getting the tapes are available: 1) Establish a cassette account with me. In other words, send me a check to cover the cost of cassettes, packaging, and postages. Put in as much as you want, not necessarily just to cover a single order (though you can do that, too). Then anytime that you want a cassette in the future, you would just e-mail me, and I can get things out to you as soon as possible without you having to mail me anything. In this case, I would dip into my own supply of chrome cassettes which I've ordered in bulk (Thanks, Mitch!). The cost is $1.20 per tape, plus $0.50 - 1.00 for packaging, plus postage from $0.98 for one tape to $5.12 (best guess) for all seven. Foreign postage will obviously be higher. Accounts can be opened or closed at any time. Put in as much as you want, as more tapes should be added to the original seven. [I plan to check if I can handle foreign checks or not.] 2) Establish a cassette account, as in 1, except that I will purchase the type of tape you specifically request. Obviously the cost of the tape will be higher, though the packaging and postage will be the same. 3) Send me the cassettes you want to put the music on (C-90) along with money to cover packaging and return postage. I will copy the tapes you request and return them. Consider opening an account, as it will save you having to mail an order, let alone the cassettes. Orders will be processed in the order I get them, with special dispensation for foreign orders. My mailing address: Doug Burks, 2036 West Plum Street C7, Fort Collins CO 80521 USA If I make any mistakes, I will replace the tape for free. A printed copy of the tape contents will be included with every order. I intend to post a progress report on the dubbing operation regularly. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! The initial offering includes seven (count 'em, seven!) tapes. The contents of these seven follows with each line holding the artist, song title, and album title. Footnotes (noted by brackets []) are at the bottom of the full list. Most of the comments are Vickie's. If anyone has any corrections, please tell me, so that this list can be kept accurate. >>>>> World Cafe interview Side A Happy Rhodes Feed the Fire live in studio Happy Rhodes Given In live in studio Happy Rhodes Words Weren't Made for Cowards live in studio World Cafe interview with the songs, though in the order "Feed the Fire", "Words Weren't Made for Cowards", and "Given In".
