I just wanted to put in a little message to Albert....What music by the Blackgirls do you have? I saw them in concert a week and a half ago at the Wetlands in NYC. They're wonderful...scary, but wonderful... I'm off to catch my train! Keep Smiling! I just want to tell you that I am feeling so happy. I'm so happy, it's disgusting. I listened to Suspended in Ecto last night, and again this morning. When I hear Happy and Vickie talk, their voices give me chills (very good ones indeed). You can hear they love each other (at least I can). I love it when they are having fun. I really feel like giving you all a HUG, yuck yuck. I'm ready for the funnyfarm now. Vickieeeeeeee!!!!!!! (If I say it loud enough, she will hear me, eventually.) How could you even think that I am capable of such a cruelty as to record over your talking during Friend You'll Be?!? (I hope none of you has even considered doing this. If you did, may Alice invade your dreams!!!) Someone should thank Happy for me, for releasing When The Rain Came Down for Suspended in Ecto, and a lot of other things... Albert "ohmygod, what's happening to me" Philipsen -- Doesn't anybody know how it feels Just to let your spirit soar ======================================================================== Subject: PHILLY!!!! Date: Sun, 22 Mar 92 11:06:46 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Yes, Meredith was right, the Philly show was "fuckin' awesome." Incredible. Mindblowing. Astounding. Spellbinding. "Magical" to use a vickieism. I can't really provide a set list because I was too dumbfounded to try to remember the order things were played in. I think I can provide a list of songs though. Wrong Century (opening number) Poetic Justice (I think this was #2) (now my memory gets fuzzy...;-) Feed the Fire Given In Off From Out From Under Me Would That I Could Oh the Drears Where Do I Go? Possessed The Perfect Irony 'Til the Dawn Breaks The Issue Is Murder The Wretches Gone Awry I'm Not Awake, I'm Not Asleep Phobos Lay Me Down All Things (Mia Ia Io) Words Weren't Made For Cowards Let Me Know, Love Ode Don't Want to Hear It In Hiding (encore 1) Warpaint (encore 2) *and* Mother Sea He Will Come The Flight which are absolutely mindblowingly incredible new songs. As a general rule, the new arrangements of songs from the 1st4 were great; not necessarily better than the original recordings, but certainly complementary (and complimentary!); the songs were fleshed out for the whole band. I was a bit disappointed with "Would That I Could"; Greg Bossert told me that it was performed better in Albany. The one song from the 1st4 that I thought was superior to the original version was "Where Do I Go?" The new arrangement is incredibly intense and I'm dying to get a copy of it. In a somewhat similar vein, "Murder," which always left me a bit cold on _Warpaint_, got a serious boost in its live incarnation. Speaking of getting copies, Greg footah!'d the show--in fact, he has the only recording of it. Bob Leonard, Happy's soundman was supposed to bring a DAT recorder, but forgot it. Of course, we have no guarantee that Greg's copy came out well, but we'll find out soon enough! The band: Happy has surrounded herself with a group of very talented musicians, all of whom have a deep respect for her talent. Obviously we all know who Kevin is. He turned out to be very dynamic on stage, playing a variety of instruments (keyboards, steinberger electric guitar, 12 string electric guitar, and 12 string acoustic, and electronic drum pads). Mark Jordan (I believe; I could be misremembering his name) played acoustic and electronic drums, and was quite impressive. It was nice to see that the electronc drums were manually triggered instead of sequenced. In fact, I don't know if anything was sequenced in the entire show; if there was any, it was minimal. Fretted and fretless bass was played by Ray Jung ("We love you, Ray!"), who has had experience with a wider range of musicians, having played with people such as Bill Bruford (of Yes and King Crimson). The second set of keyboards, as well as BVs, were handled by Martha Waterman. You may recognize her name--she played piano on the studio version of "In Hiding." Martha's voice is nothing great, but she can sing on key and was able to add some depth to the harmonies. And finally, BVs were handled quite admirably by Kelly Bird (Byrd?). She was able to blend beautifully with Happy's voice so that at times it actually sounded like Happy was multitracked. Kelly is a great singer, but she doesn't have a particularly distinctive voice--as Greg put it, she could probably make a comfortable living singing backup, but couldn't make it on lead vocals. There's lots more to say about the show, the people, the after-show party, the pre-show ecto party, and so on, but I think it's time to let someone else take over...;-) Many thanks to Mark Carroll for providing floor space to 6 or 7 of us, and to Stephen Golden for generally helping out with Philly plans. On my way back to my dorm, I saw Happy and the band at my local WaWa Food Market (a convenient store/ deli). I only wish I had my camera! 2) Vickie is staying with me tonight in my dorm room. The DJ said, "[insert name of some other XPN DJ who wasn't Mike Morrisson] just called in to report on the Happy Rhodes concert last night. [s/he] said it was great, and that Happy Rhodes received several standing ovations." The DJ then played "In Hiding." As that was only the second time I'd heard Happy on the radio--the first being on Saturday, when ectophiles called and requested her--it was pretty durned exciting. b) Here's a bit of a trivia question for Philly concert-goers: Happy flubbed a line in a song. What song was it, and which line? Oh--one more thing... Happy has a really cool way of moving around on stage. After the show, at the party, I heard someone (a non-ectophile, obviously) ask, "Your movements on stage were really interesting. Do you own any cats?" Happy wasted no time saying that she has three of 'em...;-) Jeff |Jeffrey C. I got up this morning still in a daze from all the Ecto festivities yesterday. Meredith summed it up perfectly.....it *was* fucking awesome! I'm just so incredibly overwhelmed by Happy and her music that I am literally a babbling idiot about it today. Lotsa heavy sighs too. I shot 2 rolls of film at the concert. Hopefully we'll get a few good ones and I'll be more than happy to get duplicate prints made for all interested. It was really great getting to meet all of you that came even if for some it was only a brief exchange of hello. It was fun putting faces to the names. Thanks for all the birthday wishes. This is one birthday I'll never forget. I was talking with someone on the phone this morning about everything that went on and they said - "How old are you today?" I said "41". They said, "Aren't you getting a little too old for this kind of thing?" I just laughed... Shit, I hope I'm still doing this at 70. I'm sorry I didn't bring my 13 year old daughter yesterday. She *loves* Warpaint (her friends think she's "weird"), and I know she would have loved all of you. I told her "Next time..I promise" Bye for now....Bob Brown BTW - Helloooo Jessica....if you get more shirts made pleeeeze put me down for an extra large. Jessica, in addition to running the mailing list, keeps an archive of various Ecto stuff, including old digests, GIFs of album covers (including the GIF that appears on the Ecto t-shirts), and all of the various lyrics. If you have access to FTP, you can access the archives at hardees.rutgers.edu Once connected, type cd pub/hr which will put you in the Ecto directory. Once there you can check out the various subdirectories, including lyrics. The full path to the lyrics is pub/hr/lyrics/albums, and there are files for each of the 5 albums. If you don't have FTP access, let me know and I'll e-mail you the lyrics.
