The reason I ask is, I need a ride to the concert, I can drive to jessica's, but I really don't want to drive to philadelphia. >From the last couple of posts, it sounds like all the car pooling arrangements have already been chosen. Anyhow, what other rutgers people are going to the concert? Any open seats? Barry ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 11 Mar 92 10:56:53 EST From: dtorok@nynexst.com Subject: Philly Directions Jeff asked for directions to Philadelphia. Well, I went to Penn for my undergrad career (and Stephen Golden is there now, for some reason!) so here are my driving impressions. If you need train directions, let me know! ---------------------------------------- Directions to Philadelphia (and the University Museum) from The North. Take the New Jersey Turnpike south to exit 3. After the toll, bear right onto rt. 168 West. About 1 mile later (after a couple of traffic lights and zillions of fast-food places and liquor stores), take a jughandle onto I-295 South (it's the 2nd "jughandle" the first will send you north.) You have about a mile to get into one of the left two lanes, which will careen you towards the Walt Whitman Bridge. You are now on I-676 North, and will need to be in the leftmost lane to get onto the bridge. The bridge toll is 90 cents, and exact change helps speed you along. After the bridge toll, you are on 76 West. Stay on 76 West and take the South St. Exit, about 5 miles from the bridge. (it's a LEFT exit, after the "university ave" exit.). ***At the light take a LEFT onto South St. You are now entering U of P, with the stadium on the right. The University Museum is on the left. NOTE: South St. turns into Spruce St. at 33rd St. PARKING: Good luck. "Best bets" for street parking is to turn right on 33rd St (after the stadium) and cruise up, Walnut St is also a possibility. Paid parking within a block of the Museum (and relatively safe) is the Penn Tower Hotel garage. After turning left onto Spruce St., take the first traffic light left (this is before the museum). Follow this road around and you will see the garage on the right. There are other paid lots around as well. ---------------------------------------- Directions From the South If you go over the Delaware Mem. Bridge, you can follow essentially the same directions as above, providing at exit 3 you get onto rt. 168 going west If you are coming from 95 North (through Wilmington, De, etc.), as you pass the Phila. Airport, follow the signs "To 76 West, Central Phila.". To this, you will take a right exit off of 95, a right exit off the service road, and a left-fork onto a bridge (the signs are pretty well-marked.) After crossing the bridge there will be a traffic light - turn left. The wondrous sight of oil tanks and refineries will be on your left. This road will dump you onto 76-West, and it'll be about 2 miles to the South St. exit - see *** above. Here's a University-City area map: S=Stadium, M=Univ. Museum, P=Penn Tower/Parking NOTE: 34th St. is one-way south, 33rd St. is one-way north. Spruce/south is two-way Chestnut st. -----oneway>>>--------------+-----+--------------------- ||||| Walnut St. |<-34 |<-33rd st. /\ || -----<<Dave<$=- ======================================================================== Date: 11 March 1992 11:07:10 CST From: Subject: Yet another quick one (somewhat, at least by my standards) I checked in the Phonolog at Rose Records this morning, which lists a fair number of Jean Redpath albums on the Philo label. Rose didn't have any on the shelf at the time, and another store I looked in yesterday had only one, so it wouldn't surprise me if retail access is sporadic. They might flow more freely from Roundup Records in Cambridge MA (I think, but am unsure, that their mailing address is Box 154, North Cambridge 02140). Rose now has an 800 number (800-955-ROSE), from which this stuff probably can be ordered fairly easily as well. The album I saw in the other store was called "Leaving the Land." The aria on HGP that Beth was wondering about was the "Flower Duet" (I think), whose composer I have forgotten, but is listed in ecto postings deal- ing with HGP content. (It was contributed by Jorn, who should also know). I don't know (but Rose Records might) if there's a soundtrack album for _I've Heard the Mermaids Singing_, but the flower duet may be best known to the U.S. masses as the background music in the British Airways commercials. Favorite Ecto music seems to be diffusing thru the culture. Last week, I went to a dance concert, where the music played before the dances included Thomas Dolby's "I Scare Myself." The other day, I happened to catch a Dead Can Dance number (I forget which one) on a college station that I can't nor- mally get. Yesterday evening, WXRT played a good song which (unusually) I felt the irresistable impulse to get the name of when it wasn't backannounced. I had to try several times, through many rings, before they answered their phone, but it turned out to be something on the order of "From a Million Miles," by Single Gun Theory. I am pleased to recommend it to you. Free the seals! Free Beth (to whom I am pleased to yield the franchise on long posts for the moment :-) )! Free the Newfoundland economy! Free Vickie's computer! Martin here. I had my first ecto-dream! A few days ago... I must have just drifted back to sleep after that pesky alarm had gone off again :-) I dreamt everyone from Ecto were having a little get-together in Vickie's apartment. I guess it was kinda like the one at the end of HGP vol II, but we were ALL there. I remember that each one of us had brought a plate or bowl of some specially home-made food, and we were sharing it around. Some of it was real wierd but all of it was great. I remember trying some blue egg-shaped cake things and some kind of really curly corn-chips... The only people I remember identifying individually were Jessica (easier now I've seen her picture), Kiri, Vickie, Meredith and Mitch. I have no idea why only these people, or why all but Mitch were female. Don't bother asking me what I thought you looked like... all I can remember is an impression of your respective somatypes... and that Mitch had a short- cropped black beard.... ah well. Meanwhile Vickie (who reminded me of a favourite aunty of mine down in Esperance) was demonstrating how she made the HGP, and was recreating the experience for us by wiring herself physically into a huge mass of electronics along one wall (Yes, "wired into gaffa central" is definitely a memorable little phrase) until she was almost entirely covered in wires and tape and gunk (gaffa?) I remember seeing everyone in the room from her perspective... which was now MY perspective,... then I woke up when a bird rammed my window. The next ten minutes is another story in itself, but I thought the dream was really interesting... can anyone here draw some psychic connections from it? (Is Happy Rhodes fantastic? :-) :-) BTW, I found a new word in my dictionary today. (New for me, anyhow) recto - the right hand pages of a book. Vickie has reminded me that the article in _Buzz_ mentions ecto, as well as happy in general. Vishal seems to let on less than he really knows in his alt.music.altern- ative post. Is this a ploy to draw the lay reader in, or what? Today's Chicago Tribune reviews Alison Moyet's concert the other night. Barry ======================================================================== From: golden@eniac.seas.upenn.edu (Stephen "Jokey" Golden) Subject: Philly Pre-Concert Fans Date: Thu, 12 Mar 92 16:07:05 EST Well, everyone, I guess it is time to start making those Philly pre-concert plans. I know it's been discussed mildly, how about coming to a decision? Being at Penn, and living just blocks away from the Museum, I think our best food choice would be Eden which is located at 37th and Chestnut (See Dave Torok's map). The museum is 33rd and Spruce/South. Spruce is just three short blocks away from Chestnut. It would take about 10-15 minutes to walk from Eden to the Museum. I am sure we all want to have good seats right up front. So I think this should decide the pre-concert meeting time. And starting time for those of us driving from FAAAR away. b) How many tickets have been sold? If it is almost sold out, then this strengthens the argument of question (a). Is this a 'real' amphitheater? Is there space for standing in front of the stage? Or are there only REAL seats? c) Whatever happened to the possibility for a second show? Is this show being promoted at all? Are there any posters, etc around town? (If the answer is yes, could some kind soul rip one off the walls for me? :-)) I think I have asked enough questions for now.... :-) I hope Stephen or Bob Brown (are you still there? How was Boston?) can answer at least some of these!!
