Hi all.. I would have to say that "Wrong Century" is one of my least favorites from Warpaint. I also think that it's the male vocal in the song that is the reason. I do like the tempo of the song during the verses, and of course I like the main vocal. I've never gotten fully into "All Things" or "Murder" either. I still like them, though! There isn't any Happy song that I really DISlike.. For the longest time "The Issue Is" did nothing for me. It even annoyed me a little. After hearing the live version, however, the song has finally clicked with me and it's one of my favorites from Rearmament. Sometimes the sound of the synthesizers from the early albums bothers me. Of course I understand that Happy was doing her best with the equipment she had access to. My least favorite Happy songs (in case anyone is interested!) also include: "I'll Let You Go"-(kind of repetitive) "The Flaming Threshold" (even after hearing this many times I still can't remember it. Maybe it will grow on me someday) "Beat It Out" (possibly my very least favorite) "Box H.A.P." (annoying synthesizers and repetitive) "Dreams Are" (I like the overall sound of this one, but it doesn't hold my attention for some reason) "To Be E. Mortal" (I would like this a lot better if it were shorter, same with "He's Alive"). Now I kind of feel bad after talking about the songs that aren't my favorite, so I think I'll list my current top favorites.. :) 1)Feed the Fire (this song is just wonderful) 2)Possessed (I LOVE the guitar and the lyrics!) 3)Would That I Could (beautiful melody that suits the lyrics perfectly) 4)Given In (This didn't grab me much at first, but I sure love it now) 5)The Flight (same as #4.. Love the arrangement) 6)Come Here (because it gives me the creeps..) :) and Wretches Gone Awry, and Look For The Child, and Closer, and Temporary & Eternal, and Out Like A Lamb, and In Hiding, and The First To Cry, and To Live In Your World, and Ode, and Waking Up, and Phobos, and Rainkeeper, and Warpaint.. OK, OK I'll stop.. I don't see why y'all hate it. You must suck or something. (tee hee.. just kidding obviously) But really, I *like* Wrong Century, complete with the goofball background sound effects. But it still pales next to the always chilling "In Hiding" which still sends shivers up and down my spine. Ah well, there's no accounting for taste. Well, I suppose that may be true, and may also be due to the larger presence of males in the industry in general (which appears to be waning). However, let me see if I can site some examples of women that do not necessarily fit the "rocker" image. Keep in mind that some of these may qualify as "looking" like a rock star to some but not others (i.e. Siouxsie Sioux). Let's see: Siouxsie Sioux (Siouxsie and the Banshees) Laurie Anderson Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) Sheryl Crow Suzanne Vega Natalie Merchant (formerly of 10,000 Maniacs) Melissa Etheridge Kirsty MacColl (maybe) Toni Halliday (?) (Curve) Loreena McKennitt Kate Bush Tori Amos Sarah MacLachan Enya Maire Brennan (Clannad) (Pronounced Moya, please excuse the Anglified spelling) Bonnie Raitt Celine Dion Sade Patti Smith (of Patti Smith Group, not Smythe of Scandal) Tina Turner (maybe) Amy and Emily (Indigo Girls) K.D. Lang (not exactly rock, but has had some crossover success) Toyah Wilcox (anyone know what she's been up to lately?) to name a few. Well, enough of that. Interesting list. I was hoping somebody might offer up something like this. My initial reaction is that some of these artists --the ones I have double starred (**) below-- could easily be sold to the _mainstream_ based on their looks alone. (I don't know all of them, so I can't comment on Siouxsie Sioux, Sheryl Crow, etc.) Also, I wonder if ANY of these women compare to groups like Los Lobos, or, damn, who are those guys from Australia(?) who do the song "500 miles"? > Siouxsie Sioux (Siouxsie and the Banshees) > Laurie Anderson > Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) > Sheryl Crow > Suzanne Vega > Natalie Merchant (formerly of 10,000 Maniacs)** > Melissa Etheridge > Kirsty MacColl (maybe) > Toni Halliday (?) Could there EVER be a female Meat Loaf? or (brace yourself)... Would we all be so enamored of Tori Amos if she looked like Rhea Perlman? Uh oh. I might have just gotten myself in BIG trouble. I love trying to apply AACR2R to rock albums. I mean, what do you do with something like REM's _Fables of the Reconstruction_ which is named either _Fables of the Reconstruction_ or _Reconstruction of the Fables_ depending on what part of it you read. What about Pearl Jam's _Vs_, which doesn't actually include the title of the album anywhere on any of the packaging (including the primary source for music, the actual label on the recording media). For that matter, what about CDs where the media has, say, a nice shade of mauve silkscreened onto it, but absolutely no text whatsoever? We won't even get into questions of corporate authorship. Jeff (whose copy of AACR2R has been sealed away in a locker on campus since December '93, with no current plans for release) ======================================================================== Subject: Re: Seeking opinions... Actually, I was reading an interview with her recently in (I think) _Hot Press_ and she talked about the issue of her weight. She feels her recent lack of success has been partially due to her appearance. She said that if you are a woman in popular music, the male critics and rock journalists don't pay any attention to you if they don't have fantasies of sleeping with you. It was a rather interesting little article where she also talked about her recent bouts of depression. I wish I had it in front of me, but I read it in a bookstore and never bothered to buy it. Hi! This discussion is getting more amusing by the minute. :> Jeffy, I too thought Johnette Napolitano was one of the Ramones, when I saw her in the "Joey" video. Of course, I already knew what she looked like from previous videos, and my first comment was, "Johnette, babe, LOSE THE HAIR!" She really isn't *that* bad looking... she's not a supermodel by any means, but she couldn't haunt any houses, either. For that category, I refer thee Chrissie Hynde. A female Meat Loaf? Um... Mama Cass? Janis Joplin? Heart (take your pick)? I'm not one to comment on Kim Gordon, but I know for a fact that there are at least two once and future ectophiles lurking around here who think she is quite Yummy (tm). Thurston certainly must. Kim Deal? (Or, for that matter, Kelley?) I refer thee again to the Chrissie Hynde category. These women aren't where they are because they're providing wanking 14-year-olds across the world with shower masturbation material, that's for sure. The question about whether Tori would be where she was if she looked like Rhea Perlman is like the question that gets raised over on .gaffa annually about Would Kate Bush Be Where She Is If She Looked Like A Dog? I can't answer that question, but speaking for myself, it doesn't matter. It doesn't hurt that I *really* enjoy having posters of Kate/Tori/Sarah hanging on my bedroom walls, but I would worship the music of these women if I didn't want to have any posters there. It's the music that introduced me to them -- I was a Katefan for months before I knew what she looked like (so I had dubs of the albums at first, go away, I eventually bought them all for myself :P). It was a fringe benefit that her appearance was to me as beautiful as her voice, nothing more. Same with Tori, same with Sarah. But that's speaking only from a Rabid Fan (tm) perspective. From an A&R perspective, yeah, it does matter. The record industry (read: big labels here) is still an old-boys network, and the bottom line is, the most successful artists are the ones who are selling multi-millions of records to wanking 14-year-olds and on up. In their minds, if you have two women singers side by side, and one is drop-dead gorgeous with a pretty voice and the other is ordinary looking with an incredible voice, chances are the drop-dead gorgeous one with the pretty voice is going to get signed, because she'll sell more records with her videos. Since society is wired that way, that's the way it goes, the downward self- perpetuating spiral. This is gradually changing, as the Chrissie Hyndes and Polly Harveys (good goddess, I forgot to mention her- she could haunt a 48-room house) and Kim/ Kelley Deals of the world show. But as "big" as they might be in their own circles, they still ain't no Mariah Carey. And anybody checked out Mariah's angelic visage lately? Case closed.
