For anyone who hasn't seen this show, it's one of the better music shows in the UK. If you can put up with the extremely annoying presenters (apart from Smiler, who is a great comedian), they have a very diverse range of music. The interviews are generally pretty naff though, so I wouldn't hold out much hope there. Most of the bands get one song, apart from the featured band (this week was Arrested Development) who open and close the show. I'll be in Helsinki unfortunately next Wednesday, so I'll miss it! However, I do believe it is repeated at some god forsaken hour over the weekend. If not, some London-based person might be good enough to tape it for me?? And if there is someone out there with the right connections, get Tori on the next series of Jools Holland's 'Later'. It'd be the perfect show for her! More on the Emily Bezar thread, from a new fan/email correspondent, First, in case any one is wonddering, her last name is pronounced BEE - zar....I may be the only one who wasn't sure of this....I emailed her, and D^2, and received corroborative responses. The pronounciation of her name was important to me because I'd just received a copy of her CD from her, for the station I "work" at, and didn't want to get her name wrong on the air. I was fortunate enought to gether CD at home, on the Saturday prior to my show, and to have the whole weekend to listen to it. Likewise, I kept it int he CD player at work all day, Monday.....This was all in prepe for my Monday night show. I played ca. 1/2 of the CD (not straight through) throughout the show, and then :( had to place it in the "incoming" bin at the station (One of the most difficult things I've had to do, recently, for now I'm without a copy....Though I'll definitely be ordering one very soon). I "reviewed" it as follows, on the small stickers we put on the jewel boxes, at WHUS: BEE-zar: Lush, theatrical vocals w/ piano, synth, samples. Compare Kate Bush at your own risk! It's great, and unlike anything I've ever heard before. Uhhhh....I'm not particularly verbal, right now, so I'll save any further comments for a more coherent time. Some of you may remember that I had in my possession a version of Tori's "silent all these years" sung in cantonese, by a famous Hong Kong pop singer named Faye Wong. For those of you who don't, I'll describe the song: "Unbelievable!"... I've played it for about 10 people, and half of them thought it *WAS* tori singing in Cantonese (since I didn't tell them what it was until after the song was over!). Anyway, I sampled it at 12kHz, stereo, and saved it to a file. Compressed, it's 3.5mb. Uncompresed, it's about 6mb. I would like to make it available to the general public. The file format is .VOC, but if someone convinces me that this format is non-standard and I shoudl convert it to another specific format, I will. The thing is, I need an ftp site to upload this file to. It was a very odd setting. THe stage must have been at least 20 feet high, and the closest the crowd could get was about 10 feet. Not like I was there, but it just looked kind of funny to see the band performing and yet so distant from the people around them. Behind the stage, was a series of hills and valleys. Another strange sight, shifting your eyes slightly off the band to see hundreds of condos peppering the hillside. Plus, there was the carnival, with bungee jumping and elephant rides visible around the stage. At one point Chrissie Hynde invited us to join them all for an elephant ride after the show! Weird setting aside, the show was fantastic! It featured only a few songs from the new album, with liberal doses of Pretenders I, a bit of II, lots of LEarning to Crawl and the hit from Get CLose. Amazingly enough, Chrissie was mixed way in front of the band, sometimes obscuring the other instruments. Not quite ideal, but far superior to having the singer lost in the mix. Her voice sounded amazing. Smooth, and cool, and tough and sexy. They seemed to be having a great time, and she joked around a lot and sang fantastically. On Brass in Pocket, she skipped a few lines, letting the crowd proclaim her style and sassy while she demonstrated it. It was kind of odd watching the show end at 9, just as it started to get dark, but that was the music curfew given the location. I think this may be the end of the tour, but I'd certainly recommend seeing them if they pop up in your town. Anyone have any comments on the new album? (This was night 2 of the fair. Can you believe they dug up Loverboy for opening night! Ugh) And the fair had lots of fine things too. A barn full of incredibly pregnant cows, a giant pig with 20 adorable little piglets, and a barn full of sheep, all baa-ing and bleating on different notes, making a crazy chorus. My personal favorite was the one I dubbed the yodeling sheep, as it was the only one not to baa exactly the same way on exactly the same note. It tended to go haaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaa baaaaaaaaa - baaaaaaaaaa- And on that note.... ======================================================================== From: ezust@iro.umontreal.ca Date: Fri, 17 Jun 1994 13:47:44 -0400 Subject: cd browsing I just did some CD shopping and saw the following which I thought might be of interest: Kate Bush: This Woman's Work - EXTENDED edition volumes 1 and 2 volume 1 has bonus tracks of Rocket Man and Candle in the Wind volume 2 has rubberband girl each one is sold separately for C$50.00 here. I first heard of Happy Rhodes on alt.music.enya and being a curious person I decided to go to the biggest CD store in Stockholm for a listen. To my surprise they didn't have ANY of her CDs :( but they told me they could import them for me. BUT I'll have to pay $25 per CD!! That's VERY much money for a poor student like myself... Well, I went back to school and found to a sampled version of "Ecto", I absolutely LOVED it!! I then decided to import "Rhode Songs" after reading in a review that this should be the perfect CD to get in to her music, I haven't recieved it yet, though (it's only been some five or six weeks since I ordered it :( ). However one of my friends are going to the USA on the 19th this month and she's told me that she'll look for and buy Happy's CDs for me if I like her to. I don't know how much I'll have to pay for them but I'm PRETTY sure it's not as much as $25... And now for the questions: * How much is a CD in Los Angeles? * Which of Happy's CDs should I tell her to get for me? All of them (this is a once in a lifetime opportunity) or perhaps just one or two (or none at all). Please respond ASAP... /Tommy and, by the way... Coincidentally, I encountered Chris and Vickie (whose time on the net has been disrupted by phone glitches the past few days), who had come for the same purpose. I generally liked this film, though not nearly as much as other films. I can see why many others didn't, though. If you haven't read the book, thus enab- ling you to fill in a lot of things mentally, the whole film comes across kind of disjointed. Much of the book is description, as opposed to action/dialog, which wouldn't translate well to a 2-hour film; so a lot of the material was simply cut out for the film. They might have done a better job if they had made the book into a miniseries, with more time to deal with that which didn't lend itself well to compression. Chris also thought that Rain Phoenix was miscast as Bonanza Jellybean. He may be right; she's not the first one I would have visualized in the role. On the other hand, Victoria Williams' perform- ance in a relatively small role was quite good. Chicago readers of these pages may be interested to know that Vagabond Music, across the street from the Biograph, is having a $2-off sale, for an open-ended period, on CD's whose full price is above $10.98. Both Vagabond and the Bio- graph, btw, carry _The Lumpen Times_, a free magazine for which Jorn (remember him? :-) ) now writes a computer column. _All Things Considered_ will be doing a feature on Chicago folkie Michael Smith either Saturday or Sunday. Happy birthday to Albert, Neal, Tracy, and, of course, Ecto. And, of course, happy Father's Day. Mitch ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 17 Jun 1994 23:35:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: is she still pissing in the river now Hi! I give up. Saw Tori Amos in New York City last night, and the audience was WORSE than the two previous times on this tour. The people right behind me did NOT stop talking and laughing (quite loudly) for the entire show, even during "Me And A Gun". No matter how many times I turned to glare at them or other people told them to shut up, they just kept chattering away. Then there was the guy up in the balcony who started screaming during "Silent All These Years". I mean SCREAMING, and suddenly there was a commotion and people around him were screaming too -- scared-screaming, not "we-love- you-Tori" screaming. Tori stopped playing, and asked, "Is everybody all right up there?" At first I thought somebody had been stabbed up there, or maybe the guy had a gun and was going to shoot Tori or something -- who could tell? Tori was obviously quite concerned. She had them bring the house lights up and tried her best to shush the rest of the crowd, who was continuing their incessant catcalls et al. ("Relax, you'll get another song to make up for this.") She kept asking, "Is everybody okay up there?" until she finally got a chorus of "Yes" from the balcony, and said, "Okay. Lights down." and picked up "SATY" right where she'd left off. Let no one say Tori's not a professional... I still don't know what happened up there, but it was scary, and not conducive to concertgoing enjoyment. Neither were the constant calls of "I love you Tori!", "You've got a cute butt!" (to which she replied, "You don't know my butt."), or the fact that every time she performed a flourish on the piano or her voice rose even slightly into the upper registers, the entire crowd went into hysterics. Every single goddamn time. Tori's performance itself was actually the best of the three times I've seen her on this tour -- she actually seemed to be having fun, goddess only knows why. Song selection was better in New Haven, but last night we did get "Happy Phantom", "Angie", "American Pie/Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "A Case Of You"! (It must have been Cover Night. :) She ended the main set this time with "Bells For Her", which really worked. And we did get our extra song: she came out for a third encore and performed a heart-rending version of "Baker Baker". That song is ***powerful*** live! It doesn't work for me on the record at all, but to see the look on her face when she sings the "Time... thought I'd made friends with time" line causes indescribable feelings to well up in me, it's amazing. She told a different story before "Icicle": when she was little she was in the Nativity pageant at Christmastime, and like every other little girl she wanted to be an angel, so she could wear a pretty dress and look holy. She got cast as the donkey. But every year she would think, Wouldn't it be great if after the baby was born, they looked up from the manger and said, "It's a girl!" :> We also got the story of her first kiss, and how right afterwards the boy asked her for Cindy Loman's phone number (this was before "Angie"). Haven't heard that one in a while... (One shout from the audience was, I'll admit, rather amusing. When she started in on "The Waitress" some woman yelled, "Who's the bitch?" and without missing a beat Tori pointed to herself.) I have tapes of both last night's show and the New Haven performance, but please no one ask me for copies. You can't hear Tori over the crowd noise. (Keep in mind that I made these tapes with the same recorder as made woj's excellent recording of Happy's Albany show, etc.) I'm surely never planning on listening to them -- it's too annoying to go through over again. I really question whether or not I'd go see her again, believe it or not -- I don't think I could handle another obnoxious crowd. I'm going to stop bitching now, because I've been doing it incessantly all week. But I really do feel sorry for Tori. Geez.
