I was ecstatic at the thought of seeing her again live as I hadn't seen her since the seventies. This was in 1992 and she appeared at the coach house in San Juan Capistrano in S. California. The big night arrived. Laura walked down the stairs to the stage (the dressingrooms are upstairs). She played for 40 minutes. All of her most famous numbers (Eli's coming, Wedding Bell Blues, Stoney End, Stoned Sould Picnic, etc) were reduced to no more than 2 minutes each - except for wedding bell blues which as abridged to just a few bars. When she "concluded" her set, she said "I don't feel like walking up and down those stairs again for an encore so I'm gonna do two more songs". . So much for one of pop music legends. Maybe she was just having a bad night. I would appreciate hearing your impression of her latest concert. I don't plan on ever seeing her again unles I hear some good reviews. Her "Live at the Bottom End"CD was great. What happened to her the night I saw her....well maybe it was just an off night. I hope so. Please restore my faith in this legendary artist. It was very dark for a Disney film. For instance, the scene where Simba's father dies is *very* sad. Then what happens to the kingdom (or village, or whatever) is quite literally dark. The big climactic fight at the end is psychologically dark. Heavy things for children to contend with, if you ask me. Of course, there are lighter moments as well. The animation on this picture is, in my opinon, stunning. I guess it was in Dolby sound, or surround sound, or something, because the elephants' footsteps echoed like thunder from the four walls of the theater. There were also moments when hyenas voices could be heard from behind me. Interesting effect. The voices were all perfectly matched to the characters (typical of Disney, right?), and most of the characters were thoroughly engaging. There's no breakout character (like the Genie in Aladdin) this time around. There are some that you'll enjoy watching more than others, or to whose side you'll rally, but never one that steals the show completely. The songs (by Elton John and Tim Rice) didn't impress me. With the exception of the wonderfully staged (if that's the proper terminology) opening sequence, which makes excellent use of "The Circle of Life." The four other songs, although one of them was sort of cute, left me longing for Alan Menken. The film has a "politically correct" feel to it. For example, a female lion cub comes up the winner in a wrestling match with Simba. Ecology and the laws of nature are strongly stressed, as is the importance of "being who you are." Over all, I'm actually surprised by the film's highly adult attitude. At least, it's not the type of thing I would imagine kids would understand. Maybe it's just that *I* don't understand kids. Maybe I don't give them enough credit. Maybe the kids I meet or not of a typical quality. Ah well, whether you take your kids or not, I do highly recommend the film. I'm a big Disney fan, and this one really surprised (and delighted) me. It opens across the country next Friday (June 24). -Sam ======================================================================== From: brianb@netcom.com (Brian Bloom) Subject: Re: Silly question Date: Thu, 16 Jun 1994 07:27:10 -0700 (PDT) > Since it seems to be possible to make your head explode just by thinking > the right thoughts, would it be possible to make the whole internet explode > just by sending the right message through it? > > ...some food for thought... Now I will be kicking myself for not getting tickets to see her again. I wonder if this will come out on a ripoff single? BTW, what is *on* the Past the Mission ripoffs? I haven't seen any feedback about them on ecto -- have people heard them? Landslide is a song that I learned in one of my guitar classes. The remarkable thing about it is it has one of the absolute smoothest key changes in history. I'm not sure what key FM do it in, or TA for that matter, but as I play it, it starts off in Cmajor (I took my love, took it down, crossed the river and turned around) and then ZAP it modulates to Gmajor. It is seamless and you play it (and certainly hear) it and you say "wait a minute what just happened there." It took me a while to understand, but it is a brilliant song, to me, from that perspective. If you want the actual contents of any or all of these tapes, please e-mail me. Besides, each ordered tapes comes complete with a full cassette label and a separate printed content list. * Sounds great! How do I get a copy of any or all of these tapes? Three methods are available for getting the tapes: * Establish a cassette account. In other words, send me a check to cover the cost of cassettes, packaging, and postage. Put in as much as you want, not necessarily just to cover a single order (though you can do that, too). After your first order, anytime you want a cassette, you just e-mail me, and I fill your order as soon as possible without your mailing me anything. In this case, I would dip into my own supply of medium-quality chrome cassettes which I've ordered in bulk (Thanks, Mitch!). Accounts can be opened or closed at any time. Put in as much as you want, as more tapes will be added. * Establish a cassette account, as in 1, except that I will purchase whatever type of tape you specifically request. Obviously the cost of the tape will be higher, though the packaging and postage will be the same. * Send me the cassettes you want to put the music on (C-90 or C-100) along with money to cover packaging and return postage. I will copy the tapes you request and return them. Consider opening an account, as it will save you having to mail an order, let alone the cassettes. * How much will it cost? If you use my stash of cassettes, the cost for the cassettes is currently $1.22 each. The packaging for mailing the cassettes is between $0.35 and $0.62, depending on the number of tapes mailed. The postage varies according to the number of tapes and the destination. So far, it has ranged between $0.98 and $16.70. Big help, eh? If you wish a more precise estimate of your postage costs, I can give you one via e-mail. US orders will be mailed book rate, taking five to seven days. Non-US orders will be air mailed, taking about seven to ten days. As for foreign payments, so far everyone has sent either American cash or a money order denominated in US currency. I believe that I can handle anything denominated in US currency, and probably any cashier's check (a check drawn on the bank's rather than a personal account). * Where do I send the order? To me. My mailing address: Doug Burks 906 NW 75th St Seattle WA 98117 USA Orders will be processed in the order I get them, with special dispensation for foreign orders. Please note that I will not process any e-mail orders unless you have an open cassette account. * Can I add a tape to the tape dubbing project? If you have a tape or three that you would like to add, just ask yourself the simple question, "Would other Ectophiles like to hear this?" If you are uncertain, trying asking Ecto itself. In either case, if the answer is "Yes", I would be happy to add it. * Anything else I should know? Just a few odds and ends: If I make any mistakes, I will replace the tape for free. I intend to post a progress report on the dubbing operation regularly. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
