A random "drawing" will be held and the winners get free tickets to the July 19 WOMAD show at Great Woods (they're giving away 10 or 20 pairs). You don't have to submit a question to be a winner (just send a message). Some panel will go through the questions and have Gabriel answer them; the answers will be in the Boston Globe. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- My question: Why is WOMAD such a boy's club? Don't the people who book the acts ever pay attention to female performers? Don't *you* have any influence over the people who book the acts? It's a boys club...it's sickening. The article is quite extensive, covering several pages, and has many more pictures besides. For those who don't know about Mondo 2000, it is the first of the magazines devoted to futurist/alternative fashion, news, technology and generally obscure information in a highly stylized format that takes full advantage of advances in layout, typography and design. It grew out of the late-'80s magazine *Reality Hackers*, and laid the cultural groundwork for _Wired_ magazine, which followed in 1991. People involved in both magazines write for each other, and Mondo maintains its niche by concentrating more on fashion, style, fringe culture and odd science. Both are highly desirable users of tree pulp and I recommend them (along with the cyberzine bOING bOING, even harder to find!). To subscribe to Mondo 2000 (especially if you cannot get it on the stands locally) email them at subscriptions@mondo2000.com and if you want to write to the editor, email editor@mondo2000.com. They put out a program of child- ren's stories that WBEZ just picked up. APR is still APR. WRT Mike's query: Laura Nyro is definitely worth checking out. As much of an LN buff as I am, I'm honestly unable to make up my mind what I'd do in a forced choice between her engagement and that of Alison Moyet, with whom I have less experience so it would have more novelty. It does appear that Laura has fallen on hard times professionally; first Columbia drops her, presumably for being insufficiently commercial (I've heard that before). and now she's reduced to doing multiple nights as a lounge act. Go figure. WRT The Incredible Exploding Man: The list of danger signs seems remarkably like a lot of common--and innocuous--exigencies of the head. The perfect thing for the public to worry about unfoundedly. Mitch ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 13 Jun 94 18:22:21 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Toni Childs & other things Wrt Toni Child's second album... I never can figure out why "House of Hope" gets bashed around so often. It's kinda got the bad rep along the lines of 10,000 Maniac's "Blind Man's Zoo" but is (IMHO) undeserving of a bad reputaion. (as is BMZ) I loved "Union" when it came out, and I was wary that Toni's second album might not live up to the promise of "Union" but I was silly to doubt. "House of Hope" is amazing, powerful and awe-inspiring to me. I don't have the new one yet, but it's first on my list, along with Sheila Chandra's new album. I just re-listened to HoH to remind myself why I love it so much. Great songs, powerful lyrics, amazing voice (imagine Toni and the singer for October Project in a duo...yow!) and a personal package added together make up one of my favorite albums of 1991, and one that is very close to me in spirit. In all the years I've been a Toni Childs fan, I've never seen her in concert, I've never seen a video, and the only live performance I've ever seen is one from the David Letterman show. If anyone sees that anything is coming up, please pass it along. I caught half of the Milla video the other day. I was flipping channels and came across "Gentlemen Who Fell" playing on VH1. It's a beautiful video. We finally heard the new Jane song last night! We hadn't yet bought the soundtrack to "The Crow" but last night we saw the film. We loved the film and the song. I'm so glad they were able to finish the film for release. Although Brandon Lee died without reaching anywhere near his potential, "The Crow" is a good legacy, IMO. Everyone kept talking about how violent the film was, but I missed it if someone tried to impress how nearly unbearably *sad* it is. I would have cried a lot even if Brandon Lee hadn't been killed. Knowing that he was dead gave an extra heavy layer of melancholia and gloom to the film. Even though we went to see the movie "Speed" after seeing "The Crow" I still had the depression of "The Crow" around me and couldn't shake it up until the time I went to bed. We will have to get the soundtrack, of course. "Speed" was extremely entertaining, btw. We'll almost certainly buy both movies when they come out on video or laser. (Yes, we're the ones who, while in England, bought wide-screen PAL videos of "Brazil," "Blade Runner" (director's cut) and... "Die Hard"! Our tastes are nothing if not eclectic :)) Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 13 Jun 1994 16:21:42 -0700 (PDT) From: SUZANNE S WEISS Subject: Re: The Line, the Cross, the Curve in L.A. Happily, tonight on the radio, I heard NEW NENEH CHERRY! OOH! OOH! And to make things even better and perhaps more ectophillic, it was a duet with Youssou N'Dour! I wasn't entirely clear from the DJ's spiel whether the entire upcoming album would be a collaboration between Cherry and N'Dour, or whether the album actually "belonged" to a single one of the two. In any event, it's called _The Guide_ and the song I heard was called "Seven Seconds." It was *great*. Youssou sang the verses, in what sounded like a *heavily* accented French...the first verse, I wasn't sure what language it was, but the second verse I could pick out a word here or there (and especially the word "chante'" (do I remember my conjugation of chanter correctly?) before Neneh started singing the second itteration of the chorus). As one might expect from Neneh, it's a combo of rap and melodic stuff, with the latter taking precedence. I can't wait to hear it again. --------- On an unrelated note, I heard also heard the horrible remake of Howard Jones' "No One is to Blame", which Phil Collinst mostly ruined by taking an incredibly somber, beautiful piece and adding a typical Phil Collins touch to it. I'm amazed that Jones let him. In any event, listening to it made me long for the the original, and then I decided that I would just *love* for Sarah McLachlan to do a cover of it. Jeff |Jeffrey C. I want to know if I'm allowed to do this though! Artists get royalties when their songs are played on radio, yes? So I'd really need Happy's approval to do this? Or do I simply pass on the necessary information about Happy/AG with the tape? (Yeah, I know it's dangerous. :-) Maybe my head has *already exploded* at least once. What follows is something I posted to the usenet newsgroup alt.out-of-body a while ago. I think what happened is that my head really exploded, and then I just re-materialised the universe as I remembered it. I didn't feel any pain. In fact, the whole experience was quite pleasurable. I also think this theory about electricity being the cause of the explosion is a bit weak. How could electricity alone explode a head? Maybe the electricity is needed to maintain a strong magnetic field controlling a nuclear fusion reaction. When the field is disturbed, the reaction unstabilises, and the head explodes.
