And Jane Relf was the first singer. I thought that there were two different groups because both albums were out at the same time. The cover was a beautiful painting called "The Downfall of Icarus" by Genisson and the album was produced by Paul Samwell-Smith. I have the English release and it is dated (P)1969, Island Records. The next album I got was Prologue, on Sovereign/Capitol (US), (P)1972, and consists of John Tout, Annie Haslam, Rob Hendry, John Camp and Terry Sullivan. Producer is Miles Copeland. Album is dedicated to Mick Parsons. 1973 is the Ashes Are Burning album, personnel was same but no Rob Hendry. Producer was Dick Plant. Also released on Sovereign/Capitol. 1974 is Turn Of The Cards, and the band gained Michael Dunford, who had guested on Ashes Are Burning. Record label is Sire. But in 1975 I got an album called Illusion, released on Island, sleeve printed in West Germany. The band lineup is the same as the first: Keith, Jim, Louis, John and Jane! Keith Relf produced it. I dated it 4/75 back then, because most records did not have copyright dates and there was no other way to keep track of releases. I THINK it was new then. The last one I have is the double live album from 1976, also on Sire, and consisting of the alternative group from 1972, 3 & 4. Nowhere on the American Renaissance albums is any mention made of the English Renaissance; even the sounds are so similar that I thought they were the same band with some personnel changes. In fact, until I sat down to write this, I thought that there was some overlap. I can only assume that the American Renaissance was a clone band, copying the English group's ideas but not covering any of their songs. This is a mystery! Perhaps Happy's album should be reissued as The Original Warpaint, The Real Warpaint, or whatever :-). WRT some people's comments/queries: I like a number of the progressive artists (especially Renaissance) that someone listed. I also like Scrawl. WRT the former band: Bob misspelt; her name is really Annie Haslam. Condolences to Joe. Wishing Kath happiness in her long-term relationship. WRT Angelos' idea of Happy shooting a video at the real Colossus of Rhodes: it wasn't too many years ago she could have shot it at the Rhodes Theater, at the corner of 79th St. and Rhodes Ave. on the great south side of Chicaga :-). It was not a movie palace in the classic sense, just a plain-vanilla neighbor- hood cinema which ultimately fell apart, which is why they tore it down. I never went there, so I have no particular sentimental ties to it other than its symbolism of the collapse of much of the neighborhood cinema industry in the United States. For all that, it would have been cheaper to travel there than to Greece to shoot a video :-). Anything that can help spread the word about Happy's music! I was especially pleased to hear that Happy is going to include a lot of acoustic guitar on the new album!! :) Speaking of which, I CAN'T WAIT! In other news, I am surprised that no one (that I know of) has mentioned Toni Childs' new album "The Woman's Boat" which came out last week. I think it is really good. It is a concept album, Peter Gabriel sings on one song, and the album closes with the superb 10 minute song "Death". This album is certainly not for everyone, but I do recommend it, especially for anyone who likes Toni's other work. I can only assume that the American |> Renaissance was a clone band, copying the English group's ideas but not |> covering any of their songs. This is a mystery! One of my favorite bands! And yes, I believe they are just one band going through some massive personnel changes. Keith Relf & Jim McCarty founded the band, which released the first album and was halfway through recording their second when Keith died. (For those who haven't heard, this wasn't a drug thing - he electrocuted himself playing his electric guitar in the bathtub. True story. :-( ) When I first saw a discography of Renaissance, this album (the _Illusions_ album) was listed as unreleased and withdrawn from print, and I never thought I'd see a copy of it. I don't have my albums here at work with me, but if you look at the credits on _Illusions_ (the CD, at least) you'll find some of the new musicians credited on one of the songs. The transition after Keith Relf's death is when I presume Jane Relf left the band and Annie Haslam came in, and somewhere along there McCarty stepped back to being just a producer. If you look at the songwriting credits for _Prologue_ (I think - or was it _Ashes_?), you'll see one of the songs was co-written by him - some of the old repertory showing up later, no doubt. And I believe Dunford was involved somehow in _Prologue_ & _Ashes_, since I believe he has songwriting credits. Just to fill out the discography - after Turn of the Cards came _Scheherazade_ (1975?), then the double _Live at Carnegie Hall_ album, then _Novella_ ('77?). _Song for All Seasons_ ('79?) was next, and started a shift in style. _Azure D'Or_ ('80?) came next, and Terrance Sullivan and John Tout left before the final (as far as I know) album, _Camera Camera_ ('82?). I finally got to see them live on that tour, and treasure the experience. Annie was just getting over a cold, but was still in good voice, and Jon Camp was tremendous. I still rate him as one of the most overlooked bassists I've ever heard. As I mentioned, I found the first album & _Illusions_ on CD, on Line Records reissues, but I've just about given up on the Sire years. Sire seems to feel that by putting out the _Tales of 1001 Nights_ collections, they've done their part and there's no reason to reissue the originals. I don't know if I'd kill for it, but I would definitely commit mayhem and bodily harm for a copy of _Live At Carnegie Hall_ on CD. :-) With the *shortest* LP side being over 23 minutes, ranging up to over 28, it was made for CD. The LP grooves were so tight there was no dynamic range. I wish I had the luxury of looking over my albums before answering this, but if I put it off it'll collect with the other ninety-eleven things I need to do and it'll be totally lost. If anyone has any more details, I'd love to see 'em, and if you want more specific info, let me know & I'll verify before I post it. However, you are incorrect. There was only one Renaissance. Lineup 1 released two albums "Renaissance" and "Illusion". Then, over a 13 month period, all 5 members of the band left and were replaced. However, Jim McCarty continued to write for the band for quite a few years. Lineup 2 released "Prologue", then parted ways with Rob Hendry as the band headed in directions that were not pleasing to an electric guitarist. Instead, Michael Dunford came in on "Ashes are Burning" on accoustic guitar. After the next album "Turn of the Cards", the original lineup regrouped but could no longer use the name Renaissance, so they called themselves Illusion, after their second album. This band didn't last long, only releasing one album. A few years ago, an Illusion outtakes album came out on CD. Meanwhile, Renaissance released "Scheherazade", a double live album the name of which eludes me at the moment, and "Novella" my favorite. After that, the band started to get strong pressures from the label to save money and get more commercial. "A Song for All Seasons" is pretty spare with the full orchestration and "Azure D'Or" eliminated it completely, making do with synthesizers instead. "Time Lines" showed a strong nod to the new wave. Annie's gowns went bye-bye and new wave fashions came in. However, the album was interesting, breathing some new life into the band. It was short lived. "Time Line" was dead on arrival. The band hung in for a year or two after that and then disbanded. Sire has reissued two very good compilations - "Tales of 1001 Nights, Vol. 1 and 2". They are highly recommended. Also, One Way Records has reissued "Prologue" and "Ashes are Burning" in their entirety. Do not buy the Capitol budget reissue of those two albums. They are edited. I occasionally saw an import of "Azure D'Oro", which I passed on as I never liked it in the first place. The Japanese don't need the rights to the Sire albums. They can do whatever they want with non-Japanese artists. They do not honor copyright laws for non-Japs. All they care about, copyright-wise, is local talent. +########################################################################+ +###+ Paul Cohen, Philadelphia, PA +###+ +########################################################################+ +###+ P.COHEN@genie.geis.com +###+ PMCOHEN@aol.com +###+ +###+ 70703.3126@compuserve.com +###+ PMCOHEN@delphi.com +###+ +########################################################################+ ======================================================================== From: p.cohen@genie.geis.com Date: Wed, 1 Jun 94 05:15:00 UTC Subject: Re: Renaissance > BTW, has any other band than Renaissance and Menudo (not many sentences > that can mention both bands!) ever *completely* replaced its players? > If you consider Jefferson Airplane/Starship as a continuing entity, they > might qualify... or the Monkees and The New Monkees. Please do not use this word on Ecto. It is a racist term and not appreciated by many people, including myself, with Japanese ancestry. WXPN does have booths set up to get people to become members of the station and help support events like this. I've gone over the last few years and all you have to do is get there by 3:00 when the whole thing starts. Since its free there seems to be a flow of people coming and leaving throughout the day, so there never seems to be a real problem finding a place to sit. Just bring a cushion of some type if you're planning to stay through the whole day(usually ends about 10 or so) as the concrete steps/seats are pretty hard. There are food vendors on the pier but they tend to be rather overpriced so we usually bring something or walk down the street to one of the delis. This is a public space so you can't sleep there overnight...that is unless your one of the homeless:) I know that someone on Ecto besides myself offered to put a few folks up overnight if they were coming from a distance. As to directions it's really easy. It's directly off Route 95 in Philly. You just look for the exit sign for Penns Landing and you're almost dumped right on top of it. ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 1 Jun 94 10:45:50 -0400 From: pearceja%pomis.dnet@wl.wpafb.af.mil Subject: Renaissance CD availability I N T E R O F F I C E M E M O R A N D U M Date: 01-Jun-1994 10:38am EST From: Lt Jeffrey A. Good luck. ___________________________________________________________________________ Jeff Pearce pearceja@wl.wpafb.af.mil And though I'd like to laugh At all the things that led me on Somehow the stigma still remains David Sylvian - "Waterfront" ___________________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 1 Jun 94 08:08:35 PDT From: snpf@lucid.com (Sarah Noelle Pratt Ferguson) Subject: Sam Phillips Yeah, at the Great American Music Hall, which is a beautiful ornately gilded small place. Her opening act was kindof interesting, a southern feel to his style, good singing. However, he didn't hold attention very well. We decided it made good background music for viewing the murals and gilt work. Sam came on only a little while after the opening act, and she was a powerful presence on the stage. She is 'spare' with movement when she is singing. She explained that this was the case (after the first song) because about eight years ago she saw a video choreographed by Paula Abdul. To open the 'I can't please you' song, she dedicated it to Jerry Falwell and Rush Limbaugh, and said she heard they were getting married soon. She seemed a little overshadowed by men--one bass, two guitarists, and an incredibly happy and energetic drummer. This was perhaps because she wore black square flow, and they were larger than she was. It was a great concert. Her voice is really powerful, and it's also cool to hear her talk. Her voice.... She asked if people had seen the 'Stand' on television at the first encore, and commented that perhaps she should sell the rights for her family [story] to Stephen King because they were scary. But not as scary as [yes] Rush Limbaugh and Jerry Falwell. *grin* She did two encores, and the song I remember besides the last was `Private Storm', which is on her second album, and is awesome! I want to play it for a friend of mine who doesn't understand dealing with the past. The last song she sang was 'My Heart Belongs to Daddy' (this may not be the official title of the song). It was disturbing, yet humorous. Hey! I got to talk to her for a while afterwards. I was with three friends who really like her as well, and we waited upstairs for her to come out--we four waited by the door. And she came out and put her hand on my friend Gary's shoulder (he was sitting with his back to the door), and surprised the hell out of him, and introduced herself. (As if we didn't know who she was. It was really cool.) She was delighted at my friends' enthusiasm. We were the first group to talk to her, and we talked to her for a while, and she said it was nice to talk about something `real'. We got glares from people standing in line waiting, and her virgin rep was kindof trying to push her away from us, but she was enjoying herself, as we were, just talking. It was kindof funny. I commented on her line, and she basically said so what. :) She said that T-Bone Burnett was planning to release their next album on the net so there isn't any copyright stuff on it. He was jaded from working with Sony. She was really friendly and wanted to talk to us for longer. We were talking about Rush Limbaugh (Jabba), and religion and how institutionalized religions tend to be bad. I commented on how institutionalized religion also precluded individuality. In General, of course. She doesn't know if she has an email address. And, hey, on my cd cover, she wrote "Thanks for the chat." :) Real people are awesome. -seanympf ======================================================================== From: Ethan Straffin Date: Wed, 1 Jun 94 08:53:22 -0700 Subject: Delete now if not interested in Lloyd Cole mailing list! Interesting! She looks great (especially in the near-nude scenes and in the white nightgown). But I noted that the director was Lisa Bonet. Same one, I wonder?? Glad to see she HAS a video; maybe she will sell more cds. Which leads to the magic question: Will Happy do a video for the upcoming album? Who will direct, etc.? What song? Has she done any before? (I'm surprised this has not been mentioned recently.)
