Just a little idea to shake things up a bit. Imagiune if you will that you have been commisioned by an amazingly rich ectophile to make a single video of a single Happy Rhodes song that would be in international release (my, this could be fun). You are given an unlimited budget, but are given the following set of rules: 1. Happy must appear in the video, even if not singing (a la KaTe) 2. You must give justification for your song selection. 3. Will your selection be appealing to the largest number of possible ecto converts? 4. How does your vision typify Happy as a musician? 5. What commercial location would you have the video play on? (MTV, VH1, CMC, DMX, Movie Theatre, etc) No; I didn't think this up, it was a project for a music class I was in last quarter at CSUH. We were given vaguley these rules and then got to select a musician. I selected a collaboration between Happy and KaTe (it could happen:) but the poppy brained music students in the class wiped me out by selecting a rather gacky individual named Janet Jackson. So; get those juices flowin` maybe we can give H&K some ideas. * * ************************Another work volunteered for her army*********** ********************Troy J. Hi everyone! Thanks to all for the birthday wishes. I've been much more of a lurker than I'd like due to a very heavy workload plus (during school) courseload. Oh, and for those who can't put my name to a face, if you were at either of the previous two Boston KaTemas celebrations (kudos twice again to Greg Bossart) I was the one juggling to KaTe/Happy, and the one who almost took a wayward firework in the face at the 1992 bash! Having just returned from three weeks on bizness in Palo Alto, I'm pleased to announce another convert! I had brought a tape of Warpaint & Equipoise (wow...my fingers almost typed "Ectopoise") and played them in the rental 'mobile. I was on a date with a woman I had met over there, and Equipoise was a wonderful addition to a foggy-evening mountain drive down to Santa Cruz. -=$>Dave<$=- (bummed because Peter Gabriel and The The's NY-area shows were going on whilst I was in Cali....) ======================================================================== From: cole@lea.csc.ncsu.edu (Robert Cole) Subject: Re: The Happy CD5 Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1993 16:01:41 -0400 (EDT) Add me to the list of people confused about what qualifies as an Ectophile. I *do* want the CD5 (I have the other 6 CDs as well as the batwing-dove shirt so that should count for something). Besides, my money is (mostly) as good as anyone elses. So, do I qualify? If so, exactly how do I go about ordering one? Enquiring happy minds want to know. And yes, I am a lurker. This is, in fact, my first post. Robert G. I echo Jeff's sentiment (and some other person mentioned this too) about getting alternative stations to play Ashes to Ashes. It's a song everyone knows, she does a great version of it, it should be an instant hit. So, do we have a list of radio stations that are getting the CD5? I am particularly interested in the Chicago area ones. I hope that the obvious commercial alternative stations (none are truly alternative) will get it. I'd say specifically WXRT (93.1), WCBR (92.7), 101.1 (Q101 --- "Chicago's *new* alternative station"), and 97.9 WLUP (the LOOP). These should all be very reasonable places to expect this song to be played. If they're on the list, I will call them. If they're not on the list, *get* *them* *on*! There are other possible stations around town, particularly WNUA (new age music), but if it's the alternative market she wants, it's not worth wasting postage on any other that those 4. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 28 Jun 93 15:59:00 CST From: kiri Subject: HR5...CD single i'm a little behind in ecto... how much does the cd5 cost and what address do i need to send my check to???? i've been really busy lately with research, teaching, and basking in disgusting 95 degree heat with 95% humidity, the cold fronts never seem to sag low enough to cool us off....it's a real bummer. WRT Mike's thoughts on Chicago radio outlets for Happy's new EP: I agree that WXRT, WCBR, WKQX, and perhaps WLUP are the ones to prioritize among those with quasi-alternative formats, but I would argue strenuously against her limiting her promotional efforts to stations in that genre. (Which Mike, strictly con- strued, was not arguing for; but I think that given some aspects of the tone of his post, he could be misconstrued that way.) I happen to agree that WNUA, like it or lump it, is also a plausible outlet for at least some of her stuff, but I don't think too many eggs should be put into that basket. Once again, I'd like to make a strong pitch for WBEZ, particularly Stuart Rosenberg's shows _The Earth Club_ and _Radio Gumbo_, but also possibly _Artistic License_, _Back stage Pass_ and the morning talk shows, all of which do interviews and/or per- formances by/with musical figures. Also _The Midnight Special_ on WFMT, and the major college stations: WNUR, WHPK and, insofar as it doesn't already play Happy outside of Vickie's show, WZRD. (All these stations, as I see it, should also be introduced to Happy's other recordings, especially _Equipoise_ and _Warpaint_. Spoke to Susanne today; passed along Mitch's info, checked on Australia for Anthony (just a cage rattle, so to speak), and got some info for Angelos. I'll check again tomorrow for stations, but I have an idea - why don't we all call every station we think Happy's music would work on, and request a song from HR5? If they have it they might play it, and if they don't have it an enough of us call they may get it. You can't go wrong! And now back to the mailing list, which was already in progress. Bob the Obscure ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1993 22:44:57 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: Knots and Crosses Hi! Whilst driving home from New Jersey last night (didja get the furniture in, woj? And was Greg up yet when you got there? ;) I happened upon World Cafe and an in-studio appearance by the Boston trio Knots and Crosses. I'd never heard of them before, but apparently that's not surprising, since they're totally unknown outside of the Boston area. Apparently they have quite a following in Boston, and are promoting their self-recorded and produced and marketed CDs up and down the East Coast. (Gee, does this sound familiar?) They are an acoustic group featuring two guys on guitar and a woman on guitar (I think) and vocals. Actually, all three of them sing, but the woman takes the lead most of the time while the other two provide wonderful harmonies. I was trying to figure out who she sounds like- kind of like Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams, with a bit of somebody else with a slightly nasal power edge thrown in. (I can't for the life of me put my finger on who that someone else is, and it's been driving me crazy...) At any rate, I was mightily impressed with what I heard- I think they did at least six songs live in the studio. I think their "hit" in Boston is called "Creatures of Habit", but I didn't catch what the names of their two albums are. Anyone out there in Boston know of these people? Where in the city are their albums sold- the next time I'm up there I intend to seek them out and buy them. Also, they mentioned that they'll be performing around New England all summer, if they come my way I'd love to go, providing I know it's happening... any help on that front would be appreciated, as well. It kinda bothers me that anyone would think that just because they're a "lurker" they might not be considered an Ectophile. Sure you are!! If you receive Ecto via loose mail, the digest, or through the various and sundry newsgroups set up because your site requires it, then you are an Ectophile eligible to get the CD5 from Aural Gratification. It doesn't matter if you've been on the list for a week or for 2 years. It doesn't matter if you've never posted. It doesn't even matter if you don't even own any Happy currently, or even if you've never even heard what she sounds like. Even. Really, you're an Ectophile. Greg Clow (hi!) -- definitely! Robert Cole (hi!) -- absolutely! Lurkers of the EctoWorld unite! You don't have to post, just please know that yes, you are considered Ectophiles, ok? (You want to know how many are you? Well, there are 192 "named" Ectophiles, plus an unknown number who read via the newsgroups. That's a *lot* of lurkers! You are *not* alone! I'm just glad you're here, and that you like Happy or are interested in learning more about her, or just want to see what we go on about. Hello to all of you!) Here's the low-down on the CD5 again: Subject: About the CD single... Hi all you wonderful folks! You can order the CD single *now*. A list of Ectophiles from early May, when the CD single was first announced, and another that I'm just getting ready to send him, which is the most current. You are considered an Ectophile if your name appears on either of these two lists, *or*... ...if you read Ecto from one of the 8 Newsgroups. If you are a Newsgroup reader, you **MUST** give Kevin the *full* address of the Newsgroup *and* the name of the person who set it up, who subsribed to Ecto in the first place. For instance, Norway readers would give Yngve's name, and the address you receive it at. You should send this information to me as well (your name, the Newsgroup address, and the contact name) because Kevin will double-check with me anyone he's not sure about. It has to be understood that these CDs are in *very* limited supply. Kevin has held back 193 to be sold to Ectophiles. There are 192 Ectophiles, *NOT* including Newsgroup readers. While it's doubtful that all 192 people on the active list will order a CD, this is still a first come, first served situation. I've specifically asked Kevin to hold copies for Yngve and Drewcifer. ** STEVE POTTER ** Are you there???? I listed you as a "Floating Ectophile" because you read via Gopher. You *can* order a CD if you want. Are there any other Floating Ectophiles?? *Please* e-mail me. If there's anyone else who thinks there might be a problem with being listed as an Ectophile, e-mail me. Kevin warns that these CD singles *might*, at some point, be pressed as a retail item. If this were to happen, an extra song would probably be added, and it would almost certainly cost *less* in the stores than the mail-order price. He wants you to know that, so hopefully there won't be any hard feelings if it should happen. You know the score before you send money to Aural Gratification. (Personally, it should hardly matter to any *true* Happy fan. These mail-order discs will be *personal* collector's items anyway. They will be signed by Happy, guaranteed. Plus, if they *are* re-pressed for retail, there will be changes to the cover, and there will be a bar code on them. And hey, wouldn't we buy the commercial copies *anyway*? Sure we would.) Kevin has other things to say, which I will pass on, but that's the main meal. Order now, order early, enthuse a lot, let Happy and Kevin know how much you appreciate them thinking about us, and find a little cloud to dance upon. We are blessed! Vickie ps, the original number of Ectophiles was 180, but the figure was readjusted when I got the most current members list, then added some Ectophiles away for the summer who said that they'd definitely be back. ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 29 Jun 93 0:22:37 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: BRNI!!
