Gosh--I went away for two weeks and what happens? Happy's single becomes available and Kate has a new song! Maybe I should go home to San Fran more often..... I have to second the recommendation for Jane Siberry's "The Walking". It was my first Jane album, and I have to say I was captivated within the first two minutes of "The White Tent the Raft". It's still my favorite Jane album. Was it here or on gaffa that someone mentioned Jeni Muldaur? I've been very curious as to what her album is like. Can someone describe the music for me? I went to middle school with her in Mill Valley, California, but I didn't know her. All I remember about her is that she never wore shoes. Well, I have to go finish my experiment that I screwed up but decided to go ahead and finish anyway. I hate it when that happens! Copperman Subject: Rounding out the Jane list I am tempted to jump into the Jane recommendations with Speckless Sky, as I don't think that's been recommended yet, but it's the one I listen to the least. I also bought No Borders Here first, and still find it a great introduction, though a good friend was turned off by it and eventually got them all from liking later works. Bound By the Beauty is probably the most musically accesable, but if you have a low coy, twee or just plain silliness threshold, you better watch out. Maybe child-like is the most appropriate word, since Jane loves to marvel over things like red wagons, childhood experiences, playing cowboys and indians, red high heels (Kate's Red Shoes perhaps). That's not meant as a criticism, since I do have 4 recordings in some format or other and have seen her twice and would gladly do so again. Discwise I have Borders and Bound, and would be happy to tape them for you. (You can then buy them if you love them or tape over them and send it back). I'll be out of town for a week as I gleefully skip out of work for Yosemite, but let me know if the tape sounds good. The first listen or two of "Suspiria" didn't do a lot for me (except for the track "Sunshine", which is one of the most glorious "wall o' guitar noise" songs this side of My Bloody Valentine), but one evening I listened to the whole album very LOUD, and quite frankly, it scared the HELL out of me... but in a GOOD way. I've been a HNIA fan since soon after "Livonia" came out, and I've wanted to see then live for the longest time. So, I was very happy when a Toronto date was annouced for a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, they were opening for Swell, but a short HNIA set is better than none at all. So, my wife and I showed up and the club and sat down, and then about 15 minutes later, someone got on stage and annouced that HNIA had been stopped at the border and would not be playing. A chorus of "BOOO"'s arose, followed by the person on stage announcing that refunds were available at the door for people who didn't want to stay just for Swell, followed by literally half of the audience (us included) leaving the club. Oh well, at least they had the decency to give us refunds. Still depressing, though. ----- >Directly from Kevin Bartlett to your door*: > >Well, HR'5 is finally in our midst. (If you don't know what this is, I've attached the original announcement below my .signature). So far, I have received tapes from the following Ectophiles: -- none -- Look's pretty empty, doesn't it? At least, I can spell all of the names correctly. :) Given the time delay of the postal services, you have LESS THAN ONE MONTH, if you want to contribute. ACT NOW!! It's later than you think! Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! Greetings, On August 9th, our heroine Happy Tyler Rhodes will turn 28 years old. Such a day definitely should not pass without some collective gift from Ecto. Thus this is the announcement for the 1993 (or 28 AHR (or 35 AKT)) version of the Happy Birthday Project. The collective Ecto gift will be a tape or two full of greetings and music collected from Ectophiles. Anyone who wishes to contribute should put together a tape of personal greetings, wishes, their chosen songs, and any introduction for the song(s). All of this will be compiled onto one or more tapes which will be mailed to Happy in time for her birthday, possibly along with a small additional gift. That's the gist of things, so let's try to anticipate any questions. * What songs should I choose? Choose any song that you would like Happy to hear. The only restriction is that your total contribution of greetings and music should not exceed ten minutes. Thus you can even choose two or even three short songs, if you so desire. In spite of this, feel free to contribute some extra songs, in case some troublesome empty space needs to be filled. If you do so, be sure to indicate which songs are your true contribution. * Recording and mailing a tape seems like a lot of effort, can I avoid any of that? The only way is if your chosen song is buried somewhere deep in my collection, a possibility (though not a likelihood, knowing this crew :) ). In that case, I can record it straight from my copy, avoiding one copying generational loss in the process. It's certainly worth a try, so why not check? * How can I add my personal greetings, when I have no equipment to record my voice? We have two different options available. One, Mitch has volunteered to use his mellifluous tones to record any greetings you wish, so e-mail him [u15289@uicvm.uic.edu] a script for him to record. Two, if you are too shy to write anything, Mitch will record an introduction for you, including your name, city/country of residence, your selection, and anything else that pops into his mind. :) * Where do I send my contribution? All contributions should be mailed on cassette tape to me: Doug Burks, 2036 West Plum St C7, Fort Collins CO 80521 USA * Can I get a copy of the finished tape? The final tape will be available to any Ectophiles via the tape dubbing project. Contributors who send me an actual tape will receive a free copy of the tape, though if it runs onto two (or three (or four (or ...)) tapes, the additional tapes will be available under the tape dubbing project conditions. * What happens if someone else picks my song? In the past, Ectophiles posted their selections to avoid this. However, I personally prefer surprises on the final tape, so will not require this. (Should you desire to post them, though, don't let this stop you). Also given this group's eclectic tastes displayed in past similar efforts, duplications are quite unlikely. If that unlikelihood does occur, the duplications will be handled on a first-come basis, another good reason to submit more than one song and to submit early. * What is the deadline? We are going to get it out on time this year, even if I have to be a bitch (or whatever the male equivalent is :) ) about it. The deadline for all ends of the project is August 1st. Anything sent after that date will never see the light of day. While that sounds deep in the future, time flies, especially in the summer or with slow postal service. Act now!! Contribute early and often!! :) I hope this covers everything. If you have questions, problems, or comments, feel free to ask me personally or raise them here. It goes without saying that I like it, or actually the 3 songs that are "new". (My God, I'm beginning to sound like a rabid gaffan). I REALLY like _Ashes to Ashes_. The line "I'm happy, hope you're happy too" takes on particular significance. Too bad there are no printed lyrics, it would of been interesting to see if the "h" in "I'm happy" was capitalized. (-: Like Kevin said in his letter, this song is exactly the type of thing that the alternaltive stations seem to be going for lately. Acoustic (or softer) covers of a song originaly done by males done over by females. _Wild Horses_ (Sundays ?), the Cowboy Junkies _Sweet Jane_, and Tori's _Smells Like Teen Spirit_ immediately come to mind. I think that I like the acoustic version of _Save our Souls_ better than the =poise version. It seems more poignant. _I Say_ sounds different than the version on =poise. Is this remixed? The intro drums sound more prominent or something. I'll have to check against the other original. I also like song 6 though it's tough to dance to (-: I'm a little surprised about the overall tone of the CD. It seems very, well...folky. If somebody's only exposure to Happy was via this CD, their opinion would be very different than if they had first heard _Warpaint_ or _Equipoise_. It reminds me more of VI than her later stuff, probably because of the predominance of acoustic songs. Regarding the cover, has anybody figured out the four symbols? The one in the upper right is probably from _Ashes to Ashes_, "An axe to break the ice". The lower left would be the fire from _Feed the Fire_. The other two, I'm not so sure of. I tend to agree with the person (Meredith?) who thought it was a bad idea to use a profile shot of Happy, though for commercial purposes, it's better than a monster. ks ======================================================================== Date: 28 Jun 93 12:06:53 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: CD5 I got my CD5 in the mail on Friday.
