Hard to fault him, but the call for "S"s is a week late. Hello to everyone! Here is the next call for submissions to An Ectophiles Guide to Good Music. This is an open call for opinions about artists/groups whose names start with S. Guess who that means! The idea of the Guide is to let us share our musical enthusiasms with each other. **The important thing is you being able to share what you think is important about this music.** Please, everyone, send at least your opinions of these artists. We welcome any and all participation and would like to receive as many opinions on as many artists as possible. Please respond with to: ethelred@u.washington.edu by Wednesday, June 30. If this really happens, it means Happy will get the current project tape before the last FEW? I know vickie sent out tape 1 of a multi-tape project but that never got ecto-circulated, TMK. And of course there's the blackhole birthday tape from our good friend, the Greg E. Bossert (E stands for elusive). So Doug, you are in danger of setting a good precedent. Beware! Since I never sent anything to Vickie for the last one, I will come through (bli neder) this time with some a cappella tunage from the likes of the Bobs and I might throw on some Sparrow for flavor. Bah, call me a cynic. you too huh? that's probably why I don't see too many movies from Hollywood anymore. I'd like to second Meth's request, if any one out there knows if and when the hour long 10,000 Maniacs unplugged will be rebroadcast please let us know. I was (am?) rather upset when I was flipping through the channels and heard the strains of "Don't Talk" b/c I knew it wasn't in the 1/2 hour one. Sometimes I really hate eMpTyV. I couldn't even watch the rest of it...I'd be too upset. So I watched _Night on Earth_ (which I was going to do anyway.) Speaking of the Maniacs, I got a chance to see them on Sat (12th) for $5. I'm not kidding about the price. They were at Deer Creek Music Center's Fair and Music Festival -- the concert was free with the price of getting into the fair. *GREAT* show!!! They did a lot of older material, more songs from _In My Tribe_ than any other album. I can't remember the exact play list and had nothing to write it on, but I could remember all the songs they did by looking at the albums. Not much else to say about it. Seconded! It would be very interesting to see the SiG playlists each week. I really enjoy getting to read the Champagne Jam ones. This isn't really a spoiler... there's been some discussion of Jurassic Park (the movie) recently, and I just saw it last night. I wasn't really disappointed, but more like welmed (not over or under). The effects were quite impressive, although it did still have that (unavoidable?) gremlin look and feel at times. I was, however, most disappointed with the book-to-screen adaptation. The book was hands down fantastic. The movie really just covered the main points of the book, omitting many of the small but interesting and important details, both plot-related and dinosaur-related. There were no pterodactyls. And most disappointing was the movie ending, if you could call it an ending. What a complete let-down! I mean the movie just gets cut-off. Now, if you want to know how it really ends, read the book! It is hard to imagine how someone who did not read the book could be happy with that ending. Having read the book, I feel like the movie's goal was to animate a window of the book, but certainly not the whole thing. Thus it realized a portion of the novel, but cut off before the closing. Does anyone know if this ending (the movie's) has been messed around with at all? It would almost have to be. I would highly recommend reading the book before seeing the movie because no matter how good Spielberg's work, your own imagination will do even better. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: 15 Jun 93 14:25:30 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: Ecto-virgin? Underdog is here! Well, if you are going to start with just 2 happy rhodes disks, I would have to say that (at this moment in time) Volume I is absolute necessity. I could not live without the knowledge of its existence, so start at the beginning. As for choice number 2, IMO the most hands-down brilliant of all her CDs is Ecto. So buy: Happy Rhodes I Ecto Listen to every odd song on I, then listen to the second half of Ecto. These, for me, are the most definitive HR songs. Everything else is great too, but I for one did not and would not (knowing what I now know) start anywhere but at the beginning; certainly not with Warpaint and EQP, although they are both fine albums you will eventually want to own. Let us know what you decide. -mjm ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
