Please, keep trying! I'd recommend their latest one, "Mo Di", rather than "Mouth Music". They're very different albums really, almost but not quite a totally different line-up. For me Jackie Joyce "makes" Mouth Music, especially live. I saw them at the Fleadh ("Merry Making" in Irish Gaelic) in Glasgow last weekend. WHAT A BAND!!! Any one in the UK who thinks they haven't been exposed to Mouth Music probably has. They did the music for the Drambuie advert where the bottle of D gets transported half-way across the world and the waiter drops it before it gets to the table. Martin Swan won an award for it. -- _____________________________________________________________________ / Evan Welsh \ \ Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (+44 31 650 5960) / ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 14 Jun 93 10:25:36 +0100 From: Terry Partis Subject: HaPpY Birthdays Here's wishing Happy Birthdays to Mark. Such a day definitely should not pass without some collective gift from Ecto. Thus this is the announcement for the 1993 (or 28 AHR (or 35 AKT)) version of the Happy Birthday Project. The collective Ecto gift will be a tape or two full of greetings and music collected from Ectophiles. Anyone who wishes to contribute should put together a tape of personal greetings, wishes, their chosen songs, and any introduction for the song(s). All of this will be compiled onto one or more tapes which will be mailed to Happy in time for her birthday, possibly along with a small additional gift. That's the gist of things, so let's try to anticipate any questions. * What songs should I choose? Choose any song that you would like Happy to hear. The only restriction is that your total contribution of greetings and music should not exceed ten minutes. Thus you can even choose two or even three short songs, if you so desire. In spite of this, feel free to contribute some extra songs, in case some troublesome empty space needs to be filled. If you do so, be sure to indicate which songs are your true contribution. * Recording and mailing a tape seems like a lot of effort, can I avoid any of that? The only way is if your chosen song is buried somewhere deep in my collection, a possibility (though not a likelihood, knowing this crew :) ). In that case, I can record it straight from my copy, avoiding one copying generational loss in the process. It's certainly worth a try, so why not check? * How can I add my personal greetings, when I have no equipment to record my voice? We have two different options available. One, Mitch has volunteered to use his mellifluous tones to record any greetings you wish, so e-mail him [u15289@uicvm.uic.edu] a script for him to record. Two, if you are too shy to write anything, Mitch will record an introduction for you, including your name, city/country of residence, your selection, and anything else that pops into his mind. :) * Where do I send my contribution? All contributions should be mailed on cassette tape to me: Doug Burks, 2036 West Plum St C7, Fort Collins CO 80521 USA * Can I get a copy of the finished tape? The final tape will be available to any Ectophiles via the tape dubbing project. Contributors who send me an actual tape will receive a free copy of the tape, though if it runs onto two (or three (or four (or ...)) tapes, the additional tapes will be available under the tape dubbing project conditions. * What happens if someone else picks my song? In the past, Ectophiles posted their selections to avoid this. However, I personally prefer surprises on the final tape, so will not require this. (Should you desire to post them, though, don't let this stop you). Also given this group's eclectic tastes displayed in past similar efforts, duplications are quite unlikely. If that unlikelihood does occur, the duplications will be handled on a first-come basis, another good reason to submit more than one song and to submit early. * What is the deadline? We are going to get it out on time this year, even if I have to be a bitch (or whatever the male equivalent is :) ) about it. The deadline for all ends of the project is August 1st. Anything sent after that date will never see the light of day. While that sounds deep in the future, time flies, especially in the summer or with slow postal service. Act now!! Contribute early and often!! :) I hope this covers everything. If you have questions, problems, or comments, feel free to ask me personally or raise them here. Harumph. Well, finally got around to seeing Toys last night. I've seen every other Robin Williams flick, so I had to see it. Overall, I'd give it 3 outta 5. There was a little too much slapstick in it for me, but I concur that the sets and scenery were phenomenal! Also saw Olivier Olivier this weekend. *Cool* movie. I give it 4 or 4.5 outta 5. If you're an artsy fartsy type or even close to one, check this one out. I love any movie that is not served on a platter wrapped up in a cutesy little bow. (i.e. Thumbs down to any film needing a 'The End' to imply the obvious... *sigh*) I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I'm *sick* of contrived feel-good movies where the hero goes thru a 'rough time' but in the end gets the girl (or guy) and the happy-ever-after schtick. I guess Hollywood is afraid that a sad or thoughtful ending won't turn up the hordes of people they hope for. Bah, call me a cynic. Oh, footnote. Saw the Sundays on Thursday ;^) *GREAT* show. I think they were a little surprised at the excitement of the crowd. They just came thru about 4 moths earlier, and Harriet made the comment during the show that "Gosh, we ought to come thru every 4 months" The cheering tripled instantly. They did like 3 encores (which I suspect was more than they had planned) I went around back after the show to talk with them and got the chance to chat with Harriet. She's so sweet (and cute!) For those that would be interested and didn't already know, she told me she's a vegetarian (They had ordered some pizza and the delivery guy told the groupies that one of them had anchovies and I asked Harriet who they were for. She didn't know but said she was a vegetarian) ObHappy: So *anyway* When is HAPPY gonna tour down here? Many of us are patiently waiting. How about if we combiine our resources to work on Brian's idea as a combined Ectophile BDay present / Happy promotion tour. Ectophiles in various cities could chauffeur HR's group around their area, perhaps playing Doug's tape. We all could contribute toward her travel expenses. I'd gladly cheuffeur, including to the B&B hideaway in a private nature preserve with about 5 miles of nature trails, located 80 mi east of Dallas. With all the wildlife there she wouldn't need posing ducks. But there is a long lead time to get reservations for the "tree house", a fully equipped two bedroom house isolated and hidden in a grove of trees. Funny that Brian commented about this. Yesterday I overhauled my road bike while listening to all of Happy's CD's. Pausing at sunset, the evening quiet but for the birds and Ecto, I imagined Happy playing and creating music to a nature audience at the tree house. Music artists seem to get reviewed either when they have an album debut or when they visit town, whether performing to small or large audiences. Such reviews are good exposure. Hopefully Happy will tour more widely, so that more people will learn of and get to enjoy her music.
