She's an Israeli singer whose stuff I really like, but had despaired of ever seeing here in the States--until I found a CD of my fave album of hers, "Silk Road", at the local Tower. She records in Hebrew (which may block some from fully getting into the lyrics B-]), but the music is somewhat Ectoid, and she has a wonderful voice. I saw her perform in Tel Aviv in 1986, and she's got a powerful stage presence, too. If anyone sees this album, snap it up! "Minimum ethic: Do what you said you'd do. Impossible? There are many new ectophiles on the list since I last posted this information, abd I mentioned to Anthony in Australia that I'd explain to him about how I became a Happy fan, so once again I'll tell my tale of ectosynchronicity... One day, I was driving down the road when all of a sudden this amazing music started out of the speakers. Before long, I had to pull the car off the road and sit and listen; this music was in full contact with my soul! It turned out to be "Feed the Fire", and it was difficult to track down the album. I finally found it at 21st Century sound in Bryn Mawr, a good drive from Cherry Hill. All went well, as I enjoyed the album like any other fan. But then WXPN announced that Happy would be in concert at the University Museum theatre. I had tickets all of a sudden, as a friend of a friend bought a pair he couldn't use, and my friend knew I was bonkers over this music. At the concert, my wife and I found some nice seats right in the middle of the hall. We sat next to another couple near our age (I'm 46), and struck up a conversation about the eclectic makeup of the (sellout) crowd. It turns out that we are next to Happy's mother and stepfather! We talk at length about Happy and her life, and the concert begins. Now I was once a professional musician, and I've been to a lot of great concerts, but this one was just fantastic! Happy played for about three hours, and there were many stunning moments. I left my business card with Happy's mom, saying if there ever was anything I could do to help... Things calm down for a while, and then WXPN announces the CD release of the Back Catalog of the 1st 4 albums, with an interview on XPN followed by an in store appearance at 21st Century Sound. Of course, I'm there! The line to see Happy was long, but I recognized Kevin Bartlett from the concert and walked over and introduced myself. I told him that if Happy ever wanted to do a video, I could help. I'm a telecine colorist for a video postproduction company in Philly. It turns out that they really want to do a video, but are priced out of it for now! However, they are now a big step closer to realizing this goal (distribution is the next hurdle). It also turns out that Kevin knows some of the same people I do in Boston, where I worked before Philadelphia! We hit it off like old friends from the get-go! Then it's time to say hello to Happy. Clutching my CDs for her autograph, I approach her. She looks at me, does a double-take, and says "I know you! I know you from somewhere!" "We never met..", I say, mind racing. I should have said I was that friend from Phobos (I told her later), but when our eyes met there was a distant recollection, as if we had known each other in another life. Her manager, Susanne White, came over with Kevin, and we talked a while about music and video and plans and hopes and dreams. Soon it was time for me to go. I asked Susanne how the interview had gone, as I'd missed it (but had set my VHS deck to tape it!). She said it went well, but they wished they had a copy for themseves. So I told them that I had it on tape. "Well, that would be great," Susanne said, "but actually we're staying kind of far from here, so it wouldn't be too easy for us." "Where are you staying?", I asked. "Cherry Hill, New Jersey." Getting the idea? This is all out of my hands. This is ectosynchronicity! But one more thing! Since they were staying close by, I invited them over Sunday morning to pick up the tape. Susanne asked directions to my house, saying she knew Cherry Hill pretty well because she had grown up there. "Well, I live on a pretty small street; it's only two blocks long." I began. And as I proceeded to give her directions, her jaw dropped. It turns out Happy's manager grew up across the street from where I live. As a young girl, she used to play in my house with the daughter of long previous owners. To this day, we are in touch. At the Mann show, I provided them with video equipment. I keep Susanne up to date with news from here and from Ecto, over on the Internet, and generally just do whatever I can to help Happy's career along. I hope that soon I'll be able to get to work on a video for her. For those of you who have been through this story before, my apologies! For you newcomers, that's why I'm here! One more thing! A few days ago I posted a recommendation of the film "Toys". There was quite a response to this. Some of you seem to detest that film, others liked it. I just want to congratulate everone here on our diversity! After all, if we all liked the same things we would be a pretty bland group! But we all are here because the music of one woman has touched us all, albeit touched each of us in different ways. Let us treasure our differences and share our common ground! So long for now, and thanks for all the bandwidth! I really really wanted to meet Woj and Meredith and I am *still* really bumming that those plans got boffoed for such a stupid inexcusable reason. Blechhhhhh! Now it looks like I will miss The Duffmeister in is (very short) layover in Chicago... too bad, I could have driven him around town if I had been able to join him and the folks from gaffa-central. So Steve, you'll just *have* to plan a longer visit sometime (and ditto for the rest of ya). Just wanted to confirm that Ingrid K. is great, and the songs that move me particularly are the 3 last songs on the album, starting from the 3rd to last [I assume it's Latvian but if I didn't know better I would guess it to be Yiddish]. The Time/Lobster thing is also super (and superficially so simple!!). Finally, my latest most favoritest track off of the Aimee Mann CD (which you all should own 12 copies of by now, like me :-) is "I've Had It" [this song is so rich in double-entendre it sets my brain all aquiver], which I put on the Ingrid side of my cassette because the whole Whatever didn't fit on a single side... so those last three IK songs segue right into IHI. I pray that I can catch the Aimee Mann tour (I'll tumble for ya) which Imago insists is *going* to happen this summer. My digits are intertwined. I'm still looking for a fellow PG fan to go to the PG concert, July 11, in Chicago with. It's a steep $35, and if I have to pay for 2 (I bought two tix) then that other person had better really appreciate it. And then it turned out that their album has been delayed and won't be out until Tuesday... :-( Too bad, I might have been the first proud owner of the Clannad CD? ;-) And something completely different. Fellow Cherryh fans might appreciate this idea: When Cherryh gets around to writing that final gate story (in the Morgaine series), *and* somebody gets around to making a movie of it, what would be the perfect music for the ending? "Temporary and Eternal"! I know this wasn't Happy's ideas behind the lyrics, but they fit so amazingly well. Every time I listen to "Temporary and Eternal" I can't help thinking about that rather unusual pair of "heroes": Vanye: he is broken, far from free words were spoken, 'tween him and me "i had friends, yes, i was admired i'm so old now, feel so tired" Morgaine: "i can see the purpose now and all i've learned all the roads and where they've turned I can see, I can see everything, the total truth i'm ready for another youth" And the mood of the song would be perfect, too... Anybody know if Happy has read Cherryh? :-) Just noted this little Cherryh conversation today (it's from a mother/daughter reunion): "Here, don't let the tea cool - sit down, sit. God, you've grown so beautiful." "I was murdered! I spent a hundred damned years as a ghost, mama, where in hell were you when I needed help?" "Dear, I've had troubles, too" ;-) Jens P. That's an unfortunate by-product of Tandy and Bates getting star billing in the film, despite the fact that their screen time is less than a quarter of that of the REAL stars, Mary Louise Parker and Mary Stuart Masterson. Those two make the movie work, and the present-day scenes, with the exception of the final scene, really took the momentum out of the story.
