Strange day. :-) Au contraire. Take it from me--you immerse yourself in this list long enough, nothing you read here seems strange anymore :-) Last weekend, I stumbled onto Liz Phair's album, _Exile in Guyland_, and bought it sort of on spec, on the basis of the description I got from behind the counter. Take it from Sue (and me, for that matter): it's good, especial- ly if you're into that kind of stuff :-). This morning, there was a sign in the window of Rose Records to the effect that LP's disk was in stock "(at last)" [sic]. So I may or may not have been in the vanguard of a new artist's cult :-). Why I feel constrained today to qualify each paragraph with a smiley, I'll never know :-). Rose's window also stated that Janis Ian's new album was among the new arriv- als. Last weekend, an item in the paper reported that JI celebrated the occa- sion by coming out. The same story reported that Sinead O'Connor is now play- ing Ophelia in Shakespeare's _Hamlet_. Today, the paper reported that SO ran an ad in a Dublin paper, explaining the array of things she's stressed out over that have motivated her to lay off singing for the time being. >(this is kelly. she's RDT's own delirium. :) This is Mitch. Present were Maire and Ciaran and I'd guess somewhere over 100 "fans". After apologizing for being late, they launched into a setting of Yeats' "Down by the Sally Garden" (I believe that's the correct title). Maire singing, Ciaran playing 6-string and BVs. He has a lovely voice. Next they sang a song in gaelic the title of which I can not remember, nor could I pronounce it if I knew what it was. Maire explained that gaelic is their first language and thus they sing a lot of songs in it. She went on to explain that the title of the song means "matchmaker" and thus it was a song about said subject. ;-) Same lineup, but Ciaran had switched to a 12 string. And that was it for the "free acoustic concert." Not that I'm complaining! I had the sense to bring my copy of _Fuiam_ with me (the original Tara release, of course). There were a few other folks with old material to be signed; an awful lot of folks had the new releae of _Fuiam_ and the domestic release of _Anam_. One fellow surprised the Brennans by presenting the liner notes to their new album, which isn't due out 'til next week! I first handed my liner notes to Ciaran, who pointed to his picture on the cover (far left) and said, "Hard to belive, but that was me." (he's clean- shaven now). When I got up to Maire, I thanked her for the performance, which she brushed off as "raw". I told her "But that's the way I like it...raw and intimate. No huge arenas." She thanked me for the compliment and shook my hand. It was a Moment. ;-) And that was it. I'd never been to an in-store before, and was surprised at how it went off. All in all, it was a pleasant experience. If I'd had my head on straight, I would have asked Maire if she'd heard Loreena McKennitt's setting of Yeats' "The Stolen Child." If I'd had it with me, I'd even offer to let her hear it. But as it was, I had my tape with _Parallel Dreams_ and _To Drive the Cold Winter Away_ in my Walkman. NOTE: the DC Tower is *finally* carrying the Hapster. Filed under the H's, but who am I to compain? They had two copies of VI and Ecto, and one copy each of VII and Warpaint. No Rearmament or Equipoise. I was tempted to switch them over to the Rs, but there were too many people watching. Jeff (who, despite his comments about intimate concert settings, dearly wishes he could afford tickets to tonight's show. But, that's okay; he's seeing His Name is Alive in 8 days for just $5. And Gabriel in 2 weeks for a ridiculous sum of money. ;-) |Jeffrey C. He said that SteveVanD and Klausnoe told him that he simply *must* visit Gaffa Central while in Chicago, so I'll be meeting him at the airport and, after showing him the "Cool Thing"(tm) in the United terminal, and a whiz around the People Mover, we'll be coming back here for a bit of an Ecto mini-party. We should be back here by, oh, say, 3:00pm. Anybody want to come over to meet the Man Who Is Not Duffers From England? Well, I'd love to meet him but I could not make it over there before 9pm. Will Steve still be around at that point? If so, I could give him a ride back to the airport too. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1993 18:33:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: Not to be confused with...
