When I hear it I can only think of the Whizzo Chocolates sketch from Monty Python's Flying Circus.:-) However, as little as I know about New Order, I think that they might be a band to catch. I've borrowed Low-Life from the library here and liked what I could grab from the mangled tape (tapes or cds that go out alot tend to get messed up a bit) and I have heard the new song Regret and rather liked it. Well, I would choose them over Anthrax anyway.:-) -Quenby ======================================================================== Date: 07 Jun 93 11:28:44 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: sweetie I just rented the movie Sweetie (interesting movie) due to the big press from The Piano (Cannes winner) (I forget the name of the director). I got a used copy of the CD at the closeout sale of the Dempster Record Exchan- ge a month or so ago, and they also had at least one new copy in stock, which would presumably have, if not already sold, been shifted to either their Morse or Belmont store. Of more utility to our friends in most of the world is the fact that a mail-order place in Los Angeles called Insomnia Records recently came out with a catalog, which lists _STS_ as a cutout for $9.50 CD, $6.50 LP. They also list Caterwaul's _The Nature of Things_ for $6.50 either LP or Tape. A recent thread concerns the song "Be Careful What You Say": >> It seems that there are two positions being argued in the song. One being >> that no matter how young you are, you have a right to your feelings and >> a right to express what you think. The chorus seems to be saying, watch >> what your saying, you're young and you don't know what you are talking >> about. Am I correct about this and does anyone else have any thoughts >> on this song? >My take on this one was that the verses are putting forward the commonly >held point of view that you should always speak your mind and be honest to >the point of tactlessness with people - it's sort of saying, "this is what >you've been told? Well, what *I* say is this..." and then the chorus, which >is Happy's advice to those people. Well, my interpretation has been the child/parent dialogue. To me the song deals with the feelings children get as society wipes out their spontenaity. Children and teenagers are continually admonished by their parents and teachers to be careful what they say, when their own instincts are to simply speak their mind! Happy is not one to discourage children to be themselves; "Look For the Child", for example, shows her position clearly. To me, the chorus is the parent/teacher. So I guess I'm closer to Quenby than to Anthony, though the nice thing is that whatever interpretation works for anyone is a good interpretation! By the way, Anthony, that -foop- dates back to an earlier post I did about AM radio DXing, and represents the sound of a carrier being dropped, allowing more distant and exotic stations on the frequency to come in! (Though I like the squirrel concept!) On another note, I wanted to ask again if people are still getting their posts returned after they've made the net! I know I am, and it's a little disconcerting. I always go back to my files and make sure I see my post... Regarding the live concerts: I was at the Philly concert (not yet an ectophile, just a rabid fan having his first taste of ectosynchronicity) and I have to state that it was one of the very best musical experiences I've ever had! So many times I was covered in goosebumps, like when Ray Hit a low note in "Feed The Fire" that wasn't on the album (for that matter, there was no bass guitar on that album cut!). The concert was rife with what I call "moments"; instants of shock and recognition. At the time, the only album I had heard was Warpaint, so most of what was played was new to me. It was three of the most wonderful hours of my life. Hope everyone is well! It's an incredible disc, and I'll be eager to see how other musicians interpret her music when the benefit disc comes out. Also picked up the debut disc from Jenni Muldaur, which is just absolutely amazing, IMHO. She's Maria "midnight at the oasis" Muldaur's daughter, and her voice is somewhat reminiscent of her mother's, but has other nuances all its own. We just saw a wonderful movie, Toys, with Robin Williams. Rented it at the Videostore, it just came out on video - WOW! I sincerely recommend this film for all ectophiles! A spacy, surreal treatise on war toys and peace toys, funny and knowing, silly and smart. Music by Trevor Horn, performed by Tori Amos. Enya's in there too. All great. Surreal like Brazil but more positive and hopeful. Follies of man on display. Incomplete sentences, my fault. Still in a daze. Only drawback, maybe a little longer than it needed to be (2 hrs), but well worth it! Directed by Barry Levinson. Also stars Joan Cusack, LL Cool J, and Robin Wright. A parable. Maybe. I really liked it. Thanks, and now back to your regularly scheduled list. Hi! I THINK it was a parable because it told a story that framed a problem. The story was about a toy factory split between making war toys and peace toys, the conflict personified by two brothers. Their father passes on in the beginning, leaving his toy factory to a son who is a military man. This general begins to make war toys that work. The other son is more of a child, and has to get his head together in order to stop the war stuff. The conflict comes to a head, as it must. The story is told in surreal abstract images. It is about our own divided natures, about how we raise our children, about deciding if we want to be a violent society or a peaceful society. Since the story works on multiple levels, and is about decisions of a moral nature, I kind of thought it might be a parable. Maybe my choice of words is wrong. I did say maybe! Whatever it is, it's a wonderful movie, and as an added bonus there's some great music in it (including a Tori Amos song I'd not heard elsewhere, "The Happy Worker", written and produced by Trevor Horn). Whatever this movie is, I still recommend it to all ectophiles! I know I am, and it's a >little disconcerting. I always go back to my files and make sure I see >my post... Yes. I also have a suggestion which may isolate the trouble quickly.. The mail that bounces is being kept in the queue at ns1.rutgers.edu for 3 days before bouncing, so if someone has an account on ns1 or can otherwise get on it and examine the mail queue, the offending address might be spotted that way (I'm not sure if the mail would be in the queue to "ecto" or to the *real* recepient). Anyway, the "mailq" command (if available) or "/usr/lib/sendmail -bp" can be run by users without special priviledge.. If the mail in the queue just says "to: ecto" then it would take someone with root priviledge to actually read a message in the queue and see where it was actually destined. All of the above depends on ns1 being a UNIX host... -ken d ======================================================================== From: mpower@jpmorgan.com Date: Tue, 8 Jun 93 12:23:48 EDT Subject: Toys robert@deepspace.nj00802.sai.com (Robert Lovejoy) >We just saw a wonderful movie, Toys, with Robin Williams. I thought it was too long by 2 hours also! Honestly, you liked it? Sure, the music was good, but the movie? Hell, maybe I just wasn't paying attention. I could appreciate some aspects of it (like the humungous amount of money expended) endless fields, plastic hair, bowler hats and so on, but the 'evil war toys vs. good fluffy toys' plot just didn't make it. Let me recommend Super Mario Brothers, with a cover of something or other (don't remember the name of the track) by the Divinyls in the soundtrack, as a movie replete with *unpretentious* silliness. cheers!
