Hi. It should be noted that "Suspended In Ecto" is no longer available. (Doug, you were supposed to take it off your list too) I've been thinking up a "Happy Misc. Pt. 2" tape that will include most, if not all, of the interview I did with Happy (that is, those bits that were included on the original Ecto SiG) and I was wondering what else to put on there. I made a tape of the CD bonus tracks for Mitch because he doesn't have a CD player, so I thought maybe the bonus tracks and re-mixes could go on the HM2. If someone doesn't have a CD player, they'll get to hear them. If someone does have a CD player, but just wants the bonus tracks, well, I don't really know what to say without sounding snobby and bitchy. Basically, I would *hope* that, if I do this, people with CD players will get the CDs from Happy when they're able to afford it. I'm assuming they'd have the cassettes, so they've already bought from Happy. If they don't have the cassettes, there's no earthly reason why they'd want the bonus tracks ahead of Meredith's sampler tape, so it should work out alright. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Besides the interview, and the bonus tracks, I would also put on the original versions of The Chase, If Love is a Game, I Win, and the others she changed (slight though those changes might be, in some cases.) I haven't done this yet, so I don't know how long the finished tape will be. It certainly won't fill up an entire 100 minute tape, so I'll have to decide if I'm going to leave a long space blank, or put something non-Happy on it. UNLESS.....I can get dubs of the interviews she did in Philly (one or both) and then add it to the whole. Bob? Oh Bob...??? Second thing about the FAQ. I am having trouble with the idea that H&K's phone number is included. Greg, have you talked to Kevin about this yet? I've given out the phone number in private before, but never in a public forum, which Ecto is, as are the readily-available archives. I *know* that no Ectophile would abuse having the number, but I still want to gently stress that, besides being Aural Gratification's phone number, it's also Kevin and Happy's *home* phone number, so please don't call unless it's absolutely necessary, and, if you do call, please call during "business" hours (weekdays, not weekends or nights.) H&K are both very busy and pre-occupied. Happy is, of course, working up the new album, getting ready to go into the studio (in August, not July) and Kevin, besides his regular ad work, helping Happy on arrangements, taking care of business and a thousand other things he does, is going to be producing the next Mitch Elrod album. I don't want to sound elitist by discouraging anyone other than Jessica, Greg or myself to call just to chat or get info, but if you do call, please make it short and "pertinent." The other night when I called Happy, it was the first time I'd spoken to her since the night of the Albany show (though I'd talked to Kevin twice on the phone) so even I don't call as often or talk to Happy as much as I used to. Ooops, I meant to say, "the night of the Philly show" because of course, I talked to her that night. Anyway, you get the idea...just be respectful of their home phone number the way you would any one else's. (I'm saying this mainly because some people might not even realize it's a home number and think it's a business phone, secretary, office & all. They're not to that point yet, though they will be someday.) People who have called H&K (Steve, Bob etc.) don't take this personal, because it has nothing to do with your calls to pass on information. This is just a general "just so you know" kind of thing for everybody. That's it, bye bye. Vickie ps, oh, Laura....my son Adrian (who just graduated from high school and has been accepted at KU in Lawrence, KS for the fall-YAY!) is a huge Cure fan, has been for years. I'd love to get the interview for him. He's coming up the 11th-17th of July to see the Cure here in Chicago. I'll show it to him then. I lent him a tape of Crane's music and he loves them. The story goes like this: Roy Rogers was an incredibly popular fast food chain in the DC area; they dominated in this area. A couple of years ago, Hardees bought the Roys chain from Marriott. They then ran a study to see whether or not it was a Good Idea [tm] to keep Roys as Roys or to change them into Hardees. The study said overwhelmingly that Roys is a Good Thing [tm] and We Really Shouldn't Change What Ain't Broke. The company then set about tearing down all of the Roy Rogers signs, putting up Hardees signs, mangling the menus (they kept the fried chicken, but that's it), and obliterating Roys that were too close to existing Hardees (well, okay, that makes sense). Apparently this was the decision of some upper-idjit who didn't care what the study said--he just plain didn't like Roy Rogers. A couple of years later, after watching their share of the market plummet, they've spent major bucks to put up Roys signs (albeit modified ones; they have the Hardees logo, in miniature, below the Roys logo), to bring back the original menu (with minor adjustments to include some of the few popular Hardees-specific items), and to run an ad campaign to convince everyone that the good food was back. Aural Gratification can't afford a blunder like that. Fortunately, I can't imagine any of the principals being so stupid. I forthwith asked what they were playing, and was told that it was the Story. They had no Story tapes in stock, so I took special pains to make a mental note. The following week, I related this fortuitous discovery to Vickie, who promptly pointed out that not only was she familiar with them, but that Greg was, if anything, more familiar with them. Groping for some kind of original, imaginative response, I then commented about the Story, something on the order of: not to be confused with the Stories, who qualified for the pantheon of one-hit wonders with "Brother Louie" in 1973. (It may, for all I know, still be available on a Rhino compilation or something.) Anyway, I am now pleased to again point out the latter facts for the benefit and use of all of you. My first impulse is to add something on the order of: may the Story ultimately rack up more hits than the Stories (as if that would take much effort anyway :-) ). But then it dawned on me that in view of the kind of stuff that's achieving hit status these days, that may not be an unambiguous compliment after all. I've just taken a look at gaffa for the first time in a week, and am struck by the smaller number of posts than usual. But that's neither here nor there. The point is that I stumbled onto Laura's post (dated a week ago Thursday) on k.d. lang's concert, and particularly her allusion to Lawrence Welk. This, in turn, reminded me of things closer to home, to-wit: Yesterday, while sifting through assorted objects in search of other objects, I got a good look at the design of my WHPK t-shirt. The central component is what I initially thought was a champagne glass, but on second thought may actu- ally be a martini glass (it's the kind shaped like a wide, shallow, inverted cone), with a lightning bolt around where the olive would normally be. This, in turn, aroused the free association of the t-shirt, and the station for which it stands, with Meredith's radio show until recently, Champagne Jam. My conclusion yesterday, as embellished further by today's observations, was/is that between Meredith, k.d., and maybe WHPK, our side may stand a fighting chance after all of recapturing the nexus between champagne and music.
