Please do not state >otherwise, it is an incorrect assessment. I am sorry. My statements were never meant to smite you. I meant no slur against the moderator of this list. Here is how I saw it: I read Gaffa and saw that Cynthia Rosas had returned. I had wondered what had happened to her. I read her post and saw nothing inflammatory. It looked like a perfectly fine post to me. Then I read Steve's post. I was irritated that some people can't take one step without their foot landing in a pile of manure. What I have seen of Cynthia tells me that she is one of those people. Here she had made a seemingly harmless post to Gaffa and wound up being slammed (or so I thought) on another list she probably doesn't even read. Now I have my favorite targets too, but they are mostly public figures. My favorite of late is our illustrious vice-president who apparently is living in his own private Idaho. (Wonder if he spells the plural of the word as "potatos" as I have seen so often.) It's a bit different when it is someone who could very well have been (and lately has been) me. Like someone at a cocktail party saying "Oh my GAWD! Where did she get that DRESS? How tacky!" Since it was intended to be accepted as humorous, I suppose I missed something. I like dry humor, but failed to see it in Steve's post. What got me was that no one else seemed to see fit for even a mild rebuke. "Come on now. Let's not be bitchy. :-)" I usually see that for even the slightest of slights. By that silence, I felt a concurrence from the general consensus. That triggered something in me that compelled me to write. >Also some people subscribe simply for the camaraderie that >exists. (So i don't get misinterpreted, by camaraderie i mean just >what the Oxford 8th says, a "mutual trust and sociability among >friends". (of course if you don't tihnk you're missing anything, >it's ok :) I don't mean to sound egotistical as though everything >posted here is intersting :) It has nothing to do with your moderation. Simply what I felt about what I saw from that amorphous mass that is Ecto. What I have seen would lead a less objective person to believe Happy was the Goddess Herself. I don't expect to read nasty things about her and I wouldn't wish to. But her music (while it makes many others *happy*) did nothing more than depress me. To my ears, she makes Robert Smith seem almost...cheerful. I know, he actually *is* lately...but you get my point. Maybe it's merely a conflict between the atmosphere and my personal feelings. It seemed like a "fuzzy blue" facade to me. The sometimes saccharine-sweetness of the atmosphere combined with what I felt was a bitchy swipe at someone combined to turn me off. Maybe it was wrong for me to write what I did, because it may have upset people unnecessarily. At the time, though, it felt right. >You say you 'know' this, not even that you suspect or feel this, >so hoepfully it is not asking too much to ask you to describe why. >Sincere thanks. Sorry. It was just an error in my choice of words. I meant that it was what I suspected and felt. I was speaking of the general consensus and not specifically of the moderator. I will attempt to respond to all who have posted to me in the same manner and in the order of receipt. I just thought it necessary to post to Jessica first. Just thought I'd share some good news... A friend of mine came in this morning, saying "That Happy Rhodes woman you worship is pretty great!". Of course, I asked "Where'd you finally hear her?" (He hasn't heard her from me because my Happy is on loan to a different friend). He said "Oh, they played her on 93.3 this morning." For those of you who don't listen to Philadelphia radio, 93.3 is one of the two major commercial classic rock radio stations in the area. Apparently, they played "Feed the Fire" sometime around 10am this morning. PS: Jess, could you perhaps switch me off of the digest and onto the direct mailing list? Nah, I tihnk if those were the things you felt (and they were, obviosuly) that it was correct to write. Eeeeeck! :) :) I love Rearmament!! I wouldn't ever want to be without 'The Perfect Irony, Friends You'll Be, I am A Legend etc. etc. etc. Yes, it's not perfect stylistically, but...well it's just plain wonderful. I love Happy's old stuff, and hating myself for saying this, but I find Warpaint to be the weakest in my book. It's the album I listen to the least, with exception to certain songs. I find the 1st4 lend themselves to evoking an emotional response, and Warpaint just leaves me hanging. Warpaint seems less serious to me....it does'nt give me the same general 'Happy' cloud that the others do...I can't really explain the feeling = it's just different. *gads my writing as become truly atrocious* :) Anyway, I can see why someone would think Rear. is one of the weaker albums, but in my book it is right on par with the rest. :) in her humble abode kIrI ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 18 Jun 92 20:53:51 PDT From: stevev@greylady.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: Rearmament I must agree with kIrI that there are songs on _Rearmament_ that I wouldn't do without--"The Perfect Irony", "For We Believe", "Friend You'll Be", "Crystal Orbs", "Because I Learn", "Ally Ally Oxenfree". Hmm, I guess that's most of the album :-). But there are also songs that, if not outright annoying, are at least not very interesting to me. _Rearmament_ is Happy's most transitional album, in that she broke away from the style in Vols. I and II, but had not settled on the new style that begins in _Ecto_ and continues in _Warpaint_. I would have to say that _Warpaint_ is my most favorite Happy album, though. It shows a level of maturity and musical craftsmanship that Happy never had before; although it also lacks some of the raw emotional edge that her earlier work has, it is so sonically perfect and thoughtfully constructed that I like it as much now as I did when I first got it. I talked to Kevin on Tuesday to report on Happy's airplay in Eugene; I hope this is not what prompted Jessica and Greg to remind us not to interrupt H&K during their preparations for the new album :-). I gave Kevin information on the two stations in Eugene that are already playing Happy and a third that might be worth promoting to. ======================================================================== From: kyrlidis@athena.mit.edu Subject: Re: Rearmament Date: Fri, 19 Jun 92 00:32:48 EDT Hi, hey i like rearmament, although Box H.A.P. annoys me....Which reminds me of something. 'Rearmament' is the only Happy album with a title out of the blue. [I might be horribly wrong, but the word doesn't appear in any songs] According to my Happy theorology Warpaint is a direct descendent of the BR era. It is overtly political and not as personal as anything on the 1st4 except maybe Lay me Down and In hiding. And hey, it makes perfect sense. Happy was 26 when she made Warpaint, and 19-21 when she recorded the 1st4. IMHO her maturity is evident. And judging from the new songs, she opts for the storyteller songs. [Watch her write an album full of personal emotional outbursts and destroy my theory... :) And BTW I am by no means saying that her evolution is predictable or anything, vampire songs weren't quite what I expected her new songs to be...] What I am trying to say is that I don't think Happy has reasons to write songs like 'No One here', and 'The first to cry' anymore. 6 months of anticipation til the new album....*sigh* Angelos PS. This, Interesting, especially since I've just finished the first book of the "Songkiller Saga" by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, where music (specifically folk music) plays the main role in saving the world against the attempts of some devils to destroy it. So the devils try to destroy music first, but some singers find out what power lies in it and are able to fight back with music (well, I think that will happen in the next 2 volumes). > If you come across this book, read it.
