I've been listening to them backwards so I get the new songs first...can't really write any impressions about them yet though the level of maturity is clearly evident going from vol.1 to ecto. Aside from having a good listen, in between positively working my ass off here at home...believe you me, trying to unpack 4 years of accumulated junk from school is a real pain! :) But...i've been jamming on my new bass that I bought while I was in Buffalo. I finally can finger twiddle to my hearts content...and on this wonderful fretless my finger twiddles sound bloody excellent :) :) Question: was there a song that Happy reworked for the cds. I remember hearing, somewhere, that she was going to re-do a song. Did she do this, and which song is it....nope I haven't listened "really" carefully.. well back to work...well ok...play Yeah Bulls!! kIrI :x ======================================================================== Date: 17-JUN-1992 00:01:09.72 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: Stoff (tm) Hi! Envy's not needed! We're .all people, right? Well... I guess you kind of have to let .people be people, not bigger than life... That is true. I don't think of Happy as bigger than life, though- or at least I don't think I do. And of course I will send you a copy of that, I promise with more alacrity than the last batch! (Have they arrived yet?) Steve notes: .In what must be some twisted sign of cosmic balance, our old .friend Cynthia Rosas has begun posting to rec.music.gaffa again. I noticed that too. Greg, I'm still lacking a Connecticut job- wanna go into business? I'm sure we could think of something to do. That's SUCH a good description of the way she is in person. She'd mutilate you if she knew you'd said that, too. :) One more thing: I thought I was hallucinating last night (this morning?) when I saw it scroll by in the download, but lo and behold- she really was invited to play in a concert with the likes of Joan Armatrading and Peter Gabriel!!! Wow. I was immediately reminded of what she said in the interview with Vickie on the Suspended In Ecto tape: about how she would love to perform in benefit concerts to use her influence to help other people. Well congratulations Happy, it looks like you've gotten there! (P.S. During All Things Considered tonight, they played Marta Sebestyen's "Tavosz Tavosz" as one of the musical interludes. I wonder how one goes about sending them musical suggestions? Something to do with Happy's music, something to do with the people it attracts, something to do with the tone set up by the list's founders and MFPs (most frequent posters) -- thank you all, especially Jessica and the footah :) So, is anyone else as obsessed with "When the Rain Came Down"? What an amazing song. I can't believe that Happy never released it before. I find it drifting in the back of my mind these days more frequently than any other of her songs. Maybe it's just a stage--or maybe it's Seattle's drought... My husband (who just subscribed tonight--heh, give him a big ecto welcome) just noticed that Tori does background vocals on Ferron's latest album, _Phantom Center_ (Chameleon Records, 1990). Interesting--she's singing with 3 others and there are a couple of times you can really hear here. It's also made me wonder whether working with Ferron was a _little_ bit of inspiration for LE--for those of you who don't know her work, Ferron is a dynamic singer who writes very open, confessional, sexy songs about her life and Lesbianism. She doesn't pull any punches with her lyrics, in much the same way the songs in LE is, and she's very upfront about her life and experiences. I wouldn't say she's either the singer or songwriter that Tori is, but she's still an powerful performer because of her honesty. Interesting to speculate on anyway... Like many of you it seems, I acquired Warpaint because of the all the gaffa chatter. My other favourite artists are KaTe (of course), Tori, Enya, Clannad, Capercaillie, Runrig, the Alan Parsons Project and a huge number of `progressive' rock bands from the very famous (Genesis, Yes) to the extremely obscure (Arrakeen, Galahad and many more). Howdy, Uh, well. I finally listened to all of the Happy sampler that Meredith kindly sent me and I have come to a conclusion. She sounds overall more like Alison Moyet to me than Kate. Oh yeah, the vocals on some of the earlier tracks sound a bit like early Kate and the harmonies too, but for the most part it's Alison Moyet. To my ears, that is. I can't stand Alison Moyet. Sorry. The lowest voice I like in female vocalists is Tracey Thorn's. Not that I'm lookin' for a Kate clone, but I did first read about Happy on Gaffa. I don't really see the reason for comparison. I'm not sure what the one fellow meant by "twisted sign of cosmic balance" because Cynthia Rosas posted to Gaffa after a long absence. I read her post and found nothing at all offensive about it. However, the post commenting about her return sounded a tad bitchy to me. I recollect that's what Cynthia was accused of and why so many people dislike her. Perhaps, but she did it with a sense of humor. Something that fellow's post was completely devoid of. It was as if Hitler himself had come back to life and had the gall to post something to Gaffa. I am for free speech but want no part of a forum that would crucify one person for her opinions, yet allow someone else to say something just as nasty because it is politically correct to throw stones at that particular person. Give me a good flame war any day over any such covert backbiting. Neither are good, but one is more honest than the other. I subscribed to Ecto because I heard so much about Happy and how she was on the same level as Kate (and in some people's opinion's, higher). Well, some people like Mariah Carey better than Kate too. I happen not to. While I respect Happy for her ability to write and perform music, I cannot say I enjoy listening to it. I like gloomy music on occasion, but I find The Cure fills that capacity just fine. I know dissenting opinions about Happy are not welcome here and I can hear the cries of "BLASPHEMY!" even as I type. That is why I would like to unsubscribe at this time. It's just not my scene, folks. Enjoy. Thank you thank you thank you! It probably would have been a year before I noticed this on my own. I got _Phantom Center_ most of a year ago, and I clearly remember looking through the liner notes to see if their were any musicians I recognized. Naturally, it was about 6 or 8 months before I'd heard of Tori from the Europeans love-hounds lucky enough to get the early release of _Little Earthquakes_. (I wonder if the Tower employee from last January remembers the weird guy who pestered him about the release of some chick named Tori Amos' album) >Interesting--she's singing >with 3 others and there are a couple of times you can really hear here. There are only 2 other BV singers on _Phantom Center_, and yes, you can here Tori quite clearly in a number of places..."Harmless Love", "Indian Dreams," and I think it was "Heart of Destruction." I'm also pretty sure that it's Tori singing sort of an "ooooh" on "Stand Up (Love in the Corners)". She's cerrtainly singing BVs on that song, but the background part is very tight and you can't distinguish her voice too well. >It's also made me wonder whether working with Ferron was a _little_ bit of >inspiration for LE--for those of you who don't know her work, Ferron is a >dynamic singer who writes very open, confessional, sexy songs about her >life and Lesbianism. I wouldn't say she's either the singer or >songwriter that Tori is, but she's still an powerful performer because of >her honesty. I'm extremely curious about how Tori ended up singing on this album in the first place. Was she just a studio singer? Did Ferron hear "YKTR?" and say "yes, I want _her_", do they know each other socially? So many questions! For you Tori freaks: I don't particularly recommend rushing out and looking for this album unless you like folky, quirky singers who have interesting but not particularly pretty voices. Ferron's got a neat voice, but it's not in the league of what most folks here usually talk about. She's also not a particulartly great guitarist--just sort of adequate for her music (though the album does have a guy playing all sorts of stringed instruments, including e-bow (Greg? are you reading this? ;-)). Lots of nice fiddle too. ObHappy on how I bought _Phantom Center_: I'd been babbling about Happy to a friend of mine down in Texas, and he finally ordered Volume II. He said, though, that since he'd done that, i had to go out and buy an album by one his favorite singers, about whom _he'd_ been babbling. He disliked Volume II and I disliked the album I bought. Strangely, though, while he's come to sort-of like VII (or at least not dislike it), I've come to really love _Phantom Center_. (I suppose when you pay ~$18 for a CD you're willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and listen to it until you like it). The friend has since heard and loved _Warpaint_. I've been meaning to order him a copy for ages and keep forgetting about it when I have the money and being broke when I remember that I haven't done it. It *was* surprising to me too that Vickie and Cynthia reappeared simultaneously, and I loved Vickie's attempt to convince people they are not the same person. :) :) >I am for free speech but want no part of a forum that would crucify one >person for her opinions, yet allow someone else to say something just as >nasty because it is politically correct to throw stones at that >particular person. But freedom of speech has been IMHO the biggest attraction of ecto. And I don't think everyone here shares the opinion that 'it is politically correct to throw stones' at anyone!! Don't make assumptions about the subscribers to ecto, based on the opinions of one person. Freedom of speech allows for differing views and opinions. >I know dissenting opinions about Happy are not welcome here and I can >hear the cries of "BLASPHEMY!" even as I type. I welcome dissenting opinions about Happy. Reviews and criticism in art and science are a very important part of progress. As long as they are based on an objective judgment and aren't one-line write-offs. In fact, they usually trigger the most interesting discussions that bring out a lot of interpretations of various aspects of the work involved that wouldn;t be discussed had the work been praised. For any newcomers, the Happy Birthday Project is designed to put together a couple of tapes holding songs and greetings submitted by Ectophiles in honor of Happy's 27th birthday on August 9th. Any song that you would like Happy to hear can be submitted. Spoken messages are particularly encouraged and solicited, including not only introductions for your musical submission, but what Greg has characterized as "interludes and comments about life, Ecto, and everything." If you wish to contribute to this project, two actions are needed. One, e-mail to Klaus (klaus@inphobos.w.open.de) the name and length (if available) of your chosen song and whether you will include any spoken content. Two, send two C-100 cassette tapes including your musical and spoken contributions plus return postage to the Ecto non-electronic mailbox: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 USA Greg will be coordinating the actual assembly of the recording. (Thanks, footah!) The final result will be dubbed and mailed back to all contributors. Non-contributors can receive a copy of the HBP tape through Doug Burks' tape dubbing project [dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu]. We are still looking for ideas of how to collect spoken messages from people who have no way of recording their voices. Any suggestions are welcomed! We are also looking for volunteers to help copy and mail the final tapes. Time is short! Act now! Lots of nice fiddle >too. I agree with this description of her voice. She's been described before as "Canada's answer to Bob Dylan" -- good lyrics but can't sing. I'd also compare her to Tanita Tikaram as far as singing goes. As for the fiddle playing, if I'm not mistaken Ferron often has Barbara Higbie or Novi Novag playing violin on her albums. Barbara is probably best known for her collaborations with Darol Anger on the Windham Hill label and Novi plays with a group called the Freeway Philharmonic, I think. One of the best Ferron concerts I've seen was when she and Novi played here at the World Theatre (Garrison Keiller's old stomping grounds). A delight! I'd also second the comment about not rushing out and buying a Ferron album if you're more interested in voices like, oh, I don't know, *Happy's* maybe. Ferron will disappoint you then.
