Vickie ======================================================================== Date: 15 June 1992 13:35:22 CDT From: Subject: Vickie's back and ecto's got her, and other pearls o' rangensaft Needless to say, I share everybody's delight at Vickie's return to the status of active poster within our electronic secret society. While the demands of her job may indeed make her long commentaries less frequent than before, it occurs to me that just as more is not automatically better, so conversely neither is less automatically not as good. In Chicago, WBEZ airs _Echoes_ on Sundays from 5 to 7 AM. I managed to time shift the first 45 minutes or so of this past weekend's show, while not unex- pectedly falling asleep on the whole thing early in the game. It started with a guitarist named Esteban; did Happy appear on this episode, in which case I missed it, or am I still in time? My subjective sense is that even if she was featured on the show that aired locally, it may not be syndicated until later. To paraphrase Jack Webb, all I want is the facts, Bob Brown (or anyone) :-). Meredith makes the observation: >Mitch, I'm waiting for the day when the fact of our karmic connection is >going to come out and someone will confuse us. When that happens, I'll die >of laughter, and I assume you'll be doing the same thing? :> That reminds me of a funny thing that happened to me at a sociological con- ference I attended at the University of Chicago in 1984. The chairman of the department there had just been appointed dean of the social sciences division (he was recently kicked upstairs again, to provost of the university). At the banquet which closed out the proceedings, someone had hired a singing telegram person (or something of the sort) to deliver him a congratulatory message. As fate would have it, I more or less share his hair color, but not his mustache and cigar. Sometime between the completion of the food ingestion and the remarks of the after-dinner speaker, to the surprise of everyone but the person who hired her, a woman in a gorilla suit (at least, that's how I remem- ber it after eight years) came bounding into the room, and uttered at least once, in a high falsetto, "Oh _Dean_..." as she began her search for the real Edward Laumann. It is problematic, in retrospect, how detailed a description of him the mastermind gave her; I don't remember how many other possibilities she tried, but she eventually came around to me. She said once again "Oh _Dean_...," gazed at me silently (on the basis of this screed, you suppose I'd have any future writing turgid romantic fiction? :-) ), and I silently shook my head; she said softly, "no?" I seem to recall that she got it right on the next go; having finally located Laumann, she proceeded to deliver the message, apparently to the tune of some once well-known but still undisting- uished show tune; and we all finally got to hear some substantive sociology. The punch line to all this, of course, is that Meredith is in excellent company when it comes to people I'm apparently at risk of being confused with :-). It may be symptomatic of how closely I follow basketball that the thought that came to me did when I learned that the Bulls had won the championship. I was on a bus en route home from the cinema, having been assured--apparently inacc- urately--by the transit authority that express buses would be running later than normal due to a scheduled festival downtown. When none manifested them- selves, I ended up on a local. As it snaked its way across town, we were eventually entangled in a cacophony of running, exulting people, careening cars, and honking horns. Somehow, it was communicated what it was all about. Somebody on the bus observed that the last time Detroit won the title, there had been shootings in the streets. Somehow, I got the misimpression that the Bulls had beaten Detroit rather than Portland. As I walked home from the bus stop, only blocks away from arterial streets plastered with squad cars and cops with riot gear, I thought to myself that if I were a disk jockey, I would have commemorated the occasion by playing "We Almost Lost Detroit," by either Richie Havens or Gil Scott-Heron (I forget which), from the _No Nukes_ soundtrack. Now that I know who the real opposing team was, I still wonder what the local crowds might have done to the cutout of Michael Jordan on the facade of the Nike Building. Perhaps they were planted Oregonians, who instead of celebrating the Bulls' victory were taking violent revenge on the behalf of our beloved Portland Trailblazers. But nah, Oregonians are just too nice. While I would expect raucous celebration in Portland (and much of the rest of the state) should the Blazers win the title again, I just betcha our parties wouldn't look so bad on the 11 o'clock news. I'm not a big TV sports fan, but I am coming dangerously close to understanding basketball as a result of the Blazers' recent successes (and, alas, failures). ObHappy: I requested "Feed the Fire" for tonight's "Women in Music" show on the KAVE. Alas, Christina could not find her Kate Bush CDs, but she will be playing Tori Amos. I also hinted that she should try ordering a CD from H&K for the station; I don't mind lending out mine for the good of Happy, but I'd love to see the station have their own permanent copy that any of their DJs could play it. Although I'm thinking this does give me an excuse to call H&K myself and have them slip the KAVE a promo copy if Christina doesn't get around to it soon. Now if we could just jazz up that "Women in Music" title . . . ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 15 Jun 92 21:50:23 EDT From: jessica@maurolycus.rutgers.edu Subject: Echoes show I have yet to get a chance to write about saturday in philly (which was WONDERFUL!) and i do promise to do so:) but a couple of people have mentioned the Echoes show and i thought i'd say this one bit. We got to meet Jeff Towne, the guy (well, at least one of the guys:) from Echoes, and we asked him, of course, about the interview. He said that a few days before they'd had a call, someone asking when the Happy Rhodes interview would be aired, and that they'd answered "What?! We haven't even done it yet!". He said they hadn't had a clue how someone knew about it, but the caller explained it had been on the newsletter. Anyway, I gave him the ecto information and he gave me his business card. He promises to let us know as soon as they know when it will be aired, but right now, they don't know yet. jessica ======================================================================== Date: 15-JUN-1992 21:42:01.02 From: Valerie Nozick Subject: thoughts what a fantastic day! logging on to find myself reattached to ecto, and to find that vickie's done the same. good to see you here again, and more importantly, good the see that you're feeling better. on the same note, welcome back kiri. i can only imagine what you must have gone through, but from my own experiences, i know that the human body and mind can perform miracles when it has to. i hope you have a good friend to whom you can turn when it gets bad, and i hope you know that both you and your mother have our love and support. ----- well, i found the station soon to be deluged with happy requests here in atlanta. it's 88.5, and i turned it on to the tune of sarah mc. 2 songs later they played tori. i wonder if they take local residents as deejays? once i find out from which college they broadcast (there are a million colleges in atlanta), i'll attack. in addition, i just got to see the 'crucify' video on vh1 (it's one of their new clips--i watched a new clip show just to see it). i'll reserve judgement on it, tho', for now. it always takes me a few viewings/listenings before i like anything. Steve!! Kevin and Suzanne would *really* like to know the name of the Oregon station(s) playing Happy -- could you repost the info or call them or mail me or something... likewise, *anyone* who gets a new station to play Happy (go Val!) should post or let AG know directly -- Suzanne will followup with a call to the station, and this is the most effective way to get radio and retail contacts... i found out where my CDs are... on H&K's kitchen table (or something like that) -- Kevin didn't know to which of my addresses to mail them. for reasons that must have made sense to him, he called jessica, but not me, to ask where i was, and of course jess was out of town... *plus* i had ordered a set for Klaus, but Klaus sent an order for two more complete sets, so Kevin was a bit confused... (as am i! Klaus??) so, after a while we got in line and talked to Happy for a bit... she was being utterly charming, *quite* stunning in a white jacket and grey legging-things... (i stammered something along the lines of "you look gorgeous" and she looked over her shoulder, then said "you talking to me?" ;) after a bit of ecto gossip (Happy tried digging and prodding -- hardly necessary, since i *am* an open book ;) and a few autographs (caught, i believe, on video by Bob Brown) jess and i wandered off... we talked quite a bit through the afternoon with Lenny, the owner of 21st Century Sound, who is a delightful person and a Net lurker (he reads r.m.gaffa, amongst others) jessica gave him the ecto address -- in fact, jessica gave out e/snail mail addresses to *lots* of people :) it is *quite* exciting to meet so many Happy fans who aren't either on ecto or Vickie's converts (no insult to V. intended -- in fact, i suspect she understands exactly what i mean -- these are *real* honest-to-goodness off-the-street fans!!!) after a while we all moved out to the street so the smokers could smoke (that includes Happy, of course, and Kevin... *sigh*) Charlie, jess and i zipped down to the local musical instrument store -- i wanted to buy a keyboard stand but they were fresh out... when we returned, jess spoke with the "Echoes" guy, and we watched Happy deal with a political-guy-on-a-bicycle -- i mean, he just rode up, rode right up, and started quizzing Happy on her political views... mondo oddo, but Happy handled it quite well, and said some interesting and clear things on "the drug war" (she felt the hoopla was a means of avoiding the real issues of economic inequity which create the market and circumstances for drug sales), the death penalty (c.f. to live in your world) etc... after that, jess and i retired to the back room with Happy, Kevin, Suzanne, and Lenny, where we chatted for a while longer... some tid-bits: Happy is not very impressed by Sarah MchLachlan, but is quite so by Tori Amos... Happy confessed to being terrified by these events (e.i. public appearances) -- this was *not* evident in anyway, but i don't doubt her in the least... :) check this out: one of the 21st Century Sound employees told us about a woman who had come into the store asking about Kate Bush -- she had heard "rocket man" on the radio and wanted to know who this person was... after a few minutes of description from the store person, she stppoed him with "so, she's kinda like Happy Rhodes"... *grin* i got a hug from Happy *big*grin* Suzanne says: bug your local radio stations!!!!!!!! Bob already mentioned the possibility of a concert in Philly in Sept. with Happy, Peter Gabriel, and so on... i hope i hope i hope :) anyway, i am sure there are things i am forgetting... we spoke with a lot of the other fans there -- nice people all. i asked for a handful of warpaints, and actually bought another three (i give them away all the time -- one is already gone! ;) all in all, it was a wonderful time... :) sorry if this rambled a bit -- it's late, and anyway words weren't made for footahs! -greg -- gb10@gte.com -- "if love is a game, i win" -- HR ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 16 Jun 1992 12:38:23 +0800 From: Ken Taylor Subject: Benefit Concert Angelos said: > It occured to me that if Happy *and* Peter Gabriel perform together in the > benefit that Bob talked about in Philly, who would be better than Happy > to sing KaTe's part in _Don't Give Up_? I'm not very familiar with Happy's lyrics, and with her music, either (except the songs of Klaus' best of tape. I got the lyrics from the FTP-site but didn't make my way through them, yet). Suffice it to mention, that the atmosphere in gaffa isn't as cozy at all. Some of the Kate-fans tried to expel the Tori-fans (and Happy-fans as well, I've heard) in a very rude manner, and that's obviously *not* the merit of Kate!! I can't believe this to be possible here. Not to forget, that most of the topics in gaffa are about Kate and her music. That's why it will never occur to me to reveal my deepest thoughts to that group. You can gain the experience with every person you meet. You won't confide in somebody who is talking about trivialities, only. (don't want to call Kate and her music trivial, of course!!) Re: Ooops! When I felt down, I listened to very sad and melancholic music (especially Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze) and felt much better afterwards. Then I started making music by myself (first guitar, then keyboards), which had a much better effect on me. I had the possibility to express my feelings through my music.
