Here's a recap - My friend Charlie came over at noon, he was ready. My daughter Jodi (age 13) who just *loves* Happy's music and would be meeting her for the first time was more than ready. She had on her Ecto-shirt and had a "Jodi Brown original color drawing for Happy gift" in hand. I was ready, but I didn't want to leave till the interview on WXPN started so I could get a tape rolling. The interview started at 1, my wife Gail got the tape started, and we were off. I listened to the beginning and end of the tape and it appears that it came out fine. I'll listen to the complete interview (about 45 mins.) today to make sure it's ok and I'll send a copy to Doug for y'all. On the way down we had a good time listening to the interview, which was very good. Happy sounded in great spirits and Helen Leight (who interviewed her and is a *big* Happy fan) did a fine job. You will all enjoy the interview. H&K had a nice dinner with Helen on Friday evening. After a few brief stops we arrived at 21st Century Sound at around 2:45. While driving by the front of the store I spotted Jessica and Greg and blew my horn at 'em. They looked up with a "who was that??" expression as I wizzed by 'em to look for a parking place. Finally got parked and headed for the store. When we walked in their was a bunch of people milling about and I quickly spotted Jessica and Greg. It was great to see them and I enjoyed the conversation throughout the afternoon with them. There was a big display of the 1st four with lots of copies for folks to purchase. Next to the display was a stool where Happy was going to perch herself for the signing. Jessica and Greg stepped out to get a quick bite to eat and I spent some time with Lenny, the owner of 21st Century, talking about stuff and things including bringing Happy back to Philly for a concert after the first of the year. Right on time at 3PM I spotted Happy, Kevin and Suzanne sneaking in the door and they headed to the back room to get ready. Happy was dressed in white and looked great! After a couple of minutes, Happy came out and prepared for the long line of fans, some of whom had mucho CD's to have signed. One guy must have bought 20 of 'em which he bought for friends. Jodi and I were up front in the line. Jodi presented Happy with her artwork and Happy and Jodi had a nice chat about it. Jodi was *thrilled* and nervous. I think Happy was intrigued by a "young" fan. Let's face it, most 13 year olds are mostly into mainstream pop/rap/disco. Happy signed the ECTO CD for Jodi and we stepped back to allow others to do their thing. We chatted with Kevin, Suzanne, Jessica and Greg and other fans till just before 5 when Happy decided to go outside for a break. We followed and a few of us joined Happy in conversation outside in front of the store. Happy and Jodi talked about Jodi's age and Happy said that 13 was a tough age. Jodi agreed. I had to leave about 5:20 so we said good byes and headed out. I could ramble on but because of a time constraint let me point out some highlights - 1. There is a possibility for Happy to play at a benefit concert at the Mann Music Center in Philly in September. She was *invited* to play. Also invited were Peter Gabriel, Joan Armatrading and others which Happy couldn't remember. Happy said that she doubts that Peter would come (although she and we all know that she would be thrilled), but that there was a very good possibility that Happy will play. It might only be a 30 minute set, but who cares! 2. The 1st 4 CDs are moving well. Tower Records in Philly is moving them rapidly. Apparently a second order was needed. Everyone is excited. 3. Happy is getting good rotation in LA. Kevin said that when #6 is released and they start a tour (Jan. Feb. timeframe) that they *might* go there first. Mainly because its warmer there in the middle of winter. I gotta run... If I think of anything else I'll post it. Jessica and Greg - It was great seeing you both. Jess, I enjoyed hearing about your adventures out west. Greg, I'm intrigued by your programming efforts. Hope you guys are successful getting that band together. Yep, Vickie's back. ;> This is cool- earlier in the day I adjusted my radio to pick up All Things Considered a bit better, and unknowingly turned it to a new station. Later I came in and flipped the radio on, thinking Gee, I really need to all ECHOES in the morning and find out if they're broadcast anywhere around here, and guess what was on? It's the Stamford/Fairfield CT NPR station, 91. something, from 9-10 pm on Sundays. Now I just have to find out when Happy will be on! Regarding the monsters: as pieces of artwork and expressions of Happy and her music, they're awesomely wonderful (and yes, kinda cute :). As album covers, they're the most detrimental things I could wish on her albums. Why? Simple. If I had no clue who Happy Rhodes was and saw _Ecto_ in Tower or any other record store, I would NOT buy it. I'd think it was some weird Goth-rock band who sang about death for fun and immediately dismiss it. Same for I and II- though I would tend to think "Metal" for those. The only covers of hers that would not stop me from buying are for Rearmament (which is WAY cool, imo) and Warpaint- there I would think, Hey, female artist, kinda cool looking, I'll give it a try. But I honestly don't think the covers are going to sell any records at all. :( kIrI- welcome back! Glad to hear your mom is doing okay- I saw a man walk by with one of those traction things on today, and wondered how you and she were doing. And happy graduation (regardless of what happened directly thereafter). ======================================================================= |Meredith A. Well I've had some busy weeks and I don't know when it's going to calm down again, so I really have to write about _the concerts_ now. After an extended weekend in Bruges (Belgium), which is a beautiful city, we saw Laurie Anderson performing in Duesseldorf on the 31st of may. Although I was not feeling too well that day, I enjoyed that concert very much. It was the "Halcion Days - Stories from the Nerve Bible" performance, which premiered in Sevilla (Spain) at the opening of EXPO'92. It was the first time I saw her live, if you don't count the "Home of the Braves" video. She attracted a crowd of approximately 600 people. The "Phillipshalle" was shortened for the concert by a curtain, possibly because vision is also very important for this show, and you wouldn't be able to follow it from the far end. The stage was set up with three projection objects, one being a plane, one a sphere, and the third a cylinder. On these film clips, words or just some moody clouds were projected through most of the show. Most of the music came from tape. There was only Laurie on the stage, 2 or 3 times with a puppet. She played live (presumably) some of the keyboard part, her sound suit, and occasionally used her electronic deep voice. Topics ranged from personal stories to social and political grievances, with an emphasis on the last two, but often triggered by personal experiences. Some of the songs and soliloquies were in german, and the translation was excellent, although sometimes hard to understand. I enjoyed that performance very much, and it wasn't hard to notice that the rest of the audience shared my opinion about it. Later, I found out, that the guys who run Xenox and Horga, the two machines that connect me to the net, were there as well. Nearly a week later, Friday 5th, Claudia and I were en route to Frankfurt (a 250 km ride) to see Tori Amos perform in the "Alte Oper", the city's old opera house. Three months ago, she performed in the lobby of the venue. This time, the ticket said "ANOTHER EVENING WITH_TORI AMOS" (incl. the underscore :), she played the "Mozartsaal" and all of the approx. 300 seats were taken. But, I'm too fast. As we were planning to visit an exhibition in Speyer the following day, we took a hotel room near Frankfurt. After checking in, we drove into downtown Frankfurt, found the venue, left our coats at the coatroom and entered the "Mozartsaal". We were greeted by silence and darkness, and that 30 minutes before the show should start. Our assumption, that the concert had been canceled, turned into certainty after we asked in the lobby. It had been moved to sunday. :( So, now we had a hotel room, but no concert. On the way back to the hotel we consoled ourselfes by listening to Sarah McLachlan's concert in Boston, and we had a nice dinner at a greek restaurant, where we had some live music on an accordion. So, two days later we were going to Frankfurt again. This time by train, and after phoning the venue to find out if it hadn't been moved again. We were a bit late again, so the best seats were already taken. Tori was announced, and the audience was asked not to smoke and not to take pictures, as this would distract the artist. Wonderful! It's one of the major drawbacks of a concert in Germany that people are allowed to smoke and you end up smelling like ..... well, like you've been in a closed room with hundreds of smokers for two hours. She dressed in the blue and white swimsuit top and jeans, some of you have seen her perform in before. The concert was absolutely breathtaking! I've never been to a concert before, where the audience was so quiet during the songs. During "Me and a Gun" you couldn't even hear someone breathing. Of course the noise level was a lot higher after the last note of a song faded out. I'm not sure if she performed any new songs. I'm not yet too familiar with all the new tracks from the CD singles. I have to put those on a tape soon. Her performance was really impressive and it was a proof of the quality of her songs, being reduced to just piano and voice, and still they were great. Many of them even better. Like it has been noticed before, she doesn't talk much during the show. The first thing she said, was to apologize to the photographers, as she allowed them before the show to take pictures during the first song only, and she played only about 20 seconds of "Mary" before going into "Flying Dutchman". So after that she apologized and allowed them to shoot her during the next one as well. Of course she mentioned her Grandmother while introducing "Silent all these Years". Returning for the first encore she said she was surprised that we could clap in time, something the british wouldn't learn in a hundred years. (In Germany it is customary that the final appause gets rhythmic, if people want an encore. In fact, you can tell by the speed, how hard they want it. For Tori, it was ultrafast!) After the concert, we didn't have the chance to meet her, so my "Winter" CD5 came home unsigned, and all those messages and questions I took with me stayed unsaid. Well, I'm sure I'll have the chance to see her again. I also took the venues booklet with anouncements for June/July attractions with me, and here is what they said about this performance: "Little Earthquakes" Another Evening with _Tori_Amos_ After the sensational success of her concert in the old lobby we can welcome _Tori_Amos_ again in the old opera of Frankfurt. The 27 year old singer and pianoplayer, called "the siren" by her fans, spellbinds the listeners with the intensity of her singing, which noone can escape. Passion, violence and suppression are crucial points of her topics, by which _Tori_Amos_ causes "little earthquakes". Let this red-haired wonder of voice elope you into an diabolic atmosphere. So, tell me, who of you is calling her "the siren"? ;-) ___________________________________________________________ ( "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. ) ) Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond." Put me down as a long time Happy album monster cover fan. While I certainly agree (and have said so in Gaffa, if I remember rightly) that the covers aren't very commercial, I'm glad she left them intact. To my mind, they fit in very well with Happy's lyrics, which, as Vickie noted, are absolutely amazing in how accurately they describe suicidal depression. The monsters are just a visual manifestation of that. To answer Ken Taylor's questions, the CD covers still have the monsters. Rhodes I and II crop them inside large 'I' and 'II'. The cover of Ecto shows a fuller view of the creature on the Ecto tape. Bob, thanks for the Happy appearance report, and I look forward to adding another Happy interview to my tape dubbing project.
