This morning I was greeted by a package from Aural Gratification- the CDs are WONDERFUL. The extra tracks are great (especially the first one at the end of _Ecto_), and "Poetic Justice" just ROCKS digitally. I am one Happy Ectophile. After somebody wondered out loud in these pages last week about Deborah Blando's album, I made the time over the weekend to finally listen to it. The results are not encouraging. Her country of residence notwithstanding, Blando's album does not sound particularly Brazilian. If anything, it seems more like an attempt to be a Madonna knockoff than anything else. The real Madonna does it better. I like Happy's music better than Blando's. I even like Madonna's music better than Blando's. It may be instructive that immediately after I finished lis- tening to Blando's album, I felt impelled to start listening to Happy--the first time I've ever had this kind of a cleansing urge _in re_ recorded music. In fairness, it's not all as bad as the above jeremiad might imply. One of the cuts, "Other People's Houses," is actually a rather catchy tune, despite its mildly fatuous lyrics; though in order to reach this conclusion, I may have been bamboozled by the sporadic use of an accordion among the background ins- truments, evoking as it does the pleasant memories of the accordion bits in such far superior songs as Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Still You Turn Me On," the Rascals' "How Can I Be Sure" and possibly other classics of theirs, and the accordionlike (to me) synth bits on Happy's "Come Here." Another cut, "Innocence," actually displays a vestigial (if only that) sociopolitical consciousness, albeit nothing like that in Happy's songs. But be all this as it may, I'm sure that none of us should have any difficulty finding better albums than this one to commit our resources to. BTW#1: A couple of weeks ago, "The Midnight Special" on WFMT played a cut or two from the new Tracy Chapman album. The _Chicago Tribune_'s critic was right a couple of weeks ago: it's definitely OK, but nothing special. Certainly, she doesn't sound as innovative as she did doing essentially the same thing 4-odd (not to be confused with 4AD :-) ) years ago. BTW#2: The statements on Sophie B. Hawkins from the Strawberries flyer that Angelos shared with us seem to be the same as in the Coconuts flyer I saw earlier. They probably are both part of the same chain, Trans World Music out of (I'm ashamed to say) Albany, N.Y., and they are indeed overpriced most of the time. Coincidentally, the independent shop where I scored the large cassette stash the other day is folding because Coconuts is opening a store in the neighborhood, and the management foresees being ruinously undercut by Coconuts' sale prices, as distinct from their everyday high prices--the owner observed to me that C.'s sale prices often equal the wholesale cost to him on the same item. However, he felt that the potential existed for C. not to last more than a couple of years at that location, and that he was prepared to resurrect his record operation if that happened, and so save the pennies from his guitar sale operation in the maintime. I hope he does return in the end. Mitch Pravatiner ======================================================================== Date: 8 June 1992 13:27:20 CDT From: Subject: Errors and omissions BTW#3 (cf. my immediate previous post): Should you want one more superior alternative to Deborah Blando, I suggest what I think is called "Innocent Child," by Colorhaus. Good song, good video (they don't always coincide, of course :-)). They ran it on _Friday Night Videos_ the other night. So far, all I've heard from the new TC album is "Bang Bang Bang" which is hopelessly boring and predictable (though it does have a rather visually arresting video). I still like _Crossroads_ better than her first album, but any desire to get yet another album of the same old stuff has disappeared. On the other hand, Melissa Etheridge's new album shows her taking some enormous steps away from the style so prevalent on _Brave and Crazy_. I was disappointed with _Never Enough_ when I first got it--largely, I think, due to being shocked by the changes--but it's really grown on me since then. It's hard to believe that ME could write a great song that's backed with a beatbox, but it's true! I've always found her stuff to be danceable (how can you not get into a groove?), but some of her new material should probably be classified as _dance music_! Good stuff, and worth a listen. Another gift, the tale of her journey. She writes __Last night was special dark, dark with all possible stars, the milky way and quiet.
