I'm sure many of us--certainly those who've been on the net for a while--have given thought to some of the themes that are being brought up. We had a perfect example several months ago when Vickie was nervous about meeting folks at the Happy shows. I'm not really sure how much of this tied into being off her home turf--she has certainly always been eager to invite folks over! But she seemed worried that we wouldn't except and integrate her physical being with the net.personna we all know 'n love (and miss!) This net of ours is a strange 'n wonderful thing. I have been finding references to the goods and hidden evils of electronic fora for the last couple of months, and I really enjoyed them. Some more mainstream publications seem to get interested in this subject. For example the latest issue of TIME has an article on H.R. Perot's 'electronic town meetings' and briefly covers the concept of the net, and mentions flame-wars as the most common behavioral characteristic of this means of communication. Some other politician has apparently set up an account on CompuServe, and accepts e-mail (according to the Boston Phoenix)!! Date: Tue, 02 Jun 92 23:33:07 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Apparently MTV "premiers" a new video every weekday at 5:30. They call it a "first look video" and the few times I've seen this, it's been prefaced by a _very_ short interview with the artist. Tomorrow they'll be showing a Tori Amos video, which I assume will be "Crucify" as that's the second single. Just wanted to warn anyone who might want to set a VCR. Jeff |Jeffrey C. Deborah (I have a feeling the first name is spelt differently) Blando recently toured Australia to promote her debut album.. I saw an interview with her on one of the Saturday morning shows while eating my cornflakes and not really paying attention... (If I'd known there was going to be a quiz....) She is European-born, but brought up in South America. Apparently, she more or less learnt English while putting the album together as she had not used the language to communicate within her family situation.. I have heard only one song off the album, and enjoyed it very much. Anyone else got iny info on her ?? Is she known in the US ? The conjunction of this, and my recollection of an NPR story earlier in the day on how Seattle's vibrant rock scene didn't start with Nirvana, indeed going all the way back to "Louie Louie," somehow brought to mind a couple of Far Side cartoon panels from several years ago, which I thought might be especially amusing to marine biologists because they concern marine life. On the theory that they might also be amusing to persons who aren't marine biologists, I am pleased to relate them in our limited public forum. In the first, a boat is out on the open water. A microphone is hanging out of the boat, extending down to the lower depths. Aboard the boat, scientists with headphones and a tape recorder are listening to sounds from the sea. At the bottom of the panel, we see what they are hearing: a whale is singing "Louie Louie" into the mike. In the other, arguably a darker style of humor than the first, a fish (I think) is relating to his companions, "Ooh, icky icky. Something just went down, and it sure wasn't plankton." There appeared to be no single, unmistakable impli- cation of what the fish had actually eaten, but the possibilities indeed seem rather gorpy. Turning to land mammals, there now appears to be a good chance that my neighbor the alley cat is not up the spout after all. On Memorial day, it turned up for the first time in a while, with about the same abdominal distention as be- fore, but with a visible general weight gain. The next weekend, I asked about all this at a pet shop that happened to be around the corner from the cinema. They told me that in a legitimate pregnancy, the belly does distend quite a bit, and that it's possible that the true cause of her condition is worms. They went on to reassure me that worm pills, which can be added to the food supply, can be procured from veterinarians. Turning from animals entirely: The other night I saw a commercial for blue Jello, which got prominent play in the play-by-plays of Meredith and Valerie's party (the Jello did, not the commercial). The commercial pointed out that the stuff is actually a blend of blueberry and a substantial amount of raspberry, though they don't make clear what the need is for the latter in the making of Jello whose unique selling proposition is that it's blue. I was reminded of this further while reading of the recent scandal involving the com- position of premium fruit juices, in which drinks labelled cherry, guava, etc. were revealed actually to consist mostly of grape and apple, which can be procured under their own names for a fraction of the price in the instant case. Charles Osgood, in an essay on this yesterday on _CBS This Morning_, quoted W.C. Fields: "Who put pineapple juice in my pineapple juice?" I can remember when the so-called "juice racket" was centered on loansharking. Clearly, things change over time :-). Turning to the realm of the inanimate: I recently saw an ad for an optical shop specializing in vintage eyeglass frames, whose slogan is: More fun than radial keratotomy." I still haven't listened to it, but I suppose now I'll have to do that soon and get back to you with my impressions. The Chicago Poetry Festival is this Sunday. In the unlikely event that Jeanne is in Chicago that day, she may find it of interest. In the more likely event that some other readers of these pages may be in Chicago that day, they may also find it of interest. (I myself am not that heavily into poetry, so it's problematic of how much interest I'd find it.) I just got home and watched the crucify video. I think it's great! I'll comment more on it tomorrow, as it's pretty late now. I tihnk there are both good and bad things about it, as a video, but that overall it's wonderful. Very nice shots of tori :) The brief interview with her before the video was, well, brief, but she said some really wonderful things and the phone conversation with her afterwards was even better!! I loved what she said about women having very close relationships with other women, be they sexual or not, and that being wonderful and being able to sing "angie" is great. Well, i'll transcribe it if noone does before I get to it. She's a great person! I love the way she thinks and the way she expresses herself. She'll be back in the states in August, and i *will* see her, at *least* once, when the time comes :) I'm looking forward to talking with her as much as seeing her perform. for gaffa-ites, i must again say that sometimes the expression on her face is so much like an expression kate gets sometimes, that it's truly uncanny. eep! jessica , oops. too tired ot type straight! ======================================================================== Date: 4 June 1992 10:36:35 CDT From: Subject: Unreal virtual people? The response to the computer conferencing articles I threw out at you all has been gratifying. I now have a comment of my own to contribute on this phenom- enon. A few months ago, we had a thread on ecto which dealt with people's dreams on Happy, ecto, Ectophiles, etc. I recall a posting by Martin, which related a dream he had had about an ecto party at Vickie's apartment. I no longer recall all the details off the top of my head, but I remember vividly that he described his images of me, Vickie's apartment, and possibly Vickie herself-- images which happened to be quite at variance with their true appearance. The upshot, of course, is that this sort of communication lacks a certain kinds of information that are integral to face-to-face interaction, and that when personae are at odds with the facts, it can as easily be _sui generis_ as witting. Which doesn't make the whole thing any less fascinating a topic for analysis. Will Bill Clinton's sax riffs on Arsenio Hall last night go down in the annals as the latter-day equivalent of Harry Truman's turn at the piano, with Lauren Bacall perched thereatop? How severely might the difficulty of playing a saxophone as it's being sat on vitiate the analogy? If nothing else, this conundrum ought to provide an alternative to the Perot stampede as a subject for meditation the rest of this political year :-).
