Subject: ectopics (japan, velocity girl, mazzy star, ani difranco, alt.music.ecto) hello again gang... well, catching up with ecto wasn't as bad as i thought it might be. i switched over to the digest before leaving and, thus, was easily able to just deal with seven large files than about 70 small ones (plus, it's easier to pluck ecto digests automatically from the mailbox than it is to pluck individual ectoposts). anyways, i spent all of last week in japan and, as meredith guessed, my internal body clock is all confused. while i was over there, i'd wake up around midnight each night and start to fall asleep around noon. of course, by the time i left, i had adjusted so my body is still on weird hours (much to the chagrin of my neightbors downstairs ;). since the trip was a bit of a whirlwind tour (kawasaki -> tokyo -> wakayama -> sakai), i didn't have any free evenings to go record shopping. sigh. however, i'll be going back later this year to sakai so i should be able to hit the good record stores in osaka/kansai area then (anyone know of any good leads?). incidentially, if anyone would like me to pick up any japanese releases when i go back, let me know. i'll remind y'all again before i leave. anyways, i'm back and since my body thinks it's midday (even though it's near to midnight), i'm going to catch up right now. woo woo. meredith sez: >Anyway, there were a lot of snippets of songs from the new Velocity Girl disc >in the profile, and they all sounded rather fun. I *hated* their first album >and thus have avoided the new one until now, but I'm going to check it out >soon-- I'm sure woj has it somewhere. :) actually, i don't. after velocity girl released _copecetic_, i decided that they were a one-hit wonder (the one-hit being the most wonderful "my forgotten favorite," from a single on slumberland records) and that i only needed to get their singles (which are collected on a cd ep also on slumberland). however, i think that their new single is pretty nifty and bought the cd for "sorry again." it's been taking up some time in the cd player so i just might buy the album one of these days. klaus sez: >Hey, someone interested in a WorldCon in Duesseldorf in 2003? :) Chris (MONTVILLE@zodiac.rutgers.edu) sez: >I found out about Happy when I was browsing through the web >almost a year ago... someone had linked one of the Rutgers >home pages to the ecto archive site. said someone was our beloved listgoddess and ertswhile-new joiseyan jessica and the much-missed and also beloved greg bossert. as with neil k. guy (he da man), they learned all their html knowledge doing fun stuff (like the ecto archives). Michael K Curry asks: >Does anyone have any comments about Mazzy Star? paul "black-garbed figure" cohen has pretty much given you the band history so i'll pass on that. i'll just add my opinions: _so tonight that i might see_ is okay but doesn't hold a candle to _she hangs brightly_. as with neile graham, that album more or less defined the summer of 1990 for me. i managed to catch mazzy star live twice that summer. one show was a brilliant performance in a smokey, darkened club in new york city's east village which i've forgotten the name of. the second time was at the beacon theatre when they opened for cocteau twins. this show was not so good since they were plagued with all sorts of sound problems. hope sandoval has a darling voice but a touchy temper - she stormed off stage after about 20 minutes never to reappear. the rest of the band soon followed. i've heard similar stories from others who saw them when they toured to support _she hangs brightly_. let that be a lesson to you would-be mazzy star concert-goers: they can put on a great show but they are extremely tempermental - if enough bad things happen, they'll just blow out of there. i realize that this is not exactly professional but under the circumstances, i can understand their actions (at least that one time). jholt@pchem1.rice.edu (Camber the Heretic) sez about ani difranco: >Hmmm.. let me try to describe her music. Most of it is her playing the >guitar and singing, without a lot of backup (although I might be wrong, >since that's all I tend to notice). militant, acoustic rock is usually how i describe it (though "militant" is, perhaps, the wrong word to use). while most songs are unaccompanied, she occasionally is joined by a drummer. two features immediately struck me. first, her guitar style: on fast songs, her hand is a percussive, frenzied attack on the strings; on slower songs, her strumming more melodic than picking. musically, she's totally unique and a refreshing breath to what i think is a tired genre: the solo, acoustic woman singer/songwriter. second, her voice is incredibly honest. she has no masks and no pretenses. while this is hinted at on her studio material, it shines through live. while i have not had the chance to see her yet, one of her performances was broadcast on the cbc's hot ticket program a while ago and someone sent me a tape of it. yow! >she does a lot of social commentary, but it's really energetic stuff. >She also does a fair number of bisexual/lesbian songs too. you're right about both points but what sets her off in the field of socially/politically active songwriters is that her messages are not pounded into your head. her politics are woven throughout her music but instead of being her sleeve's color, it's its warmth. >Lets see... she's on an independent label called righteous babe records >(I think) and I can get you more info if you want. righteous babe records = ani difranco. all five of her records are self-released sans major label connections (sound familiar?). they are the self-titled debut, _not so soft_, _imperfectly_, _puddle dive_ and _out of range_. there is also _like i said_ which compiles some tracks from her earliest albums. i haven't heard _out of range_ yet (soon to be ordered) so i'd say that _puddle dive_ is probably the best place to start. you can order any of her tapes/cds or ask to be put on her mailing list by sending a note to: righteous babe records p.o. box 95 ellicott station buffalo, ny 14205-0095 each cd is $15 and a tape runs you $10 (new york residents add sales tax). postage is $1 per item. oh! almost forgot: you can also order by phone. call 1-800-on-her-own (that's 1-800-664-3769 for the phone-impaired ;). michael sez: >what should us Ectophiles do about a.m.e.? good question and one i've been mulling over ever since reading the a.m.e. intro file over the weekend. personally, i'm a bit bothered by the newsgroup. rather, i should say that i'm bothered by the use of the word "ecto" in the newsgroup name. "ecto" is *this* mailing list. the newsgroup was created because alan ezust didn't have time to read this mailing list but still wanted to have a place to talk about ecto-like stuff. since the mailing list is not in any way related to the newsgroup, i'm perturbed that both share the same name. i'm all for happy talk on usenet but i don't want people to be mislead into thinking that the mailing list and the newsgroup are one in the same and, honestly, i'm annoyed by alan's reasons for creating the newsgroup as reading the newsgroup won't take any less time than reading the mailing list. personally, i think happy talk on usenet belongs in rec.music.misc, alt.music.alternative and/or alt.music.alternative.female and that alt.music.ecto should either be renamed or rmgrouped. hmmm. not an upbeat subject to end on. so, i'll just plug veda hille before signing off. kudos to luke doucet (or sarah mclachlan's band) for tipping me off to her and kudos to art liestman for getting me a copy of the disc. a proper review will follow in a subsequent post but suffice to say that she's great! :) +woj ======================================================================== From: Mklprc@aol.com Date: Wed, 27 Jul 94 02:10:42 EDT Subject: LoveHounds 94 Well, I just got two videotapes as part of the Lovehounds TapeTree project, which made me spend all yesterday reliving my past with Kate Bush. I had begun to forget just how much I loved her music, her dancing, and her general persona. I also realized what a good job I had done convincing myself that her last two albums weren't a trememdous disappointment. Most poignant was a segment of an interview when she was on her first tour and the interviewer asked her about the Kate of 31, ten years ahead. She didn't know; she thought just more music, more change. She had only produced two albums at that point, working on the third, at the peak of her art. I wonder what happened. She had so much promise, and did such a good job fulfilling it up to 1985, even though she never toured again (after saying "We will tour again, I know it" in 1980). We get distracted by the new talent to follow. Sarah is so good, Tori, Loreena, now Milla and especially Happy, but I can't forget who started it all, for me, and that was Kate. She should really be credited with starting this genre, if we dare call it that, of brilliant creative women producing such wonderful music with so much to say. Hearing her perform "Another Day" in the video with Peter Gabriel reminded me that the song never failed to make me cry. It has been years since I listened to it. [Digression: The only other artist who did that to was Jon Mark on his album "Songs For A Friend," an album so wonderful I think I will copy it and send it to the Ecto Taping Project. People need to hear this album; one of the most intense emotional experiences I have on record. Jon was originally part of Mark-Almond Band in the early '70s; he did this solo after that. He dropped out and now records Newage instrumental music and never duplicated the sound of "Friend."] I just wish someone with an inside track could write a long article or a book and explain just what happened. How come Kate is not as popular, successful and productive as Barbra Streisand is (in her own format). I am sure there are people who strongly declare that The Red Shoes is the best album of 1994; I just cannot do so myself. When I play Kate any more, it is one of the first five albums. I don't dare think about posting these thoughts on rec.music.gaffa, but here maybe somebody understands my feelings on this. Hi! Chad, what time are these songs being aired? Thanks to the positively treacly appeals system we have in this country, there is still a "safe harbor" period, the exact hours of which change every week or so, but are usually somewhere between 9 PM and 6 AM. During those hours you can legally play anything you want, so long as you preface it with a "cover your virgin ears" disclaimer. If this station has somehow managed to work out a 24-hour safe harbor period with the FCC, they should be bronzed and cloned, with the pods dropped on every town in America. Wow.
