We should have a Philly gathering of sorts ere long. I'm sure we'll be doing our New Years Day Open House again, but perhaps we needn't wait that long. I was in Sears this evening (yes, I do shop there, do you have a problem with that? :), and while walking through the electronics department I saw a wall of about 16 TVs all tuned to the same thing. The sound was down on all of them, but I just *knew* at first glance that it had to be an October Project video. I don't know how I knew this, since the only pictures I've seen have been from the liner notes of the disc, and they're not too detailed, but I just knew. A stood there watching the video, fending off rabid sales clerks ("no, I do NOT need help buying a TV, thanks very much"), and sure enough, it was October Project, "Return To Me". Not a very interesting video, but it was weird to see it in Sears of all places, and with no sound to boot! It wasn't on eMpTV either. It looked like an in-store video thing. Very strange. Then I got home and the latest BMG Classical Club newsletter was waiting for me. The last pages are always selections from the other clubs, and on the last page under the "Top Women Of Pop" section we have Tori Amos, _Under The Pink_ and Sarah McLachlan, _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_. Incidentally, if any of you can tune in MuchMusic (I understand it's available in Boston now?), I hear on fte that the first video of today's edition of MuchWest is Sarah's new video for "Good Enough". "Jale" is an acronym for the four members of the band: Jennifer Pierce, Alyson MacLeod, Laura Stein, and Eve Hadling. I don't have the slightest idea who plays which instrument or sings. ;-) The band is from Halifax (what is it with that town?). _Dreamcake_ is, well, a bit crunchier than standard Ecto fare. The vocals are somewhat ethereal, somewhat little-girlish (though *nothing* like Cranes or even the Sundays...). I'm still reminded of Belly wrt vocals. Also, lots of loud effects-laden guitar and banging drums. This definitely isn't for everyone, but I'd guess that it might appeal to fans of Belly, perhaps Lush, Arson Garden, Tribe, and other such harsh-but-sorta-purty stuff. Hi everyone! Don't know if you remember my reporting on Paula Cole's show back in May. Well she has just released her 1st album entitled "Harbinger" on Tuesday. I went to a few stores Monday evening to be sure they had a copy and to see if I could purchase it early ("No Way! Its against the law."). So I had them hold the only copy they had ("She's a new artist so we only ordered one copy"). Well I picked it up Tuesday afternoon and have been listening to it ever since. She is definitely ecto-fodder (IMO). The album was produced, mixed and engineered by Kevin Killen who has worked w/ KaTe Bush, Peter Gabriel and Elvis Costello among others. Paula has a gorgeous and very powerful voice, not the range of Happy or KaTe somewhat different since she studied as a jazz vocalist for some years. Her songs are very personal and full of emotion about relationships, "I am so ordinary", her mom "Happy Home", a trek w/her man across the country "Oh John", about her home town and the tourists that invade it every year, "Bethlehem", a song about light and dark "Chiaroscuro". She is currently part of the WOMAD tour singing the duets and backup for Peter. Well if you see the CD at a listening station check it out and form your own opinion. I love it!!!!! Apparently T-shirt manufacturers distribute their products to local markets, and so it was impossible to find one in Athens. The only thing remotely related that I found was the epitomy of kitsch. A marble statue of the Colossus standing on the port of Rhodes with a ship passing through his legs. I decided that Happy would hate it, and did not get it. I missed out on getting Nine Inch Nails tickets for their first show in Atlanta, so I was really happy to hear a second show had been added. Tickets went on sale Monday, without me knowing until Tuesday. So, I called up TM on Tuesday evening to get tickets. The clueless employee told me tickets were sold out for both shows. I found this hard to believe, so I questioned him extensively. But he insisted tickets were all gone, and I finally accepted this. Then, today I see in a local paper that tickets are still available for the 2nd show. I call up TM, and the operator tells me tickets are indeed available. Of course, by now, the only ones left are nose-bleed seats I would not buy for $25. So, I decide to complain. After three calls to the TM administrative offices without anyone answering, I was finally rudely switched to a manager who basically told me there was nothing she could do. She didn't really care that her employees were screwing up orders. Argh! The Justice Department can't act quickly enough to put an end to TM. In happier news, the new Sire compilation, _Just Say Roe_, is out. It has new songs by Kristin Hersh and Danielle Dax on it, as well as songs by Belly, David Byrne, Madonna, Judybats, etc., etc. The Danielle Dax song, "Defiled," sounds a lot like Ministry, oddly enough. In fact, one part sounds like she may have even sampled Ministry's "N.W.O." Very bizarre... One more thing, and I'll try my hardest to get back to studying for the Bar. The new _Rolling Stone_ has a couple of Ectophilic things in it. There's a picture of Kristin Hersh and Milla, with a quote by Milla about being nervous performing in front of Shannen Doherty, who was apparently being quite rude and laughing at Milla. Also, there are glowing reviews of Iris DeMent and Rebecca Pidgeon (who I did not know was married to David Mamet). Plus, there is an article on the evils of Ticketmaster. :-) Stuart, unsuccessfully trying to study ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 21 Jul 94 13:12:31 PDT From: stevev@greylady.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: Yet Another Post From Deepspace... Should be fun! Actually, lest I sound again like someone with too much taste for his own good (as I may have when I said how much I hated "Mondo 2000"), I thought the "Great Comet Crash" show was abysmal. I didn't watch it live, since we were out trying to see if we could see a real comet crash live (Jupiter was nicely visible here on the west coast at the time of the fragment R impact, although we didn't end up seeing any result of it), and when I got home to watch it on tape, I found it much more rewarding to tune it out while I looked at the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 Home Page from JPL on the World Wide Web (http://newproducts.jpl.nasa.gov/sl9/sl9.html, for you Web junkies). The TV show didn't have enough pictures, presented the little useful information it did show in amateurish ways, and had too many pointless interludes that were only marginally related to the event at hand. Of course, I've been spoiled by my access to the Internet, because the aforementioned Web page has been the most wonderful news resource I could imagine -- it reported the first impact no more than two hours after it happened (when it finally occured to me to look), and has continued to obtain images and viewing reports from all over the world with several updates each day. You can get pictures of every single visible impact from several different observers, including high-quality Hubble photographs. It makes all of the newspaper and television reports look feeble by comparison. ======================================================================== From: jzitt@ssnet.com (Joseph Zitt) Subject: Re: Yet Another Post From Deepspace... How come so few people seem to enjoy this work? (Or at least so few in the press.) - Neal A Misguided Outing for a Gifted Childs - Chris Willman, LA Times Toni Childs is an immensely gifted singer, but she may not be her own best friend when it comes to making artistic choices. Six years after her appealing debut, "Union," written primarily on her own, she's come up with an ambitious and sorely misguided concept album that any reasonable collaborator would have talked her out of. "The Woman's Boat," played almost in its entirety and in order, provided the gist of Childs' wildly uneven show Tuesdday at House of Blues. The song cycle emblematically charts a human life from beginning to end, and what passed for life between "Womb" and "Death" often consisted of light, not overly tuneful worldbeat/rock rhythms. They were an undercurrent for successions of overwrought and underwritten statements about existence and earnest expressions of universal Angst whose baldly primal nature didn't quite substitute for songwriting. The full house nonetheless lapped up the latest offerings form the sultry beauty, whose unique chops - at her best, she's a bona fide white soul singer, somewhere between Phoebe Snow and Johnette Napolitano - can sometimes sell even questionable material. Childs wasn't beyond overreaching vocally, too, turning her hit "Don't Walk Away" (one of five older numbers) into a nodule-scratching overkill, but the singer also proved capable of investing quieter numbers with a subtlety that made them as touching as intended. ======================================================================== From: Robert Lovejoy Date: Thu, 21 Jul 1994 22:28:32 -0400 Subject: A Phone call from the Management! Hello surface-dwellers, This afternoon I was honored by a telephonic communication from the Home Office, a.k.a Susanne White. A few quick words about Joyous Lake et al: Firstly, it's highly unlikely any of the new albums will be available there. Though Happy is indeed on schedule with the final mastering, BTC is expected to hit the stores Aug. 30. AG is accepting preorders for the album, by the way. To those of you who are going to attempt Joyous Lake: Woodstock will probably close its roads late Thursday. You may not be able to get in or out, but then again who knows about backroads? There is no guarantee that the venue will or will not be filled to capacity. The logistics are uncertain at best. Happy is still not Officially on Friday's program, either (but Susanne is generally positive about this). Anyway, I was >certainly thrilled and delighted to hear "Good Enough," but I doubt it has >the marketing value of a song like "Possession." Well, it is the next single, in both Canada and the US. I think the rationale behind the release of it in America is that it can be sent to "AOR" radio as well as "alternative" radio. Hell, if the Cranberries could do it with "Linger", why can't Sarah with "Good Enough"? It's a nice mellow song... I just worry about The Word. Even with the offending syllable dropped out, I'm not too sure how programmers for the "adult contemporary" (gag) market will approach it... we'll have to see. Sarah did do "Circle" live on the first leg of the tour -- at least she did it in Toronto the night the CBC taped the show for their Hot Ticket program. And an interesting rendition it was, too... Personally, I think they should release the live version of "Hold On" as a single down here once the live album comes out. It rocks, it's catchier than hell, and who can resist Sarah wanking away at that guitar? ;> >A goofy question: does anybody else thing that Sarah looks a little like > Tori Spelling? Valerie, you were there too, rolling up Tori posters and bitching the whole way about getting newspaper ink all over your hands. :} Anyway, just when we got to the gate of where the show was going to be (all of the Sarah shows in my dreams take place outside, in the same park -- and yes, there have been several, and no, I am *not* obsessed :), there was a commotion outside my window and I woke up, lost the dream, and went back to sleep. Later when we both got up woj told me about this dream he had about us going to a Sarah show with a bunch of other people.
