The same deadline will apply to you all as was posted to the net. Mitch ============================================================================== Subject: Film/TV Trivia Quiz: The Small Screen Rips Off the Big One Recently, I've noticed quite a number of television series episodes which borrow plot elements, or even whole plots, from movies. A number of such instances, taken from actual TV shows, are described below; for each, pick the movie in which the bit of business in question originally appeared. 1. From _Baywatch_: Mitch pulls a beautiful woman out of the water. They fall in love. The only problem is that she's a princess on the run from her usual life. Eventually they realize their relationship couldn't work out, and she goes back to doing the royalty thing. a. _The Prince and The Showgirl_ b. _Roman Holiday_ c. _Rome Adventure_ d. _Imitation of Life_ e. _An Affair to Remember_ 2. From _Matlock_: Ben is summoned for jury duty, and ends up doing a murder trial. At first he's the only juror to vote for acquittal. He weathers a lot of conflict with the others, and finally convinces them all to vote with him. a. _Class Action_ b. _The Verdict_ e. _Trial_ d. _To Kill A Mockingbird_ e. _12 Angry Men_ 3. From _The Critic_: After a bad day, Jay and his son visit a shopping mall to cheer themselves up. They are shown leaving a clothing store wearing identical double-breasted suits with shirts buttoned at the collar, and no ties. a. _Rain Man_ b. _GoodFellas_ c. _The Beauty Jungle_ d. _Smile_ e. _The Wheeler Dealers_ 4. From _Beverly Hills 90210_: The episode opens with voices from a distant planet looking down at the situa- tion on Earth, and wondering out loud what to do WRT the current situations of Brenda, Dylan, and the rest of the gang. a. _Pocketful of Miracles_ b. _Wings of Desire c. _It's a Wonderful Life_ d. _Angels in the Outfield_ e. _Angel Baby_ 5. From _Sweating Bullets_: Nick and the villains-of-the-week are shooting it out near a flight of steps leading up from the beach. All that action somehow dislodges a baby carriage that was parked on the steps; and it rolls down them lurchingly, to the great anxiety of the mother. a. _The Birth of a Nation_ b. _Potemkin_ c. _Faraway, So Close_ d. _The Fugitive_ e. _The 39 Steps_ 6. From _Baywatch_: A newly married man encounters C.J. on the beach, and becomes infatuated with her. When his wife gets a sunburn and stays in their hotel room for the day, he takes the opportunity to pursue C.J. a. _Marriage Italian Style_ b. _Divorce Italian Style_ c. _Friday the 13th_ d. _The Heartbreak Kid_ e. _10_ 7. From _Sweating Bullets_: A woman hires Nick because she thinks her husband is trying to kill her. Nick finds no evidence of this. The woman wonders whether she's losing her mind, and Nick thinks maybe she is. Turns out her husband really is trying to kill her, and has been doing things to make it look like she's going crazy, when she really isn't. a. _Gaslight_ b. _Intermezzo_ c. _Dial M for Murder_ d. _Family Plot_ e. _The Big Sleep_ Email your answers to me by Thursday, July 21. Date: Tue, 19 Jul 1994 15:56:10 -0700 (PDT) I vaguely recall there being some talk a while ago about setting up a possible Ecto home page for users of the World Wide Web. I think Jessica started one but has been too busy to do much with it (please correct me if I'm wrong, Jessica), so I decided to set something up myself. I've been needing learn HTML anyway, and an Ecto home page seemed like a nifty idea. For those who aren't sure what the World Wide Web is, it's a project begun in Switzerland a couple of years ago to set up a standard way of linking information in files. These linked files are called hypertext files, and can contain text, graphics, sound, video, etc. There are thousands of servers all around the world to which you can connect using a graphical client like Mosaic for the Mac or Windows, or a text-only client like lynx. I think it'd be cool to have an Ecto server, or home page. Anyway, I've assembled a sort of prototypical Ecto home page (proto-Ecto?) if anyone's interested. At this point it contains Vickie's Ecto and alt.music.ecto FAQs, a list of tracks for Ecto and links to the lyrics for each song. Kind of neat - clicking on the title of a song brings up the lyrics for it. I also broke up the Ecto FAQ into sections which can be read individually. Perhaps later more pictures and stuff could be added. Sound samples maybe? However I'm finding it quite time-consuming to go through to the ftp site and convert all the song lyrics to HTML format and so if you'd like to volunteer, please drop me a line! It's actually very easy to do and requires no programming knowledge. Also, does anyone know the legality of posting lyrics and samples and whatnot? Strictly speaking, of course, they are a flagrant and illegal violation of copyright. But the lyrics have obviously been on the FTP site for some time. Does Happy have any particular opinions on this question? Anyone know? So, if you'd like to check out the home page fire up your client (NCSA Mosaic for Mac, X-windows or Windows, MacWeb or lynx are popular clients) and check out this URL: http://mathserv.math.sfu.ca/ecto/homepage.html Under Mosaic pull down "Open URL..." from the "File" menu and type in that typically user-unfriendly URL. If you're using a UNIX text-only system, type "lynx" and then type "G". Then type in the URL. Please note that this home page will *not* be at this site for very long. So if you try this site in a few days and there's nothing there it's likely to have moved. I'll post an update when I have a more permanent site for it. Have fun and please mail me if you have any suggestions or if you'd like to do some work on it! - Neil K. -- 49N 16' 123W 7' / Vancouver, BC, Canada / neil_k_guy@sfu.ca ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 19 Jul 1994 19:58:24 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael K Curry Subject: Happy caravan :) Jeff (and everyone else), I'd certainly like in on any caravan plans for Happy's show in Woodstock! I heard an extremely cool song by them on Sunday night. The song, or maybe the album, is called "Dreamcake." Basically, it sounded like a cross between Lush and Belly, only completely different. Well, okay, not completely. Without the vocals, I would have been certain it was Lush. The vocalist didn't sound like Tanya Donnelley, but _reminded_ me of her. So now I want more info! Date: Tue, 19 Jul 1994 20:48:31 -0700 (PDT) By the way, if you don't have Mosaic or lynx or some other WWW client program on your computer, there's a way to get onto the World Wide Web without telnet access. Telnet to www.njit.edu and log in as www. This lets you try out a text-only WWW navigator. To get to the Ecto home page type "G" and press return. Then type in the URL: http://mathserv.math.sfu.ca/ecto/homepage.html And that'll get you there. Unfortunately, the NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology) browser is kind of weird and hard to use... Also, some people have mentioned in passing it'd be fun to put a sort of rogues' gallery of Ectophiles onto the home page for those people with graphical clients. How do folks feel about this? Personally I'm not going to put my picture onto the site for the entire world to see, but does anyone else have opionions on this? - Neil K. -- 49N 16' 123W 7' / Vancouver, BC, Canada / neil_k_guy@sfu.ca ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 19 Jul 1994 23:22:00 -0400 (EDT) From: THE OLIVE-LOAF VIGILANTE Subject: Re: New Haven and ecto hostel friends.. Somebody remind me not to arrange return flights that get me home at 1 AM when I have to be at work at 8:30 the next morning. %) Anyway, I heard on the radio this evening that tickets go on sale tomorrow for a rare small-venue (as in Beacon Theater, NYC) appearance by.... PETER GABRIEL! (And Lou Reed, but who cares? ;) The only catch is this minor detail: The show starts at 8 PM on Thursday, August 11. :P :P :P Barring massive disaster I'll hopefully be caravaning it to Woodstock for a Happy-ning then, so so much for that. But if any of you out there are planning to be heathen scum and blow off Happy for PG, grease up your speed-dial and start calling Ticketslime at 9 AM tomorrow. My only regret (other than not spending time actually with Sarah ;-) was not meeting any of the net folk, besides the brief meeting with brni (good seeing you again!). I was particularly worried about rain, but we only had a drop or two on Sunday, while Saturday was gorgeous! The stage is in a area with a great view of the river as well, so that was cool. I was able to do some of the tourist thing Sunday morning, touched the Bell, etc. (I know, it doesn;t sound exciting, but...) I got a late start, but for an omen, when I pulled off the highway, a Happy song was on WXPN. I missed the prearranged meet as well as most of the first act, and really only got seated in time for Iris Dement. I was stunned when she broke a string, because she claimed it had never happened to her. A stage guy helped out, and told her to tell a story, and she couldn't! Who has ever heard of a folk singer who doesn't talk????? Sonia Dada was good...not my style, but good enough that it didn't matter. The crowd was very much into them. Sarah was incredible. After a brief moment of feedback, which took her aback, the sound was good, and she seemed to be having a very good time. I was absolutely captivated. She did play a relatively short set, and I was surprised she played so little from the new album. The October Project stole the show with an amazing performance which I will remember forever. As has been mentioned, the voices blended so well, with such haunting music that I cannot imagine being untouched. On the way in Sunday, WXPN was playing October Project as I pulled in...another great omen! Sunday, which everyone else seems to have skipped, started with Iota, a hard alternative girl rock band, who I now kick myself for not seeing at the Tin Angel the night before when I was wandering around bored. Other than Black 47 at the Fall Fest at SUNY last fall, I have never seen a really good band open one of these things, til now. John Gorka followed, a folk singer who had great stage patter with good folk music. A real performer. Sam Phillips was next...with an interesting band. Terry from X was on lead guitar, a drummer who was ok but looked like he was on the wrong stage, the Bass player (Jerry Sp something), who has played with "Both Elvis' Costello and Presley, the Doors' and quite a few others, and was extremely good. The rythym guitar is some guy name T-Bone, and thus quite an impressive 'band off the cuff'. She had remarkably little stage presence, but played quite well, and was very well received. The Subdudes came on, with a N'Orlans style that was very catching. Some guy got tossed out for standing up up front, got the crowd to stand (finally), and was brought back in by a stage crew member with a stage pass! Shawn Colvin finished off in style, and she brought a very charming presence along with her enchanting music (I am still trying to decide if I want to brave the crowds for the Newport Folk festival). *sigh* just too short. The drive back was difficult, but I did make it safely, crawling in to bed around 3:30 AM. Thanks again to those that swayed me to popping on down! Dennis Parslow You know what I like about hockey? It does seem for some reason that everyone who went on Saturday blew off going on Sunday. I guess maybe Sunday's lineup just didn't appeal as much to the ecto audience. Personally, I wanted to see the artists on both days, but Sunday's headline artists were more of a folk and/or southern type sound which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea. Or maybe those who went on Saturday just couldn't take the crowds anymore. Fortunately I got there 3 hours before the show started so was able to get a great spot staked out. Iota was the only one of Sunday's lineup that I own a CD of so was rather disappointed to see them/her perform such a short set. I've seen John Gorka a few times(he's from New Jersey) and he always seems to put on a good show.
