Just wanted to report that the show on WPKN right now is ecto heaven (Iris DeMent, Kristen Hersh, Sheila Chandra, etc.), so I called to request some Happy. The dude playing all this wonderful stuff had never heard of her, so I made him find the station's copy of _Equipoise_ (the copy of _Warpaint_ I arranged to have them sent over a year ago seems to have walked away, since it's no longer on their library list :P) and play "I Say". He is now in the process of raving about Happy to all of Southern Connecticut. Excuse me, but I have to call him back and tell him that yes, that *was* just one person singing. :) Meredith meth@delphi.com ======================================================================== From: "Ralph A. But I don't believe I've seen the answer anywhere... Who invented the word ectophile? Does anyone remember? Or did it sort of spring out of the ectoplasm years ago? Or was it a sort of parallel evolution? The reason I wonder is because I notice Happy thanks the "ectophiles" on her album "Ecto." Now this I find deeply mystifying because I was always under the belief that the name of the list comes from the album. And thus fans of Happy get their name from that. Buuuut... how can it be that she thanks ectophiles on the very album whence the name "ecto" came?! Can Happy see into the future? (talking about non-linear timelines) Is my copy of the CD a re-release? Was there a song named "Ecto" prior to the release of the album? "Ecto", and all the albums prior to "Warpaint" (if I remember rightly) were originally released only on tape, and it was due to this list and the members of the time that the earlier albums were ever released on disc, hence Happy's note of thanks! Cool, my dad built two of those. They had black and white keys just like a piano. F.y.i. "nyckel" = key in swedish and "harpa" = harp. As far as I can recall they had four pairs of strings of which one was played with the keys and one for was for resonance. There were four rows of keys, one for each pair of strings. Each key had a little wodden pin that would touch the nearer string when the key was pressed. The upper keys had holes in them with the pins of the lower keys sticking up through them. Buuuut... how >can it be that she thanks ectophiles on the very album whence the name >"ecto" came?! Philip has already explained that the CD is a re-release of the original tape. I'm posting largely because Philip expressed concern that he might have the story wrong; he doesn't. When ecto got going back in June 1991, it was possible to buy 5 Happy albums on tape and one album on CD -- Warpaint. The 1st4 tapes were pretty wild; the cover art were actually photographic prints that were cut to fit and then glued to a generic tape insert. The song titles were printed (typewritten?), xeroxed, and glued to the inside of the cover. Everything was put together by hand. Warpaint was the first professionally produced cassette. At one time, it was thought that the 1st4 would *never* be released on CD. It was pretty amazing news when we found out that it would happen. The CDs didn't actualy make it out until May of '92, 11 months after ecto started. We were rather pleased when Happy mentioned us in the liner notes. Your question would have been answered by look at Volumes I or II: "Thanks to: [...] and to all of the Ectophiles, for inspiring the re-release of my back catalog." Vickie (the original EctoMa) received an earlier thanks, getting mentioned in the liner notes of Warpaint.
