As I said, a good part of the crowd was rather obnoxious. About halfway through the show Milla looked over at Chris and he said "Let's just do it and see if they catch on." [or words to that effect] Then he started playing the piano/keyboard, leading up to a version of Gentleman Who Fell which was just him on the piano and Milla singing. I received a postcard from a friend in St John's, Newfoundland who is trying to find more of a crow-counting rhyme: One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy. Five for silver, six for gold, seven for a story that's never been told. does anyone know any more of this? Does it have anything to do with the group Counting Crows that was mentioned on ecto during June? What are Counting Crows like, anyway? There was more discussion of their opening act (Paula Cole) than of them! speaking of singers whose last name is Cole, the Holly Cole Trio played a couple of nights at the Montreal International Jazz Festival two weeks ago and they were very impressive. The trio is composed of a pianist (who plays both on the keys and under the cover!), an amazing double bassist (he does percussion as required, with his bass), and Holly Cole herself, who has a smooth, controlled, expressive voice. justin ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 12 Jul 1994 11:12:52 -0600 (MDT) From: "all together now, in no man's land" Subject: Re: counting crows? Greetings! I first got into Counting Crows this January before their first single off of the album "August and Everything After" really started getting a lot of heavy airplay. The `crow counting rhyme' you referred to in your letter is from the song "A Murder Of One" (which unfortunately, I don't have the lyrics for right now, as I'm in a lab, but will send later). I'm not very sure where they got it from . . . but I know it's not original. There was a _huge_ article in Rolling Stone a few weeks ago that told everything you would ever want to know about them (including the identity of Mr. Jones, who is the subject and title of their first single). I'm not really good at describing the sound of bands . . . hrmm. I'm trying to think of who to compare them to, and am drawing a blank. They're not really ecto fodder, but I _love_ their sound . . . lots of guitar, sort of folk rock. The lyrics are _truly_ the best part of the album . . . lots of stories that I personally could really identify with. Like I said, IO 'm not at home right now, but when I've gotten more info, I'll send it to you. :) peace, love, and black-winged birds, Janet ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 10 Jul 1994 11:24:00 +0200 From: uli@zoodle.robin.de (Ulrich Grepel) Subject: Re: High-pitched sounds Hi! This physiological > > difference has been proven in studies, but I don't think they've figured out > > why yet. > > Well I'm one male who most certainly can hear said noises... I can hear it too. The line frequency of TVs is ca. 15 kHz, and what some of us can hear is the line transformer that whistles with exactly that frequency. Now 15 kHz is beyond most older people's hearing capability, but I can still hear it. Modern computer monitors (anything from VGA upwards) uses higher line frequencies, up to almost 100 kHz (real high-end monitors) which humans simply cannot hear anymore. There are also the double-scan TV sets with refresh rates of 100/120 Hz. These do have a line frequency of over 30 kHz which you probably can not hear. So everyone who is too much disturbed by the whistling of his TV set should check out such a beast. BTW: I observed that some TV sets not displaying a picture but turned on (e.g. on the vcr input with the vcr turned off) produce an even more enervating high-pitched sound. Other sources of whistling are switching power supplies. These usually hack the current into a kind of alternate current of a high frequency (which is more easily transformed into low voltage DC). This frequency often can be heard too. Yet another source of whistling in a computer can be a combination of some fast chips and a not-too-high-quality power supply. My new computer at the office has lots of RAM and a small power supply. Each time when the upper memory is accessed (during boot time's memory check for example) the power supply gets problems with providing real DC without disturbances, and these disturbances are reproduced by the speaker in the PC :-(. Guess I have to install some capacity parallel to the speaker as a low pass filter... Okay, Uli, let's make this one a bit more confusing. My ancient monochrome monitor refreshes, I belive, at 70hz. I can't hear it under ordinary usage, ie the hard drive on, the stereo blasting ("Crystal Orbs," even as I type! ;-), etc. But if I've only got the monitor and 'puter on, without any noisy perhipherals, I can hear text scrolling up the screen.
