I didn't tape it, nor take notes, but here are a few highlights as I remember them. She noted that she's working to start a toll-free rape crisis line, particular- ly for young people, having been inspired by the experiences she expounds on in "Me and a Gun." She said that musical bits from Methodist hymns remembered from childhood have found their way into her current musical style. She discussed her mixed Scottish-Cherokee ethnic background, being way ahead of her early music teachers as a kid, and her early affinity for Joni Mitchell. Arguably the most interesting bits were when she discussed her view of perform- ing as reality, and everything else as waitinfg for the next gig; and her personal relationship with her piano. This interview appeared in the second half-hour of the _ATC_ wheel. It will repeat on many NPR stations, today after 7 PM eastern or 6 PM central time. Her debut album draws from varied song traditions, from art-pop to Webern. No brainless hooks puncture Bezar's songs; instead, she runs intricate themes through variations designed for something more serious than casual listening. "La Place Dauphine" exemplifies her approach: Cabaret references, enhanced by the breath-like rubato of Bezar's self-accompaniment on piano, support an extended melody that suggests Kurt Weill but occasionally flirts with dodecaphony. Electronic touches underscore myriad details, illuminating but never diverting attention from the pianistic heart of the song. On electronic pieces, several of which were recorded at Stanford University's CCRMA music lab, or works such as the eleven-minute "Just Like Orestes," Bezar blends diverse electro-acoustical elements to orchestrate complex passagework. This is difficult, dense stuff: From polytonal piano and voice episodes through murky synthesized textures riddled with industrial noises, Bezar brooks no compromise in her art. There are artists of talent, and artists of integrity: Those, like Bezar, who possess both qualities are a rare and valuable commodity. - Robert L. Hello Everyone, I have to tell you at the outset that this is the most difficult *newsletter* I have ever had to write. I=D5m not sure how to tactfully or tenderly broach the subject so I shall be bald about it. Jim Stallman (percussion) and Char Malloy (violin) have both decided to leave the band. ----------------------------------------- Yes - you read that correctly. Jim and Char have decided that they need to move out of the *starving artist* phase of their lives. Neither any long feel the same level of committment to the band as Yvonne & Preston do or as they themselves used to. Preston & Yvonne as the co-founders of Big Hat and as the primary songwriters have decided to continue on as Big Hat. They are actively seeking a new string player & a new percussionist. I am reminded of a friend of mine who said that when he and his girlfriend broke up that their subsequent friendship was akin to a memorial to their lost love. I feel that in this case the recorded output of Big Hat and all our collective memories of the first time we were introduce to the band=D5s unique sound will serve in memorial to this phase of Big Hat. BUT as with the loss of a relationship live goes on and new liaisons are formed. A new commitment does and, in this certainly, will not replace the preciousness of the old, but it will fill the void and can usher in a new era. Sooo Big Hat is seeking a string player (violin, viola, or cello) & a percussionist who are: (1) willing and capable of learning their extensive repertoire, (2) able to make a commitment to extensive touring & recording, (3) prepared to become fully functioning members of a band with a reputation for musical integrity & individuality. GULP! ----------------------------------------- I believe that it is POSSIBLE and PROBABLE that these goals will be achieved, I am simply sorry that these steps had to be taken. I will miss the grace, wit, style, and exquisite musicianship of Jim & Char. ----------------------------------------- THE GOOD NEWS: There should be a few more chances to hear the band with its current lineup. Preston is trying to set up a local (Chicago) gig to take place in the next month (I believe) and the new CD, tentatively called *Taqueria El Muerte* has been recorded and mixed. --------------------------------------- (No*grins* today) Sanz ******************************WEE!!!!!!!***********************************= *** bighat@golden.ripco.com Other fave bands:Catherine*She*Judgement of (Sanz) aka Mad Millinery. And who said being a support band doesn't work! Last week I saw Maryen Cairns supporting Fish at the Mean Fiddler in London.I only caught a couple of songs, but was intrigued enough to go along to see her at the Orange in Kensington last night. I don't expect many of you will have heard of her. Maryen Cairns is an Australian singer/songwriter (with some Scottish influences I believe). She writes intelligent, powerful songs and is an extremely charismatic performer. However, her greatest weapon is her voice - a swooping, soaring instrument which is used to full effect live. First impressions are that she is very Kate Bush-like, using the high registers of her voice a lot. However, seeing her with her full band last night made me think more of Happy Rhodes, with the keyboards taking a big part. She definitley fits into the ecto mold. Last night's gig suffered from poor attendance, but was still a worthwhile experience. Songs like 'Little Girl' and 'This Dream' came across well, even allowing for a poor vocal mix. She has one album out, and another due soon. I was going to pick up a copy of her first album afterthe show, but had to dash for my train. I don't know how widely available her material is, or what label its on, but it's worth checking out if you can find it. OK, not a wonderful review I grant you, but I'm not a Pretentious Rock Journalist. Maryen Cairns is worth keeping an eye open for. This is a problem Why don't they just lower everything else? I for one don't need excessive volume or feedback assaulting my ears anymore. Sure, feeling my body vibrating is great if I'm having a massage, but for sound it means my ears are in danger. Guess I'll have to keep using earplugs since my ears are particularly sensitive now (didn't use to use them). I would think that serious musicians, of all people, would be concerned about it. In a sense, it has no time travel. It deals with a character that is randomly pops into his own consciousness throughout various points in his life. Yes, the life/time line is linear, but he has no control over the "excursions" and retains full awareness of each "trip". Therefore, he knows of his adult life while still in early childhood, etc. The movie got a bit tedious at times, but the story concept was interesting. I'm back from a Nantasket weekend in Boston, and I have two Tori things to say that have probably already been said but too bad cos I haven't read'em yet. 1) Tori had a feature on All Things Considered last night (Tue.). And for those of you who missed it, I will tell you this is the *best* Tori interview I have ever heard. She was 'viewed at her piano and the questions were great and the answers were even better and she played and sang stuff. It seemed really long, at leaat 10 minutes, which is more than they usually alot for musical guests. (It was a taped interview.) If anyone has a transcript, I would like to see it! 2) I stole this from the late-show list: And an odd tale of self-censorship featuring that singer the kids rilly dig, Tori Amos. During her performance of the song "Precious Things," Amos, uh, pulled out while singing the line, "So you can make me cum/That doesn't make you Jesus," rendering the C-word nearly inaudible. No, we aren't making this up: sharp-eared viewer Alan McKendree noted that after the song, Paul Shaffer led the band into the commercial break with a rendition of "Come Together." I didn't realize Paul played that song, though I have it on tape. I *love* when Paul makes up associations thru music like that... he does it for just about every guest that comes on. Question is, did he know she would censor herself, and would he have played that song either way? We'll never know. Spirit of the West tonight at the Elbo Room in Chicago -- $5. Wed. 7/6/94. I think it is the most powerful album I have heard this year. I don't have much to add to Jeff's review, although I thought it was kind of funny that the recent Rolling Stone gave it two stars, called it overreaching (neither the singing nor the writing were up to the lofty goals), and actually quoted some of the same lyrics as Jeff, but didn't like them. Then again, they do have Julia Roberts on the cover. What I think she is saying is that we should do something >about the sorry mess our world is in, without relying on aliens to >come along and fix everything for us... this doesn't mean that >communication with alien species is a bad thing; only that if it >happens it would be nice if we had something to show for ourselves... You might be reading too much into this song. I think the song is primarily about the contrast between how we treat other species and races ("we are the number one offender of specieism", "come on down and see our zoos and refugee camps") and how some people treat the aliens (rather friendly). It's actually similar to contrasting the hunger in some countries against us feeding our cats with expensive cat food. This is a form of bad reasoning, I think. Doing one good thing doesn't become a bad thing because we're not doing another (superficially related, but actually independent) good thing. >Well a little peace and harmony and an end to a few of the world's >troubles might be looked upon as 'boring' to some, but I don't really >see it that way... (and if we take "saving" to mean this, then I don't >really imagine that anyone sees it that way) I agree. Do you have any ideas how we're going to do this? (If anyone is interested, I could post some rather large files with ideas. :-) >Philip Albert ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
